    Holcim divests businesses in Uganda and Tanzania

    Holcim has signed agreements to divest its businesses in Uganda and Tanzania. According to a press release issued by the Zug-based building materials manufacturer, its local subsidiary in Uganda, Hima Cement Ltd, has been sold to the Sarrai Group for an enterprise value of USD 120 million.

    Holcim has also agreed to sell its 65 per cent stake in Mbeya Cement Company Ltd in Tanzania to the Amsons Group for an undisclosed amount. The completion of both transactions is subject to the respective regulatory approvals.

    “These divestments advance our strategy to consolidate our leadership position in core markets as the world’s leading provider of innovative and sustainable building solutions,” said Martin Kriegner, Regional Head Asia, Middle East & Africa. “We are delighted to have found strategic and trusted partners in the Sarrai Group and the Amsons Group, who are ideally positioned to develop these businesses in the long term.”

    Zug-based building materials company Holcim is investing in venture capital fund Suffolk Technologies, according to a media release. The amount of the investment is not disclosed there. According to media reports, the amount is in the high single-digit millions.

    According to its own announcement, Suffolk Technologies now has 110 million dollars at its disposal to support innovative start-ups in the construction industry. Among other things, the focus will be on construction solutions that focus on sustainability or artificial intelligence.

    According to Holcim, the company will not only be involved as an investor. The company also wants to offer start-ups access to its technologies and expertise. Holcim’s goal is to drive the sustainable transformation of the industry, for example through low-carbon and circular construction.

    Suffolk Technologies is part of the American construction company Suffolk and is based in the US state of Massachusetts.

    Holcim is looking for ideas for sustainable construction

    On February 1, Holcim started the application period for the third edition of its Startup Accelerator Program . Start-ups from all over the world are invited to apply and accelerate sustainable construction with their innovative solutions. The six-month program runs from May to November 2022.

    "The Holcim Accelerator Program enables us to connect with the brightest minds in the world to drive disruptive breakthroughs," Holcim CEO Jan Jenisch said in a press release . "I invite this year's startups to think outside the box in all dimensions of construction, from circular construction to intelligent building design."

    As in previous years, the specialty chemicals company Sika is a partner in the acceleration program. New partners for this year's edition include French company Bouygues Construction and British engineering consultants Mott MacDonald .

    Swiss explorer and environmentalist Bertrand Piccard, founder of the Solar Impulse Foundation , contributes a call to action: “The construction industry has a key role to play in accelerating our world's transition to net zero. Holcim's Accelerator is a unique incubator for start-ups around the world to innovate for our planet.”
