    Zimmerberg region consolidates wastewater treatment in new plant

    STRABAG AG is involved in the Zimmerberg wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) project. The Schlieren-based construction company is erecting the shell of the new Scheller pumping station in Horgen on the former Gasi site. According to a statement, the aim of this work is to replace the existing WWTPs in Horgen and Thalwil with a new plant.

    Both existing wastewater treatment plants are “getting on in years”. Instead of operating both pumping stations individually, which would involve high investment costs for comprehensive modernisation, both municipalities have decided to join forces and create a “joint, modern wastewater treatment plant” for the Zimmerberg region. Once the joint treatment plant is operational, the existing Horgen wastewater treatment plant will be dismantled. The resulting unused land on the lake shore will be made available for public use and urban development.

    The participating municipalities of Horgen, Oberrieden, Rüschlikon and Thalwil already joined forces in September 2020 to form the ARA Zimmerberg special-purpose association. ARA Zimmerberg expects that from 2029 onwards, it will be able to treat the wastewater of up to 78,000 residents and industry in the Zimmerberg region.

    Solar folding roof a milestone for Appenzell I.Rh

    At the recent open day of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Appenzell I.Rh., the latest project – an ingenious solar folding roof – attracted around 200 interested visitors. This innovative system demonstrates the combination of energy efficiency and environmental protection by covering 80% of the ARA’s energy requirements and minimising the formation of algae in the clarifiers.

    In his speech, Ruedi Ulmann, the client of the project, emphasised the importance of the project for the regional energy and climate strategy and highlighted the support of the Grand Council. The solar folding roof, whose design both optimises technical operation and reduces the environmental impact, was blessed by the parish priest Lukas Hidber.

    The solar folding roof impresses with its lightweight construction, which allows unrestricted access to the system and protects it from the weather thanks to intelligent control software. The resulting longer service life of the modules and the reduction in algae growth lead to a reduction in operating costs. The innovative use of solar and biogas technologies at the Appenzell I.Rh. wastewater treatment plant is a pioneering example of the effective utilisation of renewable energies at municipal facilities.

    A new wastewater treatment plant is being built in S-chanf. The Upper Engadine ARA is scheduled to start operations in mid-2021. Repower has installed a solar system with an area of 5800 square meters and 3447 solar modules on the roof of the system. The plant has an output of 1.1 megawatts and an expected annual output of 1.45 gigawatt hours. That corresponds to the consumption of 325 households, writes the Graubünden energy supplier in a press release . The system was designed in such a way that it can withstand heavy snowfall. The modules themselves have a total weight of 69 tons.

    The system has now been put into operation. Repower has invested 1.7 million francs.

    The ARA itself is operated with a combined heat and power unit. This means that electricity consumption on site can be optimized with the aim of using as much solar power as possible on site.
