Solar diesel to make construction machinery more climate-friendly

The construction company Eberhard Bau from Kloten will in future operate its machinery with solar diesel from the Zurich-based cleantech company Synhelion. The long-term purchase agreement, which has now been announced in a press release, provides for the use of renewable diesel from 2027 onwards. According to Synhelion, this will reduce net CO2 emissions by up to 100 per cent compared to fossil fuels. The sustainable fuels can be used in all existing combustion engines.

Eberhard Bau is Synhelion’s first customer in the construction industry, which has had little leverage to defossilise construction machinery and construction sites. Until now, solar diesel has been used by companies in the aviation, shipping and road transport sectors. Construction machinery, however, is heavy, is used in undeveloped terrain and is difficult to electrify due to its high power requirements. Solar diesel provides a sustainable solution for CO2 reduction “where there was previously no viable alternative,” says Silvan Eberhard, Head of Logistics at Eberhard Unternehmungen.

According to its own information, Synhelion has been operating the world’s first industrial plant for the production of solar fuels since 2024 with DAWN, which manufactures in Germany. The construction of the first commercial plant is in the planning stage and is scheduled to go into operation in 2027.

In addition to Eberhard Bau AG, Swiss International Air Lines, Pilatus Aircraft, Zurich Airport, AMAG Group and the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company have signed purchase agreements for renewable fuel with Synhelion.

ETH spin-off teaches the construction industry how to save money

The ETH spin-off is making its mark on the grounds of Innovation Park Zurich. A three-and-a-half-ton dumper truck is presented at customer demos with the specially developed hybrid drive. The construction industry is facing enormous challenges in view of the three gigatons of CO₂ emissions produced by its machines worldwide. The hybrid drive enables a reduction of 30 to 50 percent in fuel consumption and emissions. A revolution for construction companies facing increasingly strict environmental regulations.

Efficiency and development as an ongoing task
The pressure to innovate is high. In order to remain competitive and meet future requirements, the team is constantly working on further developments and optimizing the technology for various applications. Cooperation with construction and machinery companies ensures practical solutions, while the location in the IPZ pavilion offers ideal conditions for research and development.

    From prototype to series production
Following intensive collaboration with partners, series production is imminent. This means that the innovative hybrid drive will soon be widely used and make a significant contribution to decarbonization and cost reduction in the construction industry. The technology combines power and flexibility with ecological responsibility. A model that will give the Swiss construction industry a new boost.

The company impressively demonstrates how technological innovations master the balancing act between efficiency, economy and sustainability. The path to the future of construction leads via intelligent drives.

  • More efficient cleaning solutions for construction and industry

More efficient cleaning solutions for construction and industry

According to a press release, the Frutiger Company based in Winterthur had a successful week at the Bauma trade fair in Munich with a lot of professional exchange. Many visitors took advantage of the world’s leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment to find out about the newly structured product range.

There was particular interest in the MobyDick On tire washing system produced by Frutiger, a joint development with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, according to the press release. With its flow-optimized geometry and innovative nozzle positions, it sets new standards in terms of efficiency and washing power.

In addition to manufacturing MobyDick tire washing systems, Frutiger specializes in cleaning systems for dust control and rough cleaning of wheeled and tracked vehicles and other construction machinery (demucking).

All three divisions were on display at Bauma, newly divided into the Standard Line and the Tailor Made Line. The new structure of the portfolio allows for the fast and efficient provision of standardized solutions for common requirements and tailor-made systems for individual challenges.

Adaptive MobyDick systems were presented as an innovation in dust control. They have been expanded to include self-sufficient variants and offer improved flexibility on platforms with an integrated generator and water tank or on mobile towers. Frutiger also demonstrated a complete demucking system for cleaning construction and military vehicles. The solution helps to save costs for personnel, downtime and water consumption.

Baumag construction machinery fair invites you to Lucerne

Specialists from the main and ancillary construction trades can meet from January 13 to 16, 2022 at the 21st Baumag construction machinery trade fair in Lucerne. In the coming year it will be the only specialized trade fair in this sector in Switzerland, according to a press release .

After a three-year break, the exhibition space is already well booked. “This shows that Baumag is an important Swiss presentation platform for the industry,” Exhibition Director Andreas Hauenstein is quoted in the press release.

The exhibitor Baukader Schweiz takes part in a large part of the program. The management organization in the construction industry offers a keynote speech on every day of the fair, including topics such as machine control, sustainability, safety and ecology. In addition to the presentations, there should be a practical part.

The visitors expected a “well-functioning trade fair operation in a familiar environment”. Wearing masks is not necessary thanks to an obligation to show a certificate of vaccination against the coronavirus. Gastronomy offers could be used without restriction and exhibitors serve their visitors at their stands.

The fair takes place regularly every two years. This year, the already fully booked Baumag was canceled due to the corona pandemic.
