  • AEW Energie AG receives Energy Transition Award in the area of mobility

AEW Energie AG receives Energy Transition Award in the area of mobility

As part of an extensive survey of over 1,600 energy suppliers in the DACH region, AEW impressed with its impressive portfolio in the area of mobility. In particular, the products from the mobility sector convinced the jury. The quality model developed by EUPD Research evaluates the offers of energy suppliers in the context of the energy strategy and AEW was able to achieve outstanding results in the mobility category.

The data collection was carried out from the customers’ point of view, whereby the internet presence of the energy suppliers was examined by means of mystery shopping. The model covers the four key areas of electricity, heat, energy efficiency and mobility. Within each area, the extent to which the energy suppliers provide high-quality products and services for customers was examined. AEW has already received an award in the “Electricity” category in 2018 and in the “Energy transition” category in 2021.

The winners of the award were announced at an official ceremony in Munich on 15 June 2023. Arian Rohs, Head of Mobility Solutions, and Adrian Lerch, Team Leader E-Mobility, proudly accepted the coveted award for AEW in the Mobility category. Their presence at the award ceremony in Munich underlines the company’s commitment and success in promoting sustainable mobility. “For us, the award is a great honour and confirmation of our efforts to drive forward the energy strategy in the area of mobility. This award is an incentive for us to continue offering high-quality products and services and to shape the mobility of the future,” says Arian Rohs.

  • Winner of the Svit Award 2022 H&B Real Estate AG

Winner of the Svit Award 2022 H&B Real Estate AG

In order to make condominium mandates more attractive, the winner of the award, H&B Real Estate AG, has adapted a proptech solution with which condominium owner meetings and the upstream and downstream processes can be digitised. The condominium owners can view documents independently and around the clock, and managers can record agenda items throughout the year, which are then effortlessly compiled and distributed. Votes can be counted more easily and decisions recorded immediately. A ticketing system simplifies communication; in addition to owners, tenants can also be informed directly.

To ensure that the software solution adequately takes into account the needs of property management, H&B Real Estate AG entered into an innovation partnership with the developers in 2020. The cooperation ensured that management processes were correctly mapped and problematic media and system discontinuities were eliminated. Thanks to more efficient processes, the company was able to acquire additional mandates. It was also possible to save specialised staff through the improved structuring of meetings. Thanks to the task and order system, enquiries can be dealt with more quickly. Conclusion from the first experiences: The management of condominiums has not only become more efficient overall, but also more transparent.

Certimo’s employees can now digitally handle the work steps from the tendering of rental properties and tenant selection to the signing of contracts and deposit payments. The company thus saves a lot of time and can use it for other tasks and projects that were previously neglected in day-to-day business. Another benefit of digital filing and processes is the flexibility of the work location. This means that skilled workers can be recruited from a larger catchment area.

Behind the success is not simply a proptech solution, but the willingness to try out digital products, to actively support the further development of a promising solution with expertise and know-how, and to make the introduction of new processes and functions in the company as easy and convenient as possible. Facilitations were demonstrated for step-by-step onboarding and new procedures were documented in concise checklists. The decision to digitise new business completely and to digitise existing business only in the event of changes enabled a resource-saving rollout. Building on the successes, the next digitisation steps were planned.

Roche shows how Big Data enables smart management of commercial space. The jury particularly appreciates that the Roche team is not simply oriented towards what is technically feasible. The insight that the added value is generated by end users and that technical innovations require a use case sharpens the focus on the essentials, especially in complex digitalisation projects: the company’s success. As part of the Smart Building Initiative, Roche collects building and facility data that supports employees and service providers in their work and makes the company more attractive, efficient and sustainable. In order to prepare relevant information and decision-making bases for buildings with varying degrees of automation, the Digital & Site Engineering team uses an open IoT (Internet of Things) platform and “use cases” that are developed with users.

  • Viboo wins Empa Innovation Award

    Viboo wins Empa Innovation Award

Every two years since 2006, Empa has honored in-house innovations or successful technology transfers from science to industry with the Empa Innovation Award. This year, the CHF 5,000 prize went to the Empa spin-off viboo , the research institute said in a statement . The young company based in Dübendorf has developed a self-learning algorithm that uses weather and building data to calculate the optimum energy use of a building several hours in advance.

The algorithm developed by Felix Bünning and Benjamin Huber together with Empa Senior Researcher Matthias Sulzer in Empa's Urban Energy System Lab has already been tested in pilot tests in the NEST innovation building and in an Empa administration building. It has been shown that the approach can save around a quarter of the heating energy, according to the statement.

