Canton of Jura updates list of industrial sites suitable for redevelopment

The canton of Jura is committed to revitalising its industrial wastelands. As part of theSwissRenovproject, it has now updated the cantonal register of industrial wastelands suitable for redevelopment, according to a press release. This first step is intended to provide up-to-date and reliable information to companies and investors who are looking for commercial space or are interested in the redevelopment and modernisation of industrial facilities.

In the first phase of the project in 2019, around 90 industrial brownfield sites were identified, of which around half have been redeveloped to date. Now, 30 more brownfield sites are being added. The updated map, which can be viewed online, currently lists 70 industrial sites. 60 per cent of these are located in the district of Porrentruy, 36 per cent in the district of Delèmont and the rest in the districts of Franches-Montagnes and Moutier. In the current phase, the SwissRenov project in Jura is scheduled for completion by 2028.

The SwissRenov project is being led by Haute École Arc in collaboration with the cantonal spatial planning departmentand is being driven forward byCreapole SAin Delèmont. It is supported by the Swiss Confederation through theInnosuisse flagship programme and byCleantechAlps, the cleantech promoter for French-speaking Switzerland.

According to the press release, this project, which is unique in Switzerland, aims to promote the renovation and refurbishment of industrial buildings in line with the principles of the circular economy.

New investor for window and door manufacturer

Nuavo Holdings AG has made its first investment together with Swiss entrepreneurs and acquired Domofen AG, based in Courgenay. Founded by Claude Beynon in 1999, the company manufactures PVC windows and doors and has been managed by his son Fabrice since 2018. Under his aegis, Domofen has expanded considerably over the past five years and invested in new production facilities and state-of-the-art equipment, according to a Nuavo press release.

Fabrice Beynon wants to further expand the family legacy with this partnership: “Choosing Nuavo as a partner was a natural decision,” he is quoted as saying. “In addition to their financial commitment, their entrepreneurial thinking and practical approach make them the ideal partner for Domofen. They respect our heritage, our team and our vision for the future and I look forward to working with them.” As a co-shareholder and key member of the management team, Fabrice Beynon will continue to be actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the company.

“Domofen is exactly the kind of company we founded Nuavo for,” says co-founder Philipp Ries. “We see Domofen as a solid company with incredible potential and our goal is to work with the team to create new opportunities while preserving the company’s unique identity.”

Nuavo’s founding team of three also includes Raphael Gindrat, founder and former CEO of Bestmile. The start-up’s platform for orchestrating autonomous vehicle fleets was acquired by technology group ZF in 2021. As Gindrat now emphasises in a separate announcement, Domofen will continue its operations “with the same team, the same values and the same excellence”. And he emphasises: “At Nuavo, we do things differently. We are not just investors – we are entrepreneurs investing in entrepreneurs.”

    Innovation network in medical technology

The medtech sector in the canton of Jura is growing steadily. A current map from Basel Area Business & Innovation already lists 67 companies, start-ups and other facilities in 24 municipalities. The sector is particularly well represented in Delémont and Courroux.

The 14 companies in the cantonal capital include young companies such as 3D Precision and Galien Plus as well as traditional firms such as Humard Automation and Willemin-Macodel. In Courroux, the Jura branch of the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area forms the core of the growing sector, which already comprises 17 companies, start-ups and institutions. Not only is a branch of the Centre Suisse d’électronique et de microtéchnique(CSEM) represented here, but also the start-up accelerator DayOne Tech, which supports selected start-ups for twelve months. Four companies are based in Glovelier and Porrentruy, and three in Bassecourt and Courgenay.

The industry is increasingly networking with each other. The Medtech Congress, which will be held for the third time on October 30 by DayOne at the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area in Courroux, will also contribute to this. Visits to companies in the region are on the agenda for the following day.

The DayOne Tech support program is already entering its fourth round. Altiscreen is developing portable devices for the rapid detection of drugs. Amarastesia is working on components that can be used to open body cavities with as few after-effects as possible for patients. OrthoSens is developing intelligent implants for orthopaedics that will provide surgeons with real-time data.

The Canton of Jura is one of the sponsors of Basel Area Business & Innovation together with the two cantons of Basel. The location promoter supports companies and start-ups in the region and is committed to attracting more companies to the area.

  • Successful drilling of Haute-Sorne geothermal project completed

Successful drilling of Haute-Sorne geothermal project completed

A pilot project for deep geothermal energy is underway in Haute-Sorne. The initiators, Geo-Energie Suisse and Geo-Energie Jura, have announced that the first borehole has been drilled. According to a press release, it took less than three months to explore the subsurface at a depth of 4000 meters. The borehole ran completely through the sediments and penetrated deep into the crystalline bedrock.

This provides geological data on the underground in the Swiss Jura arc between Geneva and Basel. “From a scientific point of view, this is a great opportunity to significantly improve our knowledge of the geology of the Jura. Until now, the deep underground has only been described in such detail at a very localized level at a national level.”

Strict environmental safety precautions apply to the project. There has been no damage or water ingress during ongoing construction work, and noise pollution has been kept to a minimum.

In the view of Geo-Energie Suisse and Geo-Energie Jura, this step paves the way for innovative future prospects for a sustainable energy supply. The data will provide geological insights into the use of geothermal energy to generate electricity and heat. The first success was celebrated on August 28, 2024. Employees, operational, technical and scientific partners and political representatives were invited to the event.

The site is suspended while the data is evaluated and the project progress is planned. Tests in the borehole and a geophysical campaign are scheduled for early 2025. The exploration phase is scheduled until the end of 2025.
