    Roche opens new centre for pharmaceutical research

    A significant milestone has been reached at Roche’s headquarters in Basel. The inauguration of the new Pharma Research and Early Development Centre (pRED). The centre, which offers 1,800 state-of-the-art workstations for laboratory and office work, brings together experts from various fields of research. The aim is to increase the efficiency of research and development through close collaboration. Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin also attended the opening ceremony, which emphasises the national importance of this project.

    With the new pRED Centre, Roche is pursuing a clear vision of pooling expertise from areas such as chemistry, biology and data science in order to drive forward pioneering innovations. Thomas Schinecker, CEO of the Roche Group, emphasised the central role of the centre in the company’s global innovation network. “This centre will not only improve the efficiency of our research, but also help us to achieve the greatest possible benefit for patients worldwide.”

    Investing billions in the future
    The investment in the pRED Centre is part of Roche’s long-term commitment to the Basel site. Since 2009, the company has invested 4.6 billion Swiss francs in the expansion of the site. With the new four buildings – including two high-rise laboratory buildings, an office complex and a congress centre – Roche is sending another strong signal for the future.

    And this is just the beginning: a further 1.2 billion Swiss francs are being invested in modernising and expanding the site, which will strengthen Basel’s role as a global centre for pharmaceutical research and development in the long term.

    With the opening of the new pRED Centre, Roche is not only investing in its own innovative strength, but also in strengthening Basel as a business location. This billion-euro investment is a clear signal that the pharmaceutical company intends to further expand its leading role in global research and development – a significant step both for the industry and for the region.

    The Innovaare Park, the largest innovation hub of its kind, was officially opened on 25 April 2024. Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and other prominent figures from politics, business and research, including Dieter Egli, Vice President of the Aargau cantonal government, and PSI Director Prof Dr Christian Rüegg, attended the ceremony. The park, which is already 80 per cent let, serves as a strategic hub and is the largest tenant of the neighbouring Paul Scherrer Institute.

    Dr Christian Brönnimann, CEO of Park Innovaare, emphasised the importance of this facility: “The official opening of Park Innovaare is the result of a collaborative effort by many stakeholders, including shareholders, the canton, the federal government, investors and PSI. This collaboration has created a pioneering meeting place for industry and cutting-edge research.”

    Thanks to its direct neighbourhood to the PSI and the use of its research infrastructure, the Innovaare Park offers ideal conditions for technology transfer from science to industry. It focuses on key technologies in the fields of photonics and quantum technologies, life sciences, advanced manufacturing technologies, energy and sustainability.

    Andreas Rickenbacher, President of Switzerland Innovation, explains the overarching vision: “Switzerland is recognised worldwide for its innovative strength. Park Innovaare plays a central role in optimally networking our academic institutions with the economy and thus translating research results into marketable products and services.”

    Park Innovaare has already met with a high level of acceptance: “We have attracted 21 companies so far, including 15 spin-offs from PSI, ETH or FHNW, two technology transfer centres and several large international companies”, says Robert Rudolph, CEO of Park Innovaare. With a current occupancy rate of around 80 per cent, the park is already showing its best side shortly after opening and is optimistic about the future.

    The overall contractor ERNE AG handed over the buildings of the Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare to the investor CPV/CAP Pensionskasse Coop and the operating company innovAARE AG on 20 December. Completion of the innovation park has therefore been completed on budget and on schedule, innovAARE AG announced in a press release. “The lighthouse project Park Innovaare is a joint project and confirms the commitment of all partners involved in the canton of Aargau to invest in the innovative strength and competitiveness of our companies,” Christian Brönnimann, Chairman of the Board of Directors of innovAARE AG, is quoted as saying in his speech at the opening.

    In his speech, Daniel Erne, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ERNE AG, explained that the realisation of cleanrooms and laboratories had brought with it practically every conceivable challenge. Danilo Zampieri from the CPV/CAP Coop pension fund drew attention to the building’s façade made of wood and solar panels.

