Basel invests in sustainable heating infrastructure

IWB and the Department of Construction and Transport of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are starting the construction of a new district heating pipeline in the Bachletten neighbourhood. Construction work is due to begin on 3 February, the two partners announced in a joint press release. The work is divided into five stages, running from Paulusgasse via Arnold-Böcklin-Strasse and Therwilerstrasse to Rütimeyerplatz.

As part of the installation of the new heating pipeline, the canton also wants to renew the electricity and water pipes in the affected streets. There are also plans to “partially green and unseal the road surface”, according to the press release. To this end, trees are to be planted in small hollows and car parks are to be laid out with grass paving stones so that water can seep into the ground. However, the redesign of the surface is currently still dependent on the outcome of pending objections.

IWB will also be laying district heating pipes and renewing the service lines in other streets in the Bachletten neighbourhood by 2031. Work is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year in the Kluserstrasse, Marschalkenstrasse and Bernerring perimeters.

Further development of the district heating pipeline between Constance and Kreuzlingen

In summer 2022, Energie Kreuzlingen, KVA Thurgau and Stadtwerke Kon stanz announced their plans to build a cross-border district heating pipeline. The project is now entering the next phase, Stadtwerke Konstanz announced in a press release. The three partners have agreed to define the key points of the project and to draw up a preliminary project. The realisation decision will then be made on this basis.

The planned district heating pipeline will run from the future waste incineration plant in Weinfelden to Kreuzlingen and on to Constance. In a memorandum of understanding, the partners have defined the roles and distribution of tasks in the planning process. KVA Thurgau will then take over the financing and realisation of the work required for the project planning. Energie Kreuzlingen and Stadtwerke Konstanz will contribute the technical and planning fundamentals.

KVA Thurgau is to update the feasibility study already carried out on the basis of the specified technical and operational parameters and initiate the planning of the route. At the same time, the partners want to hold talks with potential partners for financing the project. In a second stage, the basis for obtaining a realisation credit is to be developed. According to current planning, the replacement waste incineration plant could supply its first heat by the end of 2031. The district heating pipeline should also be in place by this time if possible.

Heat concept from waste incineration and heat from the lake is being examined

According to a press release , the energy supply companies Energie Kreuzlingen , Stadtwerke Konstanz , the KVA Thurgau association from Weinfelden TG and EKT AG from Arbon TG want to join forces in order to use new heat sources more optimally in a cross-border alliance.

A heat supply concept is being considered in which the use of CO2-neutral waste heat from the waste incineration plant of the KVA via district heating line and seawater heat from the Constance funnel are combined.

The four partners called in Swisspower AG to examine the feasibility of the project from a technical, economic, legal and organizational point of view. A result is expected in the course of the year.

Swisspower supports municipal utilities and energy suppliers with cooperation initiatives, consulting services and networking offers on the way to energy systems without CO2 emissions.
