Councillor Daniel Preisig gave an overview of Schaffhausen’s economic development in recent decades. After the industrial crisis and stagnation in the 1990s, Schaffhausen has recovered thanks to targeted economic development. in 2023, the population record of 1969 was reached again for the first time. Preisig emphasised how projects such as the conversion of the old steel foundry and the relocation of roads to create traffic-free promenades along the banks of the Rhine contributed to the city’s attractiveness. Schaffhausen is continuously investing in smart, future-orientated urban development and digital administration.

Dino Tamagni highlighted the impressive economic development of the canton of Schaffhausen. The region’s industrial success story began with the construction of the Moser Dam in the 19th century. The hydroelectric power plant, once the largest of its kind in Switzerland, laid the foundations for the establishment of important industrial pioneers such as Georg Fischer, SIG and IWC, which turned Schaffhausen into a central industrial centre.
In the 1990s, globalisation led to plant closures, job losses and emigration, resulting in the loss of 11% of jobs. However, targeted economic measures, such as the creation of an economic development agency, enabled Schaffhausen to overcome the challenges and regain its competitiveness.
Today, the canton has one of the strongest economies in Switzerland, with the highest GDP per capita. Thanks to the promotion of innovation projects and the continuous expansion of the infrastructure, Schaffhausen remains an attractive and future-orientated business location.

Andreas Campi, Head of Development, Halter AG, presented the “Im Pantli” residential project in the Waldquartier Schaffhausen. A modern residential neighbourhood is being built on the site, which was once used as a workers’ housing estate by Georg Fischer AG. The buildings are arranged around a neighbourhood centre to create urban alleyways and meeting spaces. The car-free development offers spacious, family-friendly flats with private outdoor areas. Childcare facilities and a dedicated bus stop enhance the quality of the location. The project not only promotes modern living, but also a lively community life.

Pascal Stutz, CEO of SVIT Zurich, Joëlle Zimmerli, Managing Director of Zimraum GmbH and Christian Brütsch, Owner and Managing Director of Stratcraft GmbH, presented solutions to the shortage of skilled labour. A key challenge facing the property sector is the shortage of skilled workers and dissatisfaction among experienced professionals. Around 60 % of the senior professionals surveyed feel that their workload is too high, and over 50 % see large portfolios as problematic. The study presented highlighted the need for action and suggested solutions such as the standardisation of processes, intelligent digitalisation and the promotion of leadership skills in order to better overcome the challenges.

Tindaro Milone presented a comparison of energy sources for heat pumps at the immoTable. EKZ operates over 1,200 energy systems across Switzerland and favours sustainable solutions. Air is cost-effective, but less powerful. Geothermal energy offers stable energy, but is expensive and location-dependent. Groundwater is efficient, but requires strict authorisations. Waste water provides a lot of energy, but is irregularly available. Seawater is particularly efficient, but expensive and tied to bodies of water. The choice of energy source depends on the project requirements, with EKZ offering customised solutions. We look forward to welcoming you to the next immoTable in Zug, where the focus will once again be on exciting topics and pioneering developments in the property sector. Join us as experts discuss the future of Zug as a property location and the latest innovations in the sector.

  • Urdorf municipal council approves framework for energy network

Urdorf municipal council approves framework for energy network

Energie 360° is planning an energy network in Urdorf based on CO2-free energy sources. The municipal council decided on the framework conditions for the implementation at its meeting on 26 February, as detailed in a press release. The energy network includes the suitability areas of Zentrum and Oberurdorf, as identified in the municipal energy plan. This is intended to support the desired transformation from fossil fuels to climate-friendly energy sources for heat production and thus the “net zero 2050” target.

The planned plant will produce heat using sustainable energy sources such as burning wood chips, thereby reducing the environmental impact by around 4,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. The existing natural gas network is to be replaced in the medium term on the basis of Energie 360°’s transformation strategy. The first connections are planned for autumn 2026, according to the press release.

The municipality of Urdorf’s involvement in the realisation of the planned district heating network is limited to the granting of a long-term building lease on part of the municipality’s own “Lätten” property for the construction of the necessary energy centre with an energy storage facility and permission to use public land. The realisation, financing and operation will be carried out entirely by Energie 360°, the statement continues. The municipality bears no entrepreneurial risk.

Any realisation of the energy centre on the municipality’s own land will be based on a building lease to be granted to Energie 360°. The municipal council has approved this contract for an initial term of 50 years in accordance with the authority regulations of the municipal ordinance and cantonal requirements.

  • Aarau as a future cleantech pioneer

Aarau as a future cleantech pioneer

On 18 March 2024, AEW Energie AG held a co-creation workshop in partnership with the city of Aarau and other key players, which served as a platform for the development of sustainable technologies. This initiative, which was carried out in close collaboration with the Aarau Economic Development Agency and the Hightech Zentrum Aargau as well as companies such as Jura Management AG and Swisscleantech, underlines the common goal of transforming Aarau into an innovative cleantech location. The workshop focussed on the promotion of technologies for CO2 reduction and the use of renewable energy sources.

The Mayor of Aarau, Dr Hanspeter Hilfiker, and Marc Ritter emphasised the importance of sustainable innovations and Aarau’s role as a pioneer in this area. The focus was on the development of cleantech solutions, particularly with regard to carbon capture and storage and the promotion of renewable energy sources. This approach reflects AEW’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and promoting sustainable practices that offer both economic and environmental benefits.

The workshop collaboration demonstrates the potential of collective efforts to solve complex sustainability challenges. The ideas generated will serve as a basis for future pilot projects that will further strengthen Aarau not only as an innovative but also as an attractive business location for companies and start-ups. This approach underlines the endeavour to promote cross-industry cooperation and develop innovative solutions for a sustainable future.

  • Kriens electricity suppliers realise heating network

Kriens electricity suppliers realise heating network

The two electricity suppliers to the town of Kriens, Energie Wasser Luzern(ewl) and Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke(CKW), are also becoming heating suppliers: according to a press release, the Kriens town council has decided in favour of the Kriens heating network consortium with ewl and CKW following a public tender for the construction and planning of a heating network.

The heating network will help to supply additional properties in Kriens, namely the Obernau, centre and Kupferhammer-Kehrhof areas, with thermal energy. According to the city council, this is in line with the goals of the city’s climate strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from buildings by 2045.

According to the information provided, the winning project assures Kriens a high level of territorial coverage and provides for transitional solutions that guarantee the population a high degree of planning security for the changeover in their heat supply. CKW and ewl are planning their project with a broad mix of different renewable energy sources, including regional wood. According to City Councillor Maurus Frey, this will create an attractive offer “so that together we can take a step towards our climate targets”.

In the upcoming construction work in Hergiswaldstrasse, the renovation work is to be carried out at the same time as the pipeline construction for the heating network, if possible. The city and ARGE intend to announce further details once the legally prescribed deadlines have expired.