    The first tenants temporarily housed at the neighbouring Paul Scherrer Institute(PSI) and other companies are due to move into the Innovation Park buildings as early as January 2024. The PSI will occupy around two thirds of the space. The remaining space will be allocated to companies specialising in photonics and quantum technology, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and semiconductor technology as well as energy and the environment. With an occupancy rate of 85 per cent already achieved, the innovation park is “making very good progress”, explains Brönnimann.

    KONE, the Finnish specialist for building mobility, has inaugurated a new branch for around 70 employees in Sion, according to a media release. It was officially opened in the presence of the Finnish ambassador to Switzerland, Valtteri Hirvonen. KONE has been present in Western Switzerland since 2001 and employs 140 people there.

    With the opening of its newest location, KONE is simultaneously introducing a new working model. Among other things, this includes a new computer-controlled allocation of workstations every day. Anyone who wants to fill a workstation submits a request via an app and is then assigned a place. This is done randomly and differently from the previous day.

    The company hopes that this will lead to stronger communication between employees, which should promote cooperation and creativity. In addition, the office building in Sion is reportedly KONE’s first in the world to be fully designed in the new brand identity. A dynamic and flexible space has been created that can be changed according to needs. This concept was developed with a team of local employees in a participatory process, it said.

    “We are proud to be able to introduce a form of collaboration at the Sion site that meets the requirements of digitalisation and globalisation and promotes inclusion and innovation in our Western Switzerland team,” Christian Wukovits, Managing Director KONE Switzerland and Austria, is quoted as saying in the statement, “I would like to express my sincere thanks to the project group and everyone else who was involved in this process.     Die Genossenschaft Urbane Dörfer mit Sitz in Bern lädt am Samstag, 26. August, ab 17 Uhr zur Eröffnungsfeier des Projekts Melchenbühl nach Muri-Gümligen ein. Dort, direkt bei der Tramhaltestelle Melchenbühl in Gümligen, eröffnet die Genossenschaft einen vielfältigen Begegnungsort. Es ist das zweite Pilotprojekt von Urbane Dörfer neben dem Urbanen Dorf Webergut in Zollikofen BE. Laut einem zu diesem Anlass herausgegebenen Flyer mit Einladung wird am 26. August zunächst ein Kreativort mit Kaffee und Bar, Coworking und Atelier eröffnet. Langfristig sollen 60 Wohneinheiten entstehen.

    Am 1. März 2023 hat Urbane Dörfer das Areal übernommen. Die ungenutzte Wiesenfläche, ein zweistöckiges Werkstatt- und Bürogebäude mit Innenhof und ein Zeithorizont von zwei bis drei Jahren schaffen Raum für Ideen aus der Bevölkerung, das Testen von zukünftigen Nutzungen des Urbanen Dorfes und für einen Begegnungsort, heisst es auf der Internetseite zum Projekt.

    Am neuen Kreativort wird es Benela’s Kaffee und Bar im Erdgeschoss geben. Im Obergeschoss sollen Atelier und Coworking Space einen schöpferischen Nährboden für Kreativschaffende und Selbstständige schaffen. Die Kreativwerkstatt diene als Workshop-Raum für kreative Projekte.

    Zur Zukunft des Pilotprojekts heisst es, langfristig entstehe auf dem Areal ein vielfältiger Wohn-, Arbeits- und Kreativort und eine Basis für gelebte Nachbarschaft. Geplant sind 60 Wohneinheiten, gemeinschaftlich genutzte Flächen und öffentliche Gewerbeflächen. Das partizipative Wohnprojekt sei „eine Keimzelle für ein nachhaltiges urbanes Leben“.

    Dann folgt noch der Hinweis, dass der Anlass bei jedem Wetter stattfinde und eine Anmeldung nicht erforderlich sei.

