    Education cluster Polyfeld Muttenz

The canton of Basel-Landschaft is combining the BBZ BL, the Muttenz grammar school and the Zentrum für Brückenangebote into a joint secondary II campus at Polyfeld. Stage 1 focuses on the dismantling and conversion of the existing tower, which has been gutted from top to bottom, decontaminated and completely dismantled in the core area. The core walls, staircases, floor slab and foundations were removed in a controlled manner over an area of around 20 by 20 meters.

To ensure that the slender tower remained stable during the conversion and new construction, temporary bracing with heavy steel frames was installed on each floor. At the same time, the new construction of the building core and the construction of the new main staircase, which is to become a design center of the BBZ as a freely suspended prefabricated construction in exposed concrete, began.

Exposed concrete, workshop building and triple sports hall
All new buildings in stage 1 will be constructed in high-quality exposed concrete, with a project-specific formwork and concreting concept for uniform surfaces. The workshop building, which is around 55 meters long and 26 meters wide, is being built in three stages so that walls, columns, earthquake walls and ceilings can be constructed in parallel on each floor.

The new triple sports hall will have a complex supporting structure made of pre-stressed prestressed concrete beams, which will be assembled in stages, provisionally supported and pre-stressed after the ceiling has been concreted. This allows the hall to be flexibly divided into three smaller units at a later date. An external spiral staircase with specially developed formwork provides an architectural accent. The adjoining assembly hall and canteen is a prefabricated construction, combining exposed concrete with a composite timber ceiling and functionally linking the different parts of the building.

Life science training building in the Polyfeld
Parallel to the cantonal campus project, the Polyfeld is being given an additional focus with a new life science training center. The Basel district council has approved a contribution of around two million francs for this. Around CHF 1.7 million for the construction of the new training location at Birsfelderstrasse 46 and around CHF 390,000 for special laboratory equipment. The new building will have a net floor area of around 19,500 square meters. Cantonal funding will be provided for an eligible floor space of around 1,400 square meters.

The project is sponsored by the Aprentas training association, which intends to combine its existing locations on Lachmattstrasse and in Schweizerhalle in the new building. Aprentas, which originally emerged from the Novartis environment, offers inter-company courses for EFZ training in chemistry, biology and chemical and pharmaceutical technology. The cantonal funding strengthens Muttenz as a life science training location and complements the Polyfeld secondary school campus with a clearly profiled, practice-oriented training infrastructure for regional industry.

  • Bernese timber construction and carpenters plan joint training centre

Bernese timber construction and carpenters plan joint training centre

According to a press release, the Extraordinary General Assembly of Holzbau Schweiz Sektion Bern(hssb) has now also voted in favour of setting up a joint training centre after the Bernese Master Carpenters’ Association. The Bernese carpenters had already approved a project loan of CHF 250,000 for this at the end of May. Now the hssb members have also voted unanimously in favour of a loan of the same amount.

“This project will not only support our trainees, but also strengthen the entire wood industry in the region,” said hssb President Peter Haudenschild. “After long discussions within our association, I am delighted that we are now setting up a forward-looking training centre together with the carpenters,” says Jürg Rothenbühler, President of the Bernese Association of Master Carpenters.

The Bern Wood Training Centre will be located in Lützelflüh BE. “We will own the land there – that creates security,” emphasises Haudenschild. According to the information provided, the decision was also based on the structural and logistical possibilities on site. The planned centre will consist of four floors with space for specialised workshops, training rooms and a shared infrastructure. The new training centre should offer both associations as much flexibility as possible. The aim is to be able to react as quickly as possible to changes in the number of learners and changes in vocational training.

The wood training centre in Lützelflüh should be completed by spring 2028. The first inter-company courses are scheduled to start at the new location in August 2028.

  • New construction and renovation of the Sempach training centre

New construction and renovation of the Sempach training centre

In view of the increasing requirements in civil defence, Lucerne feels it has a responsibility to fundamentally modernise the infrastructure of the Sempach training centre. In addition to renovating the existing buildings, the project also includes the construction of new functional facilities to meet the challenges of modern training and operational conditions. This reflects the efforts to develop the centre into a leading competence centre for civil protection in the region.

The planned special credit is intended to finance both the structural improvements and the implementation of sustainable energy solutions. The canton is thus sending out a strong signal in favour of the future viability and sustainability of its civil protection services. The vote in March will show whether the people of Lucerne are prepared to invest in this pioneering measure, which will not only increase safety, but can also serve as a model for sustainable construction.

  • Innovative training centre for civil protection in Chur

Innovative training centre for civil protection in Chur

The new training centre in Meiersboda, located in the municipality of Churwalden near Chur, marks a decisive step in the development of civil protection in the region. In view of the poor condition of the previous building, which was around 50 years old, the government decided to construct a completely new building. This decision followed in-depth analyses and sustainability calculations, which showed a new building to be significantly more efficient and cost-effective than a renovation.

The “ZicZAC” project proposal, which was the winner of a competition, envisages a three-storey timber building that blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings. The design impresses with its clear structure, natural building materials and a central atrium that provides light and clarity. The building complies with the Minergie-P-Eco® standard and integrates a photovoltaic system with an output of 100 kilowatts peak on the roof.

The new centre will not only serve as a training facility, but will also function as a deployment and command centre for the cantonal command staff in the event of an emergency. It offers optimal conditions for the training and deployment of civil defence and partner organisations and helps to ensure operational readiness and resilience in crisis situations.

The financing of the project will be submitted to the Grand Council for discussion and then presented to the Grisons electorate for approval. If approved, implementation planning will begin in autumn 2024, with construction starting in spring 2025 and commissioning planned for summer 2027. The project underlines the commitment to efficient, sustainable civil protection and sets new standards for training infrastructure in the region.

Walo builds training rooms at Y-Parc

Walo Bertschinger has built the training rooms for a new training centre for professions in the automotive industry in the technology park of Yverdon-les-Bains. The construction company from Dietikon has built premises for 1500 apprentices in the Y-Parc, according to a statement on Facebook. The training centre of the Swiss Automobile Trade Association(AGVS) will combine training rooms and workshops and will be spread over four floors. Operations are scheduled to begin in August.

According to its own information, Y-Parc Swiss Technopole is the largest technology park in Switzerland with more than 200 companies on an area of 52 hectares. 1800 people are employed there. There is 130,000 square metres of space available for the companies.

According to Walo , the new building has a rectangular shape with a recess in the middle and comprises two buildings on a plot of about 8000 square metres. There is an administrative area with a total area of 4000 square metres on five levels and a second, u-shaped industrial area. This will house the mechanical workshops and training rooms with an area of 6000 square metres on four floors. In the workshops, the ceiling height is raised to between 4 and 7 metres to allow for the installation of motorbike and car lifts. There is also an area for trucks.

In the centre of the new training centre there is a landscaped terrace, above which there is a covered parking area of around 700 square metres.
