    Communities can strengthen Alpine destinations

Community building is an approach that can be used to minimise seasonal fluctuations in Alpine destinations and combine tourism with living space, Andermat Swiss Alps AG explains in a press release. Together with Bregaglia Engadin Turismo and the Graubünden University of Applied Sciences, it has launched a research project funded by Innotour to explore ways of building resilient communities. The research partners have now presented their initial findings in a recent report.

In the report, communities are understood as networks with a group identity. In mountain regions, they form in different compositions of locals, second home residents, guests, employees and employers. According to the researchers’ findings, three areas are crucial for the development of communities. Firstly, the understanding of identity at the centre of each of these communities. The second and third areas are collective experience and structure.

According to the press release, building and expanding resilient communities is time-consuming and costly. The communities “require coordination, maintenance and moderation, which in turn emphasises the targeted activation of individual community members”.

  • EWN dispenses with alpine solar plants

EWN dispenses with alpine solar plants

The Nidwalden cantonal electricity utility(EWN) has examined a total of six sites in its supply area for their suitability for the construction of alpine solar plants. In a first step, two sites were assessed as suitable in principle.

However, extensive investigations revealed that the steepness of the terrain at both sites posed particular challenges for the construction and financing of the plants, EWN writes in a press release. EWN refers to the pressure of the snow, avalanches, landslides and possible rockfalls. Possible protective measures would have been so expensive that the plants would no longer have been economically viable.

EWN has therefore decided not to pursue the two projects for the time being. Should the general conditions change, they could be reactivated.

Among other things, EWN operates the Dallenwil hydropower plant and a solar plant on the Stans country park. It also holds a stake in Repartner Produktions AG, a joint venture between Repower and other regional energy suppliers for joint participation in renewable energy projects.

Axpo plans another alpine solar plant in Graubünden

Axpo Holding AG is planning to build another alpine solar plant in the municipality of Ilanz in the canton of Graubünden. According to a media release, the project, called Ovra Solara Camplauns, will also become a prime example of how nature, leisure activities and energy production can be combined. Thus, the area will continue to be usable as pasture land after completion. There will continue to be a corridor for the Abahrtspiste from the Crap Masegn mountain station to Ladir. And hiking and biking routes should also be able to be used without restrictions.

On an area of about 200,000 square metres, the plant with a peak output of 15 megawatt peak is to produce about 22 gigawatt hours of sustainable electricity per year. This corresponds to the average electricity consumption of more than 4,700 households.

“The partnership with the municipality of Ilanz/Glion for the Ovra Solara Camplauns’project marks another important step in our solar offensive,” Oliver Hugi, Head Solar Switzerland at Axpo, is quoted as saying. Axpo plans to implement around 4,200 solar projects in the mountains and on the Swiss Plateau by 2030. Other Axpo Alpine solar projects include Alpin Solar Ybrig in the canton of Schwyz and the two Graubünden projects Ovra Solara Magriel at the Disentis ski resort and NalpSolar at the Nalps reservoir.

According to the statement, commune president Marcus Beer sees the realisation of the project as a unique opportunity to generate long-term income for the commune’s coffers and to contribute to sustainable electricity security in Switzerland. The population of Ilanz has been informed about the project at an information event and will vote on the project in the coming months. If the vote is in favour, Axpo will be able to start construction of the plant in spring 2025 and partially commission it at the end of 2025.

Feld school in Azmoos wins architecture prize

The Feld school in Azmoos has won first place in this year's Constructive Alps architecture prize, the Federal Office for Spatial Development ( ARE ) reports in a statement . It represents Switzerland in the competition organized jointly with Liechtenstein. Constructive Alps recognizes sustainable building and renovation in the Alps. With the competition, the two countries want to promote the implementation of the Alpine Convention for the sustainable development of the mountain region.

The Feld schoolhouse was built on the site of the old schoolhouse in Azmoos. It offers space for more than twice as many children as the old school building on the same built-up area. The socially and ecologically sustainable timber construction also impressed with its own photovoltaic system, among other things.

The second prize was awarded jointly to the headquarters of the heating specialist ÖkoFEN France in Saint-Baldoph and the Ghiringhelli residential development in Bellinzona. Third place went to the renovated Falkenhütte in Hinterriss in the Austrian Karwendel Mountains.

Switzerland will hold the presidency of the Alpine Convention in 2021/22. The internationally binding agreement between the eight Alpine states and the European Union has set itself the goal of developing the Alps into a model region for climate protection and adaptation to climate change. Under the aegis of Switzerland, the focus was on climate, sustainable mobility, Alpine towns, sustainable construction and modal shift.

Agricultural Center Salez wins architecture award

Constructive Alps is awarded to projects that are convincing in terms of sustainable building and renovation in the Alps. Switzerland and Liechtenstein have now awarded this prize for the fifth time, according to a media release . A total of almost 330 projects were submitted. A jury selected ten entries, of which the first three received a total of 50,000 francs. The Salez Agricultural Center took first place.

The Agricultural Center Salez is one of the projects that show that architecture can combine aesthetics and climate protection, as stated in the communication from the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE). The building of the center relies on the simplest possible construction and a long lifespan. Canton and architect Andy Senn would have set new standards in terms of climate efficiency. An assembly hall in Vorarlberg and a mountain inn in Glarus made it into second and third place. In addition to seven recognition prizes, an audience award has also been determined for the first time.

The Agricultural Center Salez consists of a conference center, farm, state farm and orchard. It is operated by the Agricultural Center SG (LZSG) together with the practical trial plots in Flawil. This also has advice centers in Kaltbrunn and Sargans.
