    IAZI, Informations- und Ausbildungszentrum für Immobilien AG, presented this year’s IAZI Awards at the 21st IAZI Real Estate Investment Event in Zurich. According to a press release, the Rivora Collective Foundation, based in Winterthur, received the awards for Best Residential Properties 2026 and, for the first time, Best Pension Fund.

    “We are delighted to receive this double award, which is the result of a clear strategy and strong collaboration,” said Amet Bekiri, Managing Director of Rivora Collective Foundation, in the press release. “It confirms our ongoing commitment to responsible action and sustainable quality – for the benefit of our policyholders.”

    Rivora is a long-standing partner of Auwiesen Immobilien AG. The property company based in Winterthur supports Rivora in the portfolio management of direct investments in real estate. “Being honoured twice with the prestigious IAZI award is an extraordinary confirmation of our many years of joint work,” said Christof Schmid, Managing Director of Auwiesen Immobilien AG. “Together with the Rivora Collective Foundation, we develop an investment strategy tailored to their needs and are responsible for its implementation.”

    As a pension fund without vested interests, Rivora offers companies and their employees customised pension solutions. Auwiesen Immobilien AG manages property portfolios worth over CHF 4.5 billion, primarily in German-speaking Switzerland.

    Award recognises strong performance in the mortgage business

    Swisschange Financial Services AG, a financial boutique regulated by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), has won the Baloise Broker Award 2026. The prize, awarded by Baloise Bank AG from Solothurn, is based on the parameters of submitted applications, completion rate, financing volume and mortgage portfolio.

    Four out of five mortgage applications submitted by Swisschange lead to a successful conclusion. According to the press release, the mortgage broker achieves this high success rate through careful dossier preparation. Swisschange begins long before the first bank offer with a structured analysis of the financing situation and the selection of a suitable financing partner.

    “This award confirms what we have been practising for years: Genuine buyer representation pays off measurably – for our customers and in a market comparison,” Lester Steinger, CEO and founder of Swisschange, is quoted as saying.

    Swisschange sees itself as a pioneer of independent buyer representation in the Swiss property market. The company has been assisting private clients and entrepreneurs with property, financing and asset decisions since 2003.

    EMPA wins Building Award 2025

    Cement production accounts for around 8 per cent of global CO₂ emissions, a huge lever for climate protection. This is precisely where Empa comes in. With CO₂-storing concrete, to which specially developed carbon pellets made from biochar are added. These replace part of the conventional aggregate. The trick is that the pellets absorb CO₂ and can act as a permanent carbon sink without negatively affecting the building material properties. This makes the concrete not only climate-neutral, but also potentially CO₂-negative, while remaining suitable for practical use in building and infrastructure construction.

    Outstanding engineering achievement with prospects
    Empa was honoured with the Building Award in the “Research, Development, Start-ups” category for this innovation at the end of June 2025. The most important prize for civil engineering in Switzerland. The award ceremony at the KKL Lucerne honoured outstanding projects that bring science and practice together. Empa impressed the jury with a solution that has the potential to significantly improve the carbon footprint of entire construction projects with a view to industrial feasibility.

    Pilot project already planned
    The Empa team led by Pietro Lura and Mateusz Wyrzykowski is already working with partners to further develop the CO₂-negative pellets for market use. Initial applications are in preparation, including in the NEST unit “Beyond Zero”, a module of the experimental research building of Empa and Eawag. There, CO₂-reduced and CO₂-negative building materials are tested under real conditions, which further emphasises the practical relevance of the research.

    CO₂ as a raw material of the future
    Concrete innovation is part of a broader strategy. With the “Mining the Atmosphere” research initiative, Empa is pursuing a visionary goal of transforming the economy towards a CO₂-based material cycle. The concept is to capture CO₂ directly from the atmosphere and convert it into chemical raw materials such as methane or methanol. These in turn replace fossil raw materials in the production of building materials or energy sources. At the end of their life cycle, the products are to be bound in special storage sites, a long-term storage facility for carbon.

    Foresight for construction, energy and the economy
    The approach extends far beyond the construction industry. In future, synthetic methane could be used to overcome seasonal energy imbalances and replace CO₂-intensive materials. The prerequisite is a close interlinking of materials research, process development and economic scalability. In addition to technological progress, Empa is therefore also calling for regulatory framework conditions that make CO₂ capture economically attractive.

    Innovative strength as a lever for transformation
    Empa’s award marks more than just a scientific success. It symbolises change in the construction industry. CO₂-storing materials are no longer a distant vision, but concrete tools for the construction turnaround. This could transform the industry from a problem creator to part of the solution and help buildings to actively stabilise the climate in the future.

