    Compact location brings advice to the city centre

    IKEA has opened a new Plan and Order Point in Bern, as detailed in a press release. The Plan and Order Point format is primarily used for planning and inspiration for new projects, particularly in the kitchen sector. According to Spreitenbach-based IKEA Schweiz AG, every second order now involves services such as delivery, assembly or planning. The Plan and Order Point format has been developed for the corresponding realisation. The compact locations are located in the city centre, as is now also the case in Bern.

    “I am delighted that we are able to offer our Plan and Order Points in another region with Bern,” said Janie Bisset, CEO and CSO of IKEA Switzerland, in the press release. “The advantage is obvious: short distances and personal advice make our range accessible to even more people.”

    IKEA Switzerland has already opened Plan and Order Points in Zurich, Chur and Winterthur since 2022. Three employees are now available for customers in Bern. They can also order items there directly and have them delivered to their home or collect them from a store. “With the new location, we are bringing this service closer to the people in the capital and giving even more households the opportunity to enjoy beautiful and affordable living,” says Florence Stauffer, Head of the Planning Studio.

    Lista Office LO, based in Degersheim, has expanded its LO Education system to include a version of the LO Solo table. The table is mobile and infinitely height-adjustable and is now also available with a lower adjustment range, according to a press release from the internationally active manufacturer of office furniture. This means that the LO Solo table can also redefine teaching methods in primary schools. LO Education is a convertible table system for individual or group workstations.

    According to Lista Office LO, the furnishing system fulfils the requirements of modern school life by being quiet, quick and flexible to reconfigure. This has become necessary as the traditional form of frontal teaching has given way to independent thinking, creativity and communication. “The new diverse forms of teaching are only possible with a flexible set-up,” it says.

    Other elements of LO Education include tables and movable walls that can be grouped into different shapes thanks to castors. With the help of a magnetic solution, these can be connected to each other without tools and with little noise. According to the company, the LO Solo tables are equipped with holders for material boxes.

    Basel receives multi-billion euro immune research institute

    The Botnar Foundation has donated one billion Swiss francs to establish the Botnar Institute of Immune Engineering (BIIE). This institute will be located in Basel, more precisely in Allschwil, and aims to develop novel immune-based solutions for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. The BIIE is being set up in collaboration with the University of Oxford and ETH Zurich, with other international partners to follow.

    Strategic choice of location and expansion plans
    The research centre in Basel was able to prevail over renowned locations in the USA, England, Israel and Singapore. By 2027, the BIIE will move into its own building in the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area in Allschwil, which is being designed by Herzog & de Meuron. For the time being, the institute is housed in the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at ETH Zurich in Basel. It is planned that a total of 300 employees, including scientists and support staff, will work at the institute.

    Priorities and international collaborations
    BIIE will focus on the development of computer tools and immune-based solutions. Together with the University of Oxford, the Basel-Oxford Centre of Immune Engineering will be established, which will include professorships and training programmes for students. This collaboration will advance basic and clinical research, particularly for children and adolescents in poorer countries.

    Leading personalities and administration
    Stephen Wilson, former Chief Operating Officer of the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, will serve as CEO of BIIE. Sai Reddy, Professor of Systems and Synthetic Immunology at ETH Zurich, will serve as Scientific Director. Georg Holländer, an expert in molecular developmental immunology with professorships at the University of Basel, ETH Zurich and the University of Oxford, will assume the position of Global Engagement Director.

    Significant upgrade for Basel as a research centre
    The establishment of the BIIE represents a significant upgrade for Basel as a research centre. The site complements existing research groups at the D-BSSE and the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel and strengthens the region, which is already home to over 40 biotech and pharmaceutical companies in the field of immunology.

    Huge benefit for the Basel region
    “The BIIE will bring together a critical mass of researchers who are all experts in different aspects of immune engineering. The combination of their strengths and perspectives should result in a sum that is greater than its parts,” explains Stephen Wilson. Conradin Cramer, President of the Government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, emphasises the importance of the institute for the region: “Basel as a strong economic region with a great philanthropic tradition will be further strengthened by the BIIE.”

    Christof Klöpper, CEO of Basel Area Business & Innovation, sees the BIIE as an enormous gain for the region: “Our life sciences location will not only be expanded by an important field of research, but will also strengthen its position on the global map of the most important research locations.”

    The generous donation from the Botnar Foundation and the collaboration with leading international institutions such as the University of Oxford and ETH Zurich position the Botnar Institute of Immune Engineering as a central institution in immune research. The new institute will further establish Basel as a top global centre for life sciences and enable significant advances in immune-based diagnostics and therapy.

    The planned expansion of the YOND Campus to include the YOND.02/03 buildings with a total usable area of around 31,000 m2 takes up the concept of YOND.01 and adapts it more specifically to the requirements of manufacturing companies. The focus is on providing robust and efficient buildings, flexibility through large, divisible areas and optimised logistics. These adaptations include efficient delivery, loading ramps, a logistics-friendly basement and advanced vertical access to the building. In addition, mezzanine floors made of wood enable flexible use of space that can be adapted to the individual needs of the companies.

