    Basel Area location promotion posts record number of company start-ups

    Basel Area Business & Innovation supported a total of 96 start-ups in 2022. This represents a new record, the location promotion agency of the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and Jura informs in a statement. Compared to the previous year, 20 more start-ups were supported by Basel Area Business & Innovation.

    The number of companies newly established in the Basel Area cantons in 2022 remained stable at 35 compared to 2021. “The Basel Area economic region has had another highly satisfactory year,” Christof Klöpper, CEO of Basel Area Business & Innovation, is quoted as saying in the statement. “Both in terms of newly established companies and company start-ups, we achieved excellent figures in 2022.”

    Of the total of 96 newly founded companies, 21 are active in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors. This is followed by services with 18, construction with eleven and ICT with ten start-ups. Many of the start-ups were able to benefit from the location promotion’s venture monitoring programme. In the press release, Basel Area Business & Innovation singles out the cleantech company Kuori. Since its founding in spring 2022, it has already raised around 2.3 million euros in investor funding.

    Of the total of 35 settlements, 24 were in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors. In terms of regions of origin, Europe leads the way with 14 companies. This is followed by Asia with seven and the USA with six newly established companies in Switzerland. A total of eight companies from other cantons moved to the Basel Area last year.

    Basel Area Business & Innovation has a new podcast . From now on, the location promotion will present interesting personalities and their view of the location. In the first episode , Hans-Florian Zeilhofer starts.

    The specialist with the titles of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Dr. hc has lived and worked in Basel for 18 years. The Upper Bavarian works as a professor at the University of Basel , as chief physician at the specialist clinic for oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University Hospital Basel and as a senior consultant at the Cantonal Hospital in Aarau . At the same time, he initiated many high-tech research projects and founded various start-ups.

    Among other things, he is one of the founders of the Basel start-up AOT . It created a laser bone cutting robot called Carlo. In this 30-minute podcast, he explains the role played by a leg disk that Zeilhofer bought from a butcher. What he particularly appreciates about the Basel Area is the short distances, the proximity to the border and the dynamic ecosystem: "One of the main advantages of the Basel Area is that all major companies in the life sciences and medtech sectors are on site."

    With this podcast and its interview guests, the makers of the Basel Area want to provide a platform. Their discussions should address what distinguishes the business and innovation location, which innovations could cause a sensation and, for example, whether researchers can be good CEOs.     Fabian Streiff becomes the top Zurich location promoter

    There is a change at the top of the business location promotion department at the Zurich Office for Economics and Labor. Markus Assfalg is retiring after eleven years as head of location promotion, as announced by the office. He will be replaced by Fabian Streiff . The 35-year-old has been with the Basel Area Business & Innovation since the beginning of 2019 and heads the DayOne healthcare initiative. Prior to that, he was co-head of Basel-Stadt's economic development department.

    Streiff holds a doctorate in economic geography from the University of Bern and a Master of Science from the University of Zurich .

    One of the first to congratulate the cantonal location promotion and to Fabian Streiff is the location promoter of the city of Schlieren , Albert Schweizer. "We are very pleased with the choice of Fabian Streiff," he says. "We have known Fabian Streiff for a long time and have followed his work in the canton of Basel-Stadt very carefully."