    Security specialist Securiton AG has received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award 2024 for two products, according to a press release. The Zollikofen-based company, which specialises in security solutions, presented the STC 701 control unit for the SecuriSafe Expert intruder alarm system and the APR 70x reader for the SecuriGate access control system. According to the press release, the jury was impressed by the coherent design reduced to the essentials and the intuitive operability with a high level of user-friendliness.

    Securiton is supported by the design specialists at creative matters, based at Technopark Winterthur. The collaboration between Securiton and Meyer-Hayoz Design Engineering goes back over two decades, according to the press release. creative matters emerged from Meyer-Hayoz. For health reasons, Wolfgang Meyer-Hayoz, founder, CEO and first tenant at Technopark Winterthur, handed over a number of current projects and the corresponding data material to two long-standing employees in 2023 after prior consultation with his customers. Julian Wilczek and Dominic Kernen have been working with creative matters GmbH since the beginning of 2023. According to the press release, they had already carried out design work for Securiton at Meyer-Hayoz Design Engineering in previous years.

    The Red Dot Design Award is probably the world’s most prestigious design award. The reach and recognition of the award have a demonstrably direct and lasting influence on the market success of the award-winning products.

    Researchers from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts(HSLU) have won the Sustainability Challenge organised by the German Sustainable Building Council(DGNB) together with the Technical University of Munich(TUM). According to a press release, the circularWOOD project was awarded first place in the research category. Sonja Geier, Deputy Head of the Competence Center Typology & Planning in Architecture(CCTP) at HSLU, and Sandra Schuster from TUM accepted the award in Stuttgart on 18 June 2024 as part of the DGNB’s Sustainability Day.

    The CO2-neutral and ecologically high-quality raw material wood is becoming increasingly popular in the construction industry The circularWOOD research project aims to introduce this important raw material into a circular economy. “Today, wood does not remain part of the material cycle long enough,” Sonja Geier is quoted as saying in the press release. According to the press release, circular construction with the CO2-neutral building material wood will make an important contribution to achieving climate protection goals.

    Focus on sustainability: company achieves Gold status

    Implenia, headquartered in Opfikon, has repeatedly been awarded Gold status by EcoVadis. EcoVadis is a global provider of sustainability ratings that was founded in Paris in 2007. Implenia improved its score from 70 points in the previous year to 75 points. “We are extremely pleased that we have been able to maintain our Gold status despite EcoVadis’ stricter assessment criteria,” said Anita Eckardt, Chair of Implenia’s Sustainability Committee, in a press release. “Many of our public and private customers look for a good EcoVadis rating when awarding projects. And investors are also attaching more and more importance to sustainability ratings.”

    During the assessment period, Implenia introduced a code of conduct and made a binding commitment to human rights and to diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI). This and efforts in the areas of labour law and human resources led to a better rating than in the previous year, according to the press release. Implenia has set itself twelve “ambitious sustainability goals” for the period up to 2025.

    Companies are assessed by EcoVadis according to the aspects of environment, labour & human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. The highest award is the Platinum Medal. The awards recognise the social and environmental performance of the companies that have undergone an assessment. According to the press release, EcoVadis is “the world’s largest provider of sustainability ratings with more than 130,000 rated companies from over 180 countries”.

    Real Estate Award CEO Mara Schlumpf: “It takes courageous decision-makers”

    Frau Schlumpf, in den vergangenen Wochen war immer wieder vom «neuen» Real Estate Award zu lesen. Was ist denn so neu an diesem Event, den es bereits über 10 Jahre gibt?

    Mara Schlumpf: Wir haben sehr vieles verändert. Zum Beispiel den ganzen optischen Auftritt. Wir haben ein neues, zeitgemässes Logo, ein stimmiges Design, neue Eventkategorien, eine neue Homepage und ein neues Eventkonzept.

    Weshalb war ein Rebranding notwendig?
    Der Real Estate Award wurde im Jahr 2022 an die aktuellen Inhaber verkauft und im Jahr 2023 ein letztes Mal von meinem Vorgänger durchgeführt. Im April 2023 habe ich die Geschäftsführung der Real Estate Award AG übernommen und mich mit dem Soll und Haben des Awards auseinandergesetzt.

