    Biogas plant to be converted to biomethane production

    Axpo Biomasse AG now operates a biogas processing plant in Aarberg instead of the previous combined heat and power plant. The fermentation plant in Aarberg processes around 20,000 tonnes of regional biomass into electricity and natural fertiliser every year. The biogas produced in this process is now processed into biomethane and fed directly into the existing gas network.

    Previously, the biogas was used to generate electricity and heat. The changeover is intended to make more efficient use of the energy content of the biomass used. “In this way, we are making another important contribution to the decarbonisation of the energy supply and to regional value creation,” says Daniel Gobbo, Head of Axpo’s Biomass Business Unit.

    The biomethane produced is purchased by Energie Wasser Bern (ewb), the energy supplier for the city of Bern. According to the announcement, ewb has signed a contract for the complete purchase of the production. Transport will be via the Seelandgas AG network. For possible surplus quantities, Gasverbund Mittelland (GVM) is also building a pressure boosting station so that the gas can be fed into the Gasverbund Mittelland high-pressure network.

    By purchasing the gas, Energie Wasser Bern is contributing to the promotion of biogas production in Switzerland. “By purchasing gas from the Aarberg plant, ewb is consistently pursuing its strategy for a CO2-neutral energy future and strengthening sustainable security of supply,” says Marcel Ottenkamp, Head of Energy Management at ewb.

    Renergon International AG wants to set new standards for decentralized energy production. To this end, the Lengwil-based company, which specializes in technologies for generating clean energy, organic fertilizer and compost from organic waste and residual materials, has developed a mini biogas plant with a fuel cell. The RSD XS “was specially developed for farms in Switzerland and offers maximum efficiency on a minimum footprint,” writes Renergon in a press release on the product launch.

    At the heart of the system is a 2-digester system. Here, 2800 to 3500 tons of solid manure can be fermented annually. The biogas produced is utilized in the fuel cell with an efficiency of up to 80 percent. In addition to green electricity, process heat is also generated for operation.

    Each of the two digester boxes is 15 meters long, 5.5 meters wide and 4.5 meters high. They house a gas storage roof as well as a technical and percolate cellar. In total, the plant requires an area of between 750 and 1000 square meters.

    Biogas production attracts interest in Laufental-Thierstein

    Erdgas AG Laufenstein-Thierstein(GASAG), based in Münchenstein, is clarifying where a biogas plant can be built in the region and how it can be financed. The plant would have to be located near a gas pipeline, for example at the Müsch gas station in Laufen, it writes in a letter to farmers in the region. For building law reasons, farmers would have to own the biogas and processing plant. GASAG would guarantee the purchase of the biogas.

    The regional gas supplier based in Münchenstein has had a potential survey carried out in recent months. According to a press release, BOHA AG, which it commissioned, asked 38 farmers in the region whether they would be prepared to supply slurry and manure and accept the residual materials. 23 farmers with a maximum total of 2000 livestock units declared their willingness to participate. This corresponds to a potential of 7 to 8 gigawatt hours. This could cover 20 per cent of GASAG’s consumption.

    Founded in 1993, GASAG is owned by Primeo Wärmeholding AG, the municipalities of Breitenbach, Büsserach, Dittingen, Meltingen and Zwingen and the town of Laufen. The business is managed by Primeo Energie.

    IWB takes a stake in Agro Energie Schwyz

    IWB continues to grow with renewable energies. According to its own information, it joins the heating network of Agro Energie Schwyz AG ( AES ). Since 2006, it has built a modern network of over 100 kilometers in the Schwyz valley basin with state-of-the-art production facilities. A wood-fired thermal power station , an ORC system and a biogas system supply around 1,500 customers. The aim of AES is to build and operate a regional, independent and CO2-neutral energy supply in the region. The operator also attaches great importance to local added value.

    IWB takes over shares from the largest shareholder, the Profond pension fund. Profond was looking for an investor with proven expertise in heat supply and a credible ecological focus. With this investment, IWB is following its strategy of decarbonising the heat supply, also outside the canton of Basel-Stadt.
