    Presence Switzerland is satisfied with the presentation at the Expo

    At the end of March, the world exhibition in Dubai came to an end after six months. According to a press release , Presence Switzerland is satisfied with Switzerland’s performance. As a unit of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Presence Switzerland was responsible for running the Swiss pavilion during the Expo.

    According to Presence Switzerland, the Swiss Pavilion received a total of 1.7 million visitors. Among them were people from around 100 different nationalities. This made the Swiss Pavilion one of the most popular and most visited pavilions at the Expo.

    The Swiss Pavilion also served as a platform for exchange with trading partners. More than 50 companies and 20 institutional partners and universities have used it for this purpose. In addition, 987 official delegations visited the pavilion, including 90 prime ministers, ministers and governors from different countries.

    A survey showed that the majority had a good or very good impression of the Swiss presence. The pavilion has also had a positive impact on how Switzerland is perceived in areas such as innovation, tourism, sustainability and Swiss products.

    The Swiss pavilion also received three prizes: the World Expo Award from Exhibitor magazine as the best medium-sized pavilion, the 2A Certificate & Veneration and Innovative Achievement Memorial Icon from 2A magazine and an award for architecture and landscape from the Committee of Experts of the Bureau International des Expositions ( BIE ).

    On March 21 at the Expo in Dubai , the Swiss pavilion brought together experts from universities in Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates, private companies and public actors under the motto “Smart Connected Cities”. It is about intelligent solutions for the management of water, mobility and other challenges in cities that are becoming increasingly dense. Some of these projects have already been implemented in Switzerland and could be imitated in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region.

    The event was organized by the University of Applied Sciences in Western Switzerland ( HES-SO ). It is the Leading House MENA officially commissioned by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation . Its goal is to promote scientific cooperation between Switzerland and the countries of the MENA region.

    During implementation, the HES-SO worked together with Swissnex , the Swiss Embassy in the UAE and the Swiss Business Hub Middle East . “International cross-technology cooperation that offers networked solutions for the exponentially growing demand of a growing population and the associated densification of living spaces are the only way to master the challenges,” says Dante Larini, project manager of Swissnex in the Swiss pavilion, in a press release quoted. “The event showed us how much and how seamlessly technology can transform the way cities are managed and the daily lives of their residents.”

    Josef Spillner from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences ( ZHAW ) gave a keynote speech on the opportunities and risks of cyber-physical spaces. The cooperation between the ZHAW and the private university of the Emirate of Sharjah ( Sharjah University ) was also presented at the event.

    The world exhibition, which is actually planned for 2020, begins in Dubai on October 1st. Nüssli is building ten of the total of 200 country pavilions for the Expo, according to a press release by the event builder from the St.GallenBodenseeArea. Despite strict compliance with the health measures, all work is on track, so that the pavilions of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Austria, Belarus, China, Japan, Kazakhstan and Monaco will be ready on time.

    The pavilions of France and Japan attracted particular attention. The trade journal “Architectural Digest” recently presented the eight pavilions that will be architecturally the most important at the Expo. With France and Japan, this also includes two of the pavilions built by Nüssli. The event organizer is implementing the motto Pavilion of Light for France and is focusing on sustainability and the connection between Japan and the Middle East for Japan.

Now, within this framework, they also want to jointly develop models for future cooperation between intelligent cities, according to a media release from the canton of Basel-Stadt. Its cantonal and urban development in the presidential department is taking the lead in a first pilot project of the initiative.

    With “Smart Inter-City – our common path into the future”, the participants not only want to develop models of cooperation between so-called Smart Cities, but also to implement them. By networking the seven cities, existing synergies are to be used. The project is also open to partners from business, science and the general public.

    The pilot project is to be promoted at the respective innovation locations of the participating cities. In Basel, for example, this includes the Smart City Lab Basel , which was launched by the canton and the SBB.