    Schlieren-based Integral design-build AG opened a branch office in Lausanne on Tuesday, 2 May. According to a media release, the office in French-speaking Switzerland will operate under the name Integral design-build SA. The head of the new branch is Régis Cornaz, who will set up the branch together with Aurélie Bischoff as assistant project manager. Both were most recently employed at the real estate management company Steiner SA.

    Integral is part of the Halter Group. The construction and real estate group Halter AG has its headquarters at JED in Schlieren. The new working landscape of Halter AG and its sister companies at the move to JED was realised by Integral design-build.

    In addition to the design of working environments, the company also offers a general range of services for interior design. This ranges from workspace management and design to turnkey handover. Integral takes over all phases of the development, planning and realisation of working environments, the company says. With the maximum use of digital processes and 3D tools, the new working environments are visualised and a smooth planning and construction process is ensured.

    The company was founded in 2016 as W21 Innenausbau AG by Peter Pfiffner – owner of Pfiffner AG in Altstetten ZH – and Michael Peter. Today, as a sister company of Halter AG, Integral has employees in the areas of architecture, design and execution. According to the company, it manages projects throughout Switzerland.

    IKEA Switzerland, based in Spreitenbach, is building its first store in the canton of Valais. Construction began in Riddes with the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, 10 March. This will be the first time IKEA has entered the Swiss mountain region with a large shop, according to a media release. When it opens in 2024, IKEA will have ten stores and two planning studios in Switzerland with around 3,300 employees.

    The construction coincides with the 50th anniversary of IKEA Switzerland. iKEA opened its first store outside Scandinavia in Spreitenbach in 1973. “I am very pleased that after an intensive development and planning phase, we can now begin to implement this milestone,” Jessica Anderen, CEO and Chief Sales Officer (CSO) of IKEA Switzerland, is quoted as saying. “Our stores are and will remain an important pillar in IKEA’s growth strategy. With Riddes, we are opening up a new market in Switzerland outside the cities,” Anderen said.

    The share of online furniture sales at IKEA has tripled in recent years from 8 to 24 per cent, the statement said. Nevertheless, the on-site shopping experience still plays a decisive role in furniture purchases and the demand for personal furnishing advice has even increased in recent years. The furniture store in Riddes will be designed accordingly.

    The opening of the tenth IKEA store in Switzerland is planned for spring 2024. The new IKEA location will not only benefit future customers, but also the entire canton, according to the company’s statement. IKEA will create 150 to 200 new jobs in the region. The recruitment phase will begin in the summer of 2023.

    The design of the building in Altstetten was developed and planned by Theo Hotz Partner Architekten. Although Theo Hotz (1928-2018) was considered one of the best-known high-tech architects in Switzerland during his lifetime, the Manufactory 8048 was designed as a "low-tech" building: the building technology and the standard of construction are minimal, the structural details are simple. The clear design language of the building results from a simple cubic outline with six floors. These can be recognized from the outside by continuous glazed ribbon windows and horizontal aluminum parapets. In the building, industrial

    In the center of the building is an airy atrium, which serves as an open inner courtyard for access and becomes an attraction, meeting point and relaxation area.     In Wädenswil and Winterthur, two more industrial parks will be built in the coming years based on the Manufakt concept. An important element is the networking of the various tenants across the locations.

    The new Werkarena business park in Basel celebrated topping-out on Friday. After construction began in autumn 2019, Steiner AG was able to complete the shell of the building complex, according to a media release.

    The first tenants should be able to move in from autumn. The Werkarena is designed for different types of companies. The lower floors offer a ramp system for small vans especially for the storage and logistics industry. Tenants can also use the existing office, meeting and conference rooms jointly.

    The upper floors offer a marketplace, a forum and rooms for new business models. They are primarily intended to address startups and small and medium-sized companies that are expanding their network and looking for a place for inspiration and exchange. The trade association Basel-Stadt and the Business Parc Reinach operate part of the commercial and business park, which particularly want to promote start-ups.

    The Werkarena is being built near the border with Germany, the A3 motorway and the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse airport.
