Business award recognises industrial expertise and regional roots in Thurgau

GLATZ AG from Frauenfeld has secured the Thurgau Business Award 2026, which is presented annually by the Thurgau Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Thurgau Trade Association, the Thurgau Cantonal Bank and the Department of Home Affairs and Economic Affairs.

According to a press release, the family business impressed the jury with its combination of cross-generational business activities, international competitiveness and regional loyalty. With its patented sunshade frames, a high level of vertical integration, an in-house sewing workshop and uncompromising quality standards, GLATZ AG is a trendsetter in shade solutions – at a time when the international low-cost market is squeezing out many competitors. The large sunshades from Frauenfeld, which can withstand wind speeds of up to 115 kilometres per hour, are exported from Thurgau to over 50 countries.

“The company has been firmly rooted in Thurgau for over 130 years – and at the same time carries the quality and innovative spirit of Thurgau as a centre of industry out into the world,” says Thomas Koller, jury president of the Thurgau Business Award.

The move to the new headquarters on Langfeldstrasse in Frauenfeld in 2024 shows that GLATZ AG will remain rooted in Thurgau in the future. The new building, which combines research and development, production, administration and a modern training centre under one roof, was also built with a focus on sustainability. Photovoltaic systems, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems and shorter transport routes reduce the CO2 footprint.

The award ceremony will take place on 15 April 2026 at GLATZ AG in Frauenfeld.

Wood-fired power plant in Frauenfeld has opened

Bioenergie Frauenfeld AG has officially opened one of the largest wood-fired power plants in Europe in Frauenfeld. The company was founded by Energie 360° and Schweizer Zucker AG to implement this project. The plant’s four gas engines generate electricity for around 8,000 households and heat for the sugar factory and the Thurplus heating network from wood waste that would otherwise go unused. Its technology comes from the Tyrolean company Syncraft .

“The wood-fired power plant is a perfect example of how renewable energy is produced and used in a decentralized manner,” said Romeo Deplazes from Energie 360° in a press release from the Agricultural Information Service . “It’s the kind of project that is needed for the energy transition.”

In addition, Bioenergie Frauenfeld also uses the renewable raw material to produce biochar. Part of the CO2 stored in the wood is not released and is permanently removed from the atmosphere in the form of biochar. It is used, for example, in agriculture to improve the soil, as a feed additive or as activated carbon in water treatment.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the wood-fired power plant took place in February 2021. “What we have achieved in Frauenfeld in one year is unbelievable,” says project manager Stefan Ellenbroek. “Thanks to the excellent cooperation of all partners, we were able to keep to the very ambitious schedule and realize the light tower project.”

Baumer is building in Frauenfeld for 20 million francs

Baumer will add a development center to its Frauenfeld site. The company is investing 20 million francs in its new Innovation Center. It will offer space for around 120 employees on 5,000 square meters. According to a press release , the teams should move in in late summer 2023.

Baumer is investing in its innovative strength for the second time in just a few years, following the opening of the new high-tech center in Stockach in southern Germany in 2018. The central location between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , the University of Excellence in Konstanz and the OST – Ostschweizer Fachhochschule is “optimal”. “The new building enables us to expand the development capacities at the headquarters in order to expand our position as a driver of innovation,” says Dr. Oliver Vietze quoted, CEO of the company from the St.GallenBodenseeArea.

When it comes to sustainability and energy efficiency, the Innovation Center is set to become a showcase project. A complete solar building envelope is planned for power generation. Geothermal probes and a heat pump are to temper the building. Baumer will obtain further CO2-neutral electricity from Swiss hydropower.

    Frauenfeld gets wood power plant

The energy and mobility service provider Energie 360 ° from Zurich and the Swiss company Zucker AG are jointly building a wood-fired thermal power station in Frauenfeld. From June 2022, it will supply electricity for around 8,000 households as well as heat for the sugar factory and the Frauenfeld West heating network. For this purpose, the two companies will found Bioenergie Frauenfeld AG. In a press release of the same name, they emphasize that this wood-fired thermal power station is "climate-positive".

Wood gas is obtained from wood in a thermochemical process. This gas drives engines that produce renewable electricity from it. This thermochemical process produces recyclable biochar. This means that around 9,000 tons of CO2 stored in the wood would not be released each year, but instead permanently withdrawn from the atmosphere.

The heart of the power plant will be supplied and installed by the Tyrolean company Syncraft. According to the press release, their proprietary and patented technology is one of the most efficient in the industry.

"On the one hand, our company wants to diversify," says Guido Stäger, CEO of Schweizer Zucker AG, "on the other hand, we are making our production processes more sustainable. From 2022, the wood-fired power station will contribute to both goals. "