For the application, only the analogue thermostats have to be replaced by intelligent thermostats. Here, viboo is already working with Danfoss and wants to get other manufacturers of such thermostats, such as ABB and Schneider Electric , on board for further pilot projects. Huber wants to reciprocate the award with a contribution that “empa will get through the coming heating period well”, the viboo co-founder is quoted as saying in the press release.

  • Dietiker Kindergarten receives architecture award

    Dietiker Kindergarten receives architecture award

The Steinmürli kindergarten, which received the “best architects 21” award, was built in 2019 as a modern wooden element construction. According to a media release from the City of Dietikon, it was designed by the Schmid Ziörjen Architects in Zurich. The jury's description of the award-winning building states that the Steinmürli school complex is a cluster of orthogonally arranged school and gym buildings. The new kindergarten, placed at right angles to the existing buildings, would naturally be integrated into the overall complex. This would reorganize the open spaces and create a well-sunlit and spacious outdoor play area between the existing kindergarten and the new building.

The jury that awarded the award consists of the architects Professor Johannes Modersohn from Berlin, Yves Moreau from Paris and Patrick Schmid from Zurich.

The best architects award was launched in 2006 in order, according to information on its website, to filter out the best and most interesting of the German-speaking architecture scene and to show it to the public. In 2015 the prize was opened to participants from all over Europe.

  • Empa presents three innovation awards

    Empa presents three innovation awards

The Eidgenössische Materialprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt ( Empa ) has honored three of its groundbreaking projects and achievements with the Empa Innovation Award. The prize, endowed with CHF 5,000, has been awarded every two years since 2006. In doing so, Empa honors the efforts of its researchers to build further bridges between science and business with applied, market-oriented research.

According to a press release by Empa, the first prize goes to the novel tissue adhesive technology Nanoglue. It was developed by researchers at the Particles-Biology Interactions Laboratory at Empa in St.Gallen in collaboration with the Nanoparticle Systems Engineering Lab at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich . Their radically new approach uses the wound-healing properties of inorganic nanoparticles. The inexpensive materials could be manufactured on a large scale. The “unique technology” is now being brought to market maturity by the Zurich start-up anavo medical , which has yet to be founded.

The transparent face mask from the Hello Mask project by Empa and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne ( EPFL ) also received an award. It consists of a fine membrane with a pore size of around 100 nanometers. This membrane allows air to pass through, but holds back viruses and bacteria. “The fully see-through mask was developed primarily with the aim of improving the relationship between caregivers and patients,” says researcher Joshua Avossa. The Geneva start-up HMCare has been working on the market launch of the Hello Mask from Empa and EPFL since 2020. It should be available in mid-2021.

The software platform Urban Sympheny for planning sustainable energy systems is the third winner. The Empa spin-off of the same name, based in Dübendorf, helps planners to identify optimal solutions for their location and their customers. The goal is energy and cost efficiency. The innovative platform was developed in Empa’s Urban Energy Systems department. Last year Venture Kick awarded Urban Sympheny 50,000 francs.

  • The first multi-energy systems from Soleco are in use

The first multi-energy systems from Soleco are in use

A ready-to-use multi-energy management system has evolved from an award-winning product idea from Soleco . It has already been put into operation in two single-family houses in Maur in the canton of Zurich. It will soon also be used in an apartment building there. According to a message from startupticker.ch, talks are currently underway about equipping a district under construction in Zurich.

In the year it was founded, Soleco, together with its partners Geminise and Vela Solaris , won the CSEM Digital Journey Award in the amount of 100,000 francs in 2018. The private and non-profit Swiss Electronics and Microtechnology Research Center ( CSEM ) claims to promote "added value for a sustainable world". CSEM provided Soleco with technological expertise in order to realize their "groundbreaking digital idea".

Together they developed an intelligent and predictive control system. The software intended for laypeople is based on weather forecasts, the available infrastructure, consumption habits of the residents and energy costs on the market. "The platform then functions like a conductor who manages the resources autonomously and reduces costs," the message says.

"All decisions that the control system makes are associated with an optimal cost," explains Tomasz Gorecki, one of the CSEM engineers. "If, for example, the photovoltaic system is in operation, the controller can determine whether it is better to charge your electric vehicle, store the energy or sell it to the grid." The platform works for individual households, but is above all suitable for self-consumption communities that jointly use different renewable energy sources for several apartments.