    Mit den Finanzen?
    Ich meine damit das immense Potenzial der Auszeichnung – und wie viel davon bisher ausgeschöpft wurde. In einem ersten Schritt versuchte ich deshalb mir ein möglichst breites und fundiertes Feedback der Sponsoren, teilnehmenden Firmen und Gäste einzuholen. Schnell zeichnete sich ab, dass es nachhaltiger und sinnvoller ist, im Grossen und Ganzen neu zu denken, anstatt an einzelnen Stellen zu schrauben. So entschied ich mich, den bestehenden Grundgedanken, das solide Fundament, die bedeutendste Auszeichnung der Bau- und Immobilienbranche beizubehalten – und daraus ein Asset zu bauen, welches unseren Bewerbern, Unterstützern und Besuchern gerecht wird. Die optische Veränderung ist ein wichtiger Teil davon – weit mehr als nur oberflächliche Kosmetik. Sie steht für einen neuen Zeitabschnitt des Real Estate Awards. Das Rebranding stellt sicher, dass die Bau- und Immobilienbranche, allen voran unsere Partner und Gäste, diese neue Ära klar erkennen. Schon vor der nächsten Verleihung am 24. Oktober 2024 im Trafo in Baden.

    Weshalb haben Sie sich für eine komplett neue Location, das Trafo in Baden, entschieden?
    Der bisherige Veranstaltungsort wird unseren Erwartungen an einen exklusiven, eleganten Real Estate Award nicht mehr gerecht. Wir erwarten von den Firmen, welche sich für einen Real Estate Award bewerben, herausragende Leistungen. Wir können nicht den Anspruch an uns selbst stellen, ein Gütesiegel für Qualität zu sein, und diese Qualität dann nicht leben. Mit dem Trafo in Baden haben wir eine exklusive Location gefunden, die unseren Erwartungen gerecht wird – und die unseren Gästen einen unvergesslichen Abend bieten kann. Gleichzeitig ist das Trafo in Baden mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln sehr gut erreichbar, und auch mit dem Auto ist die Hinreise unbeschwerlich. Das Team des Trafos kann mit viel Erfahrung in Sachen Event-Hosting glänzen und bietet eine hervorragende Infrastruktur – zum Beispiel durch die Beschaffenheit des Saals, in welchem die Verleihung stattfinden wird. Und auch kulinarisch kann das Trafo in Baden mehr als bisherige Austragungsorte des Real Estate Awards.

    Wie geht es nach dem Rebranding weiter?
    Die Bewerbungsfrist für die aktuelle Ausgabe des Real Estate Awards hat begonnen. Ich hoffe auf viele interessante Firmen und Projekte.     Die Kategorie «Nachhaltigkeit» sticht hervor. Bisher wurde dazu kein Preis vergeben. Wie kommt es nun dazu?
    Der Begriff Nachhaltigkeit ist sehr weitreichend. Für alle bisherigen und auch für die aktuellen Kategorien ist Nachhaltigkeit ein Bewertungskriterium. Hinsichtlich Klimawandel aber auch hinsichtlich Fachkräftemangel wird das Thema immer wichtiger. Wir müssen nicht nur Immobilien bauen und Produkte herstellen, welche dauerhaft Bestand haben und unserer Umwelt nicht schaden – auch innerhalb der Firmen braucht es soziale Nachhaltigkeit. Spätestens 2024 sollte es Geschäftsführern und Recruitern bewusst sein, dass es sinnvoller ist eine Unternehmenskultur zu leben, welche die Angestellten zum Bleiben motiviert, als ständig neues Personal zu suchen. Es geht also nicht nur um erneuerbare Energie, pionierhafte, nachhaltige Bauweise und Umweltzertifikate. Es geht auch um Unternehmen, welche den Früchtekorb im Pausenraum aus den Benefits in den Stellenangeboten streichen und echte Bedürfnisse der Angestellten aufgreifen. Es geht in dieser Kategorie um Wertschätzung: gegenüber unserer Umwelt und unseren Mitmenschen.

    Konkret?
    Die Bedürfnisse von Angestellten haben sich verändert – spätestens seit der Pandemie. Wie nachhaltig ist ein Arbeitsverhältnis, in welchem ein Chef seinen Angestellten Home-Office verbietet, weil er an der Produktivität seines Personals zweifelt? Vertrauen und Respekt sind eine nachhaltige Investition. Beim Umweltschutz und nachhaltigem Bauen ist es ähnlich: Es braucht mutige Entscheider, die langfristig kalkulieren und so Probleme lösen, bevor sie akut werden. Ich denke dabei zum Beispiel an die tiefe jährliche Sanierungsquote von 1 Prozent im Schweizer Gebäudepark. Je länger wir daran nichts ändern, desto massiver werden die Folgewirkungen für die nachrückenden Generationen. Langfristiges, ganzheitliches Denken hat Zukunft.

