Wingtra’s mapping drones support the French construction industry

Wintgra and SITECH France, a digital construction and digital solutions company owned by Trimble, have entered into a partnership. According to an announcement from Wingtra, this collaboration brings together its own mapping drones as a supplier of valuable geodata with SITECH’s expertise in the use of digital technologies for earthworks, road and linear projects, topographical measures, quarries and technical landfills. The French company is based in the Île-de-France region.

As SITECH enables the seamless integration of Wingtra’s reliable data acquisition, this partnership will advance the industry with improved geodata. This will serve to model construction sites more efficiently, improve project planning and optimise processes.

According to the press release, both partners are supporting proactive companies in building smarter. This emphasises their commitment to innovation, productivity and reducing the carbon footprint in the construction industry.

Wingtra has new distributor in Taiwan

Wingtra continues to expand: as the Zurich-based manufacturer of mapping drones announces, it can now also tap into the market potential in Taiwan with its new distribution partner Century Instruments. Based in Taichung City, Taiwan, the company has been focusing on its country’s surveying market for 30 years. According to a company statement, it now offers Wingtra’s drones in addition to expert advice and top-notch equipment.

The high-precision, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drones, which are easy to operate, specialise in GIS, the geographic information system for mapping technology. They were developed by the company, founded in 2016 as a spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich(ETH), specifically for aerial surveying and mapping in the construction industry.

The Wingtra drones provide consistent, high-quality survey data faster and at lower cost than other surveying tools, even for large areas and with high resolution and accuracy, Wyss Zurich says. The foundation supports Wingtra and other translational projects at ETH and the University of Zurich.

In June and July this year, Wingtra has already announced the establishment of business relationships with two new distribution partners in Mexico and a company in Canada. One of its investors, Seattle-based venture capital firm DiamondStream Partners, had announced in March 2023, following the successful completion of a $22 million Series B financing round, that it would support Wingtra as it enters new markets on the North and South American continents.

Drone conducts measurement flights in cement works

An important milestone was reached this week at the Holcim cement plant in Siggenthal. After several years of research, the special drone from the Zurich start-up Voliro carried out its first official measurement flight campaign there. According to a press release, important measurements were taken to determine the steel wall thicknesses of the cement kiln and the cyclone preheater.

Voliro, a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ( ETH ), specializes in the development of flying robots for the inspection and maintenance of industrial plants. Your drones can be equipped with different sensors and carry out visual as well as thermal and contact-based measurements. A special feature of the drones is that they can rotate around all axes thanks to a special rotor system, which allows them to maneuver in vertical positions and even upside down. Thanks to the 360-degree design, they are also suitable for use when taking measurements on curved and inclined surfaces.

According to the press release, the use of such special drones at great heights is considered a world first. The method saved both time and money. The use of drones also increases work safety.

According to the information, Holcim has been accompanying Voliro's product development since 2019. The global cement company from Zug is making its infrastructure in Siggenthal available to the start-up for test flights and supporting it with its specialist knowledge.

  • Drone creates digital twin of Zurich

Drone creates digital twin of Zurich

Wingtra , a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ( ETH ), manufactures special drones for aerial photography and remote sensing. It combines the positive properties of multi-rotors and fixed-wing aircraft. The Wingtra drone takes off and lands vertically like a helicopter. At the same time, however, it flies forward as efficiently as an airplane. Thanks to its high payload, the drone can also carry a wide range of cameras.

Wingtra recently launched the WingtraOne GEN II. This drone enables a new, angled camera configuration for high-quality 3D drone mapping. In order to use the development immediately, Wingtra has created a digital twin of the city of Zurich.

According to a media release , the drone only needed six hours of flight for the 3D mapping of the city of Zurich. One pixel in the 3D model corresponds to 3 centimeters of information from the real world. It thus represents "a completely new level of detail".

According to Maximilian Boosfeld, co-founder and CEO of Wingtra, the new Dorohne is “the perfect choice for capturing infrastructure – from a single industrial plant to entire cities”. Detailed 3D data could help city administrations, town planners, engineers and architects, for example, to increase the quality of life in urban areas, to plan critical infrastructures and to simulate changes in the environment.
