    A new research centre strengthens the Basel site.

    Roche is embarking on the construction of a new 15-storey research and development centre at its headquarters in Basel. The foundation stone for the centre, which is specifically designed for the early phases of drug development, was laid on 29 October, the global pharmaceutical company announced in a press release. In Building 12, which will cost around 500 million Swiss francs, Roche intends to consolidate functions of the research and development department that are currently spread across the site. Work on the 72-metre-high building is due to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2029.

    “Building 12 is an essential part of our long-term vision for the Basel site,” said Jürg Erismann, Site Head Roche Basel/Kaiseraugst, in the press release. “The investment of 500 million Swiss francs is a clear commitment to Basel and underlines Roche’s long-term commitment to the research location and to Switzerland.” According to the press release, Roche has invested around 8 billion francs in its Swiss sites since 2015. A further 33 billion francs have been invested in research and development in Switzerland.

    New major orders for building construction projects in Berne and Zurich

    “Implenia has won further large and challenging building construction contracts,” the construction and property company from Opfikon announced in a press release. The order volume is estimated at over CHF 400 million in total. The two largest projects are a new building for the University of Bern and a residential development in the Zurich Oberland.

    The Canton of Bern has commissioned Implenia with the master builder work for a new medical research and training centre for the University of Bern. The university plans to unite five institutes of its medical faculty here. Construction work is due to start in May 2026 and be completed in July 2028.

    In Oetwil am See in the Zurich Oberland, Implenia will act as total contractor for the Seraina Investment Foundation to realise the new Schachenweid development. Eight flat blocks with 90 condominiums are planned here. Construction work is scheduled to start in September 2025 and the apartments should be ready for occupancy in October 2027.

    In the press release, Implenia also lists the modernisation and conversion of an inner-city building, the conversion of an old factory site in western Switzerland into an urban quarter and two new construction projects for school buildings in Switzerland and Germany as further new orders. The new projects “are in line with Implenia’s strategy of focusing on specialised real estate, which requires extensive expertise and many years of experience,” writes Implenia.

    The 2023 edition of Fribourg Network Fribourg was presented at a panel discussion organised by the WIF in the bluefactory innovation quarter. In the presence of Jacques Boschung, President of Bluefactory Fribourg-Fribourg SA, and Remo Daguati, President of the Swiss Association for Site Management (SVSM), representatives of the Smart Living Lab research and development centre, the companies JPF Holding SA and Lutz Architectes, and the founder of Mobbot shared their experiences and discussed trends, innovation opportunities and challenges in the construction sector.

    Basel gets a new research center

    The R2-D2 project by Guerra Clauss Garin Architekten from Basel has won the tender for a new office building on the corner of Schanzenstrasse and Spitalstrasse in Basel. The Botnar Research Center for Child Health ( BRCCH ) of the University of Basel and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich ( ETH ) will move in there, according to a press release .

    The BRCCH will be located in the immediate vicinity of the Basel University Hospital, the Basel Children's University Hospital and the Schällemätteli Life Sciences Campus. It is intended to expand the pediatric and adolescent medicine cluster and "develop into the leading application-oriented research institute for child and adolescent health" over the next few years. The canton of Basel-Stadt is building the building on its own.

    The project competition was won unanimously by Guerra Clauss Garin Architects. They are now revising their designs for the low-emission and sustainable research building based on the jury's recommendations. The preliminary project will then be created with detailed information on costs, deadlines and standards, according to the press release.

    Interested parties can view the competition entries from January 14th to 25th, 2022 at Uferstrasse 90.