    At the same time, the historic laboratory and workshop building at 203 Albisriederstrasse is being converted into a centre for small and creative businesses. The planned renovation and extension of one floor are aimed at preserving the history of the site and creating a workspace for the creative industries. The transformation of the boiler house into a vertical garden and the establishment of a bistro on the ground floor emphasise the ambition to create a campus that harmoniously combines quality of life and the world of work.

    The publicly accessible catering facilities along Albisriederstrasse and in the adjacent park will establish the site as an attractive location for businesses and visitors. The use of the ground floor will position the YOND Campus as a place for socialising and contribute to the activation of the space. This extension will create a forward-looking space that supports both the dynamic requirements of modern companies and the need for social interaction and creativity.

    The Innovaare Park, the largest innovation hub of its kind, was officially opened on 25 April 2024. Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and other prominent figures from politics, business and research, including Dieter Egli, Vice President of the Aargau cantonal government, and PSI Director Prof Dr Christian Rüegg, attended the ceremony. The park, which is already 80 per cent let, serves as a strategic hub and is the largest tenant of the neighbouring Paul Scherrer Institute.

    Dr Christian Brönnimann, CEO of Park Innovaare, emphasised the importance of this facility: “The official opening of Park Innovaare is the result of a collaborative effort by many stakeholders, including shareholders, the canton, the federal government, investors and PSI. This collaboration has created a pioneering meeting place for industry and cutting-edge research.”

    Thanks to its direct neighbourhood to the PSI and the use of its research infrastructure, the Innovaare Park offers ideal conditions for technology transfer from science to industry. It focuses on key technologies in the fields of photonics and quantum technologies, life sciences, advanced manufacturing technologies, energy and sustainability.

    Andreas Rickenbacher, President of Switzerland Innovation, explains the overarching vision: “Switzerland is recognised worldwide for its innovative strength. Park Innovaare plays a central role in optimally networking our academic institutions with the economy and thus translating research results into marketable products and services.”

    Park Innovaare has already met with a high level of acceptance: “We have attracted 21 companies so far, including 15 spin-offs from PSI, ETH or FHNW, two technology transfer centres and several large international companies”, says Robert Rudolph, CEO of Park Innovaare. With a current occupancy rate of around 80 per cent, the park is already showing its best side shortly after opening and is optimistic about the future.

    Das mehr als fünf Jahrzehnte alte Zentrum wird umfassend modernisiert, um den aktuellen und zukünftigen Herausforderungen gerecht zu werden. Das Projekt, das 2025 startet und bis 2027 abgeschlossen sein soll, zielt darauf ab, das Ausbildungszentrum Sempach zu einem führenden Kompetenzzentrum für den Bevölkerungsschutz auszubauen. Neben lokalen Zivilschutzorganisationen sollen künftig auch überregionale Feuerwehren und Polizeieinheiten von den verbesserten Bildungsmöglichkeiten profitieren.

    Diese Initiative ist ein zentrales Element in der Strategie des Kantons Luzern, die Ausbildungsinfrastruktur im Bevölkerungsschutz zu stärken und als Vorreiter in der Ausbildung von Rettungskräften zu agieren.

    IWB and Kiwigrid cooperate for decentralized energy supply

    The Basel Industrial Works ( IWB ) and the German IT company Kiwigrid , which specializes in decentralized energy and e-mobility, are working together to set up energy communities. Both companies have jointly developed software for energy management and asset management, IWB and Kiwigrid inform in a joint statement . It is to be used for the first time on the Westfeld site in Basel. There, the housing cooperative is realizing a new quarter with around 500 cooperative apartments.

    IWB will equip the district with an integrated heating, cooling and power supply. The Basel energy supplier obtains the necessary energy management from Kiwigrid. Using the Energy-IoT platform of the Dresden-based company, the district’s electricity meters, photovoltaic systems, charging stations and heat pumps can be integrated into a network for self-consumption, intelligently controlled and managed.

    “Our goal is a completely renewable, climate-friendly energy supply,” says Markus Balmer, Head of Sales and member of the management board at IWB. The company wants to contribute to the development of sustainable living and working spaces. “As an expert in energy management systems and IoT for renewable energies, Kiwigrid has proven to be the ideal partner in the implementation of our ambitious goals,” explains Balmer.

    The energy community in Westfeld should not remain the only joint project between IWB and Kiwigrid. According to the announcement, the partners have already found interested parties for further mergers. hs

    Kaqtu raises capital from real estate industry

    Kaqtu has successfully completed a first round of external investments, the young company from the Zurich Oberland announced in a press release. According to a corresponding report on startupticker.ch, business angels from the real estate industry are providing Kaqtu with a total of around half a million francs. Kaqtu intends to use the capital to further develop its digital interior design assistant.

    With this, interested parties can digitally search for furniture, decoration, colors and wallpaper for individual rooms or the entire apartment. The digital setup assistant is free to use, but Kaqtu offers a number of paid packages for more personal advice.

    The young company is pursuing the goal of “digitizing the entire furnishing process and thereby enabling individual and beautiful living in every household,” writes Kaqtu in the statement. However, the company does not want to achieve this on its own, but rather in cooperation with partner companies in the furnishing market. The establishment of a corresponding network is therefore to be tackled in the current year. In addition, Kaqtu wants to invest part of the newly raised capital in marketing.
