  • Energie 360° launches sustainable project for Zurich-Lengg and Zollikon

Energie 360° launches sustainable project for Zurich-Lengg and Zollikon

Energie 360° will start construction work on a new energy network on Monday, 17 April. According to a media release, the energy provider, together with the Lengg health cluster and the municipality of Zollikon, wants to heat and cool clinics and urban residential areas with climate-friendly Lake Zurich water from 2027. Zollikon still has to vote on whether to join the network.

Regarding the suitability of the planning area for such a solution, the press release states that several large health care institutions and residential areas are located close to each other in the Lengg district of Zurich. This is an ideal prerequisite for an energy network to heat and cool the clinics, institutes and flats in a climate-friendly way. The water is to be collected in Lake Zurich near Zollikon and piped to Lengg.

In addition to the health cluster and two urban residential areas with around 100 flats, the project will also be the starting signal for the construction of a district heating network in Zollikon, according to the energy company. It should then be possible to supply heating and cooling in Lengg and Zollikon for the first time from 2027. According to Energie 360°, the investment sum for the Lengg energy network is around 90 million Swiss francs.

The health cluster will be the largest hospital landscape in Europe to use climate-neutral energy, it continues. This would save up to 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year at the hospitals alone. This is equivalent to the exhaust gases from the use of about 4 million litres of fossil fuel oil.

Energie 360° has set itself the goal of supplying its customers exclusively with renewable energy by 2040.

  • Energie 360° starts construction of the Tiefenbrunnen energy network

Energie 360° starts construction of the Tiefenbrunnen energy network

The Zurich-based energy supplier Energie 360° will start building the Tiefenbrunnen energy network on July 25. According to a press release , by 2030, 5,300 residents in Tiefenbrunnen will be using renewable energy from Lake Zurich. Energie 360° is investing CHF 60 million in the new energy network.

From July, work on the construction of the lake water catchment and the underground energy center is to begin. The energy center is being built under the parking lot at the Zürichhorn. According to the information, the first lines of the heating network are to be laid in the coming year. From 2024, the first of a total of 400 properties will be connected to the new heat supply.

The Tiefenbrunnen network is an important building block on the way to becoming a climate-neutral city. Zurich aims to reach net zero by 2040. Heat from the lake represents a “climate-friendly, secure supply alternative” to heat from gas heating.

After completion of the energy network and the resulting replacement of fossil heating, Zurich will save 6,500 tons per year. That is as much CO2 as 290,000 trees could filter out of the air every year.

Energie 360° wants to shut down the gas network wherever climate-friendly heating solutions will be created in the next few years. Further energy networks using lake water are being developed for Zurich-Lengg, Zurich-Wollishofen and Thalwil.

“The City of Zurich is driving the transformation forward consistently and quickly together with its energy supply companies,” Silvia Banfi Frost, Energy Commissioner for the City of Zurich, is quoted as saying in the press release.

  • Wood-fired power plant in Frauenfeld has opened

Wood-fired power plant in Frauenfeld has opened

Bioenergie Frauenfeld AG has officially opened one of the largest wood-fired power plants in Europe in Frauenfeld. The company was founded by Energie 360° and Schweizer Zucker AG to implement this project. The plant’s four gas engines generate electricity for around 8,000 households and heat for the sugar factory and the Thurplus heating network from wood waste that would otherwise go unused. Its technology comes from the Tyrolean company Syncraft .

“The wood-fired power plant is a perfect example of how renewable energy is produced and used in a decentralized manner,” said Romeo Deplazes from Energie 360° in a press release from the Agricultural Information Service . “It’s the kind of project that is needed for the energy transition.”

In addition, Bioenergie Frauenfeld also uses the renewable raw material to produce biochar. Part of the CO2 stored in the wood is not released and is permanently removed from the atmosphere in the form of biochar. It is used, for example, in agriculture to improve the soil, as a feed additive or as activated carbon in water treatment.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the wood-fired power plant took place in February 2021. “What we have achieved in Frauenfeld in one year is unbelievable,” says project manager Stefan Ellenbroek. “Thanks to the excellent cooperation of all partners, we were able to keep to the very ambitious schedule and realize the light tower project.”

  • Energie 360° wants to supply only renewables from 2040 onwards

Energie 360° wants to supply only renewables from 2040 onwards

The Zurich energy supplier Energie 360° wants to supply only renewable energy from 2040 onwards. This is ten years earlier than previously aimed for. The reason for the faster phase-out of fossil fuels such as gas and oil is the Russian crisis, the company announced in a media release on the annual balance sheet.

According to this, the energy supplier delivered 15.9 percent more energy to end customers in the 2021 financial year than in the previous year. Of the 4978 gigawatt hours, 18.2 percent were of renewable origin. The company sees itself “on course”. By 2025, the share of renewables should increase to 30 percent.

With sales of CHF 537.1 million, Energie 360° generated a net profit of CHF 61.9 million. In the previous year, sales were CHF 466.2 million and net profit was CHF 71 million. The reason for the decline is lower investment income after the sale of two subsidiaries.

In view of the Russian crisis, Energie 360° recommends “customers who want to move away from Russian gas to replace their gas heating and switch to renewable energy sources”. As an alternative, the company promotes the energy networks in the city of Zurich, which make locally available renewable energy such as heat from Lake Zurich available. It names wood pellets as a further option and recommends increasing the proportion of biogas.

Energie 360° sees great potential in biogas and has increased its share in its standard gas product to 25 percent as of April 1, 2021. This saved around 200,000 tons of CO2 in the direct supply area. Energie 360° wants to build more biogas plants and invest in innovative research projects.

  • Builder and Energie 360° team up for district heating

Builder and Energie 360° team up for district heating

A community connection to the district heating system is currently being built in Wipkingen. Architect Lucas Schwarz provides the necessary space for this in his newly built apartment building. Energie 360° takes care of the rest, according to the Zurich energy supplier in a report on its website. According to this, the advantage of a local network is that not every property has to be connected individually to the district heating network. More than 60 percent of homeowners would have to get involved in order for it to be worthwhile to develop a neighborhood with district heating. The more heat is supplied, the cheaper it will be for everyone.

Schwarz is convinced that such a community connection will not only pay off ecologically but also financially in the long term: “I see the biggest advantages over heating in the small space requirement, the simple building services and the lower maintenance.” The energy verification is also simplified. In addition, the price of energy in thermal networks remains constant over the years. “That gives me more planning security and independence.” And last but not least, building owners received better financing conditions from banks thanks to certification in the canton’s building energy certificate.

It is about completing the transformation from fossil fuels to sustainable heating energies “as quickly as possible”, Schwarz is quoted as saying. He wishes “that the entire city of Zurich will be heated sustainably by 2050. In my opinion, the expansion of the district heating network is progressing too slowly.”