    Mit Blick auf die Award Verleihung: Worauf freuen Sie sich besonders?
    Klarer Fall: Den neuen Real Estate Award unseren Gästen präsentieren zu können! Bereits jetzt erreichen mich Zusagen aus Politik und Wirtschaft. Das grosse Interesse an dem gewandelten Award zeigt mir, dass wir mit dem neuen Konzept auf dem richtigen Weg sind. Ich bin ausserordentlich gespannt auf das Feedback – zu den neuen Unterhaltungsblöcken, der neuen Location und dem kulinarischen Erlebnis.

    Aarau Climate Prize goes to AEW Energie AG

    AEW Energie AG has won the Aarau Climate Prize 2023. The prize is awarded annually by the city council of Aarau for particularly innovative achievements, exceptional commitment or extensive projects that contribute to sustainability, explained AEW Energie in a press release. The Aargau-based energy service provider was honoured for its measures for progressive and sustainable mobility management within its own company.

    AEW Energie has set itself the goal of becoming CO2-neutral by 2040 at the latest. To achieve this, the energy service provider is focussing on CO2-neutral electricity production from hydropower, photovoltaics and wind power. However, a considerable proportion of emissions are currently generated by the mobility of the company’s employees.

    AEW Energie has also developed and implemented a series of measures in this area as part of the move from the high-rise building in Obere Vorstadt to the Aeschbach neighbourhood. On the one hand, working from home was made more flexible. On the other hand, sustainable mobility for employees was supported, for example through the provision of shared bicycles, bicycle parking spaces and electric pool cars. The various initiatives were largely driven by Nicola Ruch, Head of Business Development at AEW and Mobility Management Project Manager.

    “We are delighted to receive the climate prize from the city of Aarau,” said AEW CEO Marc Ritter in the press release. “Although we have not yet implemented everything planned with mobility management, the award recognises what we have achieved so far and we see the climate prize we have received as a great motivation to continue to consistently pursue our CO2 targets.”

    Ein Pionier in der Nanotechnologie zur Energiegewinnung

    Im Zentrum dieser bahnbrechenden Forschung steht die Verbindung von Thermodynamik und Quantenmechanik, um durch Nanotechnologie effiziente Energiesysteme zu entwickeln. Der Wissenschaftler, der sich dieser Herausforderung stellt, ist bereits seit zwölf Jahren im Bereich der Quantenelektronik tätig und hat seinen Fokus auf die Umwandlung von Abwärme in elektrische Energie gerichtet. Seine Arbeit mit Graphen-Nanobändern, einem Material aus einer einzelnen Schicht von Kohlenstoffatomen, verspricht neue Wege in der Energiegewinnung.

    Die Qualität seiner Forschung wurde bereits mit prestigeträchtigen Auszeichnungen wie dem ERC Starting Grant und einem Eccellenza-Professorenstipendium des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds gewürdigt. Der Forscher, der sowohl eine Forschungsgruppe an der Empa leitet als auch Assistenzprofessor für Quantenelektronik an der ETH Zürich ist, hat seine akademische Laufbahn an der TU Delft begonnen und sich stets für konkrete Anwendungen der Physik interessiert.

    In seinem Labor an der Empa erforscht er die Anwendung von Graphen-Nanobändern, die an der Empa unter der Leitung von Roman Fasel hergestellt werden. Die spezifischen physikalischen Eigenschaften dieser Bänder sind entscheidend für ihre Nutzbarkeit in einer Reihe von Quantentechnologien. Eine bedeutende Entdeckung seiner Gruppe war, dass die Quanteneffekte dieser Bänder auch bei -23°C noch weitgehend erhalten bleiben, was die Möglichkeit ihrer nwendung bei Raumtemperatur in Aussicht stellt.

    Die Technologie, an der der Wissenschaftler arbeitet, befindet sich noch in der Entwicklungsphase, und die Herausforderungen in der Nanofabrikation sind gewaltig. Trotzdem ist sein Ziel, die fundamentalen Grundlagen für die Anwendung dieser fortschrittlichen Technologie zu schaffen und damit ihren praktischen Einsatz in der Zukunft zu ermöglichen. Seine Forschung könnte letztendlich dazu beitragen, den Stromverbrauch elektronischer Geräte zu reduzieren und einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Energieeffizienz zu leisten.

    Walo, headquartered in Dietikon, operates internationally and is a fourth-generation family business. According to the company’s website , Walo has been combining consistency and innovation for 105 years. The Walo Group employs 2,450 people at 21 locations in three countries.

    EcoVadis evaluates the sustainability performance of companies in the areas of environment, working conditions, procurement and ethics. According to the announcement, over 90,000 companies have already been assessed.

    The team of experts particularly praised the “very good, long-term planning basis”, in which sustainable topics and biodiversity are given high priority. The binding basis for the near-natural maintenance and management of urban green and open spaces was also praised. In addition, the green spaces would be integrated to reduce heat.
