Intelligent mobility for public transport in Bogotá

Schindler is the sole supplier of lifts and escalators for Line 1 of the new elevated railway system in Bogotá. The metro line will use fully automated, driverless railway systems to provide modern, reliable local transport in the Colombian capital. The Schindler systems will therefore be customised to meet the special requirements of public transport, the company announced in a press release. The lifts will be equipped with easily accessible control buttons to enable barrier-free access to the stations.

The Schindler Technical Operations Centre (TOC) in Medellín will monitor each lift and escalator remotely around the clock. The Schindler ActionBoard will also provide real-time status reports of all lifts and escalators, helping to optimise uptime and ride quality for passengers.

“We are incredibly proud to be part of this historic project with our lifts and escalators,” said Vikén Martarian, responsible for the Americas and Escalators region, in the press release. “Bogotá will become more accessible for the people who live, work and visit the capital. Thanks to our lifts and escalators, they will be able to move around the metro stations more easily and comfortably.”

From 2028, Line 1 of the Bogotá Metro will be the first metro line in the Colombian capital to transport over 1 million passengers a day. The line comprises 16 stations over a length of 23.9 kilometres.

Escalator company receives top score in global environmental rating

The renowned non-profit environmental organisation Carbon Disclosure Project has awarded the company the top grade of “A” for its commitment to supplier management. This distinction was awarded as part of the Supplier Management Rating Leaderboard for 2023, in which KONE was ranked 55th out of a total of 21,000 audited companies in the Clean200 ranking by Corporate Knights, a Canadian company that specialises in promoting a sustainable economy.

As the only representative of its industry in the Clean200 list, it emphasises its ambitious commitment to sustainability and the environment. Mikko Korte, emphasises the importance of this recognition and highlights the successful cooperation with suppliers, which contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle of the products.

The rating, which is regarded as the highest standard for environmental transparency, is based on voluntarily provided company data on CO2 emissions, climate risks and reduction strategies. The “A” grade awarded reflects the company’s comprehensive environmental leadership and understanding of environmental risks.

In addition to being recognised by the CPD, the company has also demonstrated leadership in implementing its own environmental targets as validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. Through a comprehensive sustainability strategy, it aims to become a carbon neutral company by 2030 and reduce operational emissions by 50% compared to the 2018 baseline.

These ambitious targets include not only direct greenhouse gas emissions, but also indirect emissions related to energy consumption and the procurement of resources. The company also aims to reduce emissions related to its products and their life cycle by 40 % by focussing on sustainable materials and energy sources.

KONE makes new location a laboratory for New Work

KONE, the Finnish specialist for building mobility, has inaugurated a new branch for around 70 employees in Sion, according to a media release. It was officially opened in the presence of the Finnish ambassador to Switzerland, Valtteri Hirvonen. KONE has been present in Western Switzerland since 2001 and employs 140 people there.

With the opening of its newest location, KONE is simultaneously introducing a new working model. Among other things, this includes a new computer-controlled allocation of workstations every day. Anyone who wants to fill a workstation submits a request via an app and is then assigned a place. This is done randomly and differently from the previous day.

The company hopes that this will lead to stronger communication between employees, which should promote cooperation and creativity. In addition, the office building in Sion is reportedly KONE’s first in the world to be fully designed in the new brand identity. A dynamic and flexible space has been created that can be changed according to needs. This concept was developed with a team of local employees in a participatory process, it said.

“We are proud to be able to introduce a form of collaboration at the Sion site that meets the requirements of digitalisation and globalisation and promotes inclusion and innovation in our Western Switzerland team,” Christian Wukovits, Managing Director KONE Switzerland and Austria, is quoted as saying in the statement, “I would like to express my sincere thanks to the project group and everyone else who was involved in this process. They have done an excellent job that will be groundbreaking for our company”.

Schindler has launched a new generation of building transit management called Schindler Port 4D. A smartphone app developed in-house is integrated into this latest version of its existing transit management solution.

According to a media release from the Ebikon company, Schindler Port 4D reduces the energy consumption of an elevator group by up to 40 percent. In addition, functions such as face recognition, robotics and digital entertainment can be integrated. For example, architects and planners can use hardware and software interfaces to regulate who has access to a building, when and where, or who is transported, and when digital entertainment is played.

“Buildings are built for people,” said Florian Troesch, who is responsible for transit management solutions. “With Schindler Port 4D, we are making buildings even more attractive, environmentally friendly and more easily accessible.”
