  • Renewables hold a high share of electricity and heat

Renewables hold a high share of electricity and heat

The conversion of the Swiss energy supply to renewable sources is only making slow progress. This is shown by the seventh benchmark study by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy(SFOE), in which 111 energy suppliers from all over Switzerland took part this time.

According to the study, the share of renewables has stagnated compared to the sixth study in 2021/22 for the participating suppliers at just over 80 per cent for electricity, slightly below that for heat and just under 10 per cent for gas. Four suppliers have already met the targets for electricity with over 90 per cent, including Energie Wasser Bern(ewb) and Services Industriels de Genève with 95 per cent and Eniwa in Aarau and EWZ in Zurich with 94 per cent. In the heat sector, EWZ is ahead with 95 per cent and Energie Uster and Eniwa with 92 per cent target fulfilment each. In the gas supply sector, only ewb with 88 per cent and Technische Betriebe Glarus with 84 per cent are above 80 per cent target fulfilment.

Digitalisation is a major challenge for small suppliers in particular. A quarter of them do not even have a strategy for this. Just under half have a strategy, but no specific targets.

Energy efficiency measures are also lagging behind. Only 45 per cent of the participating electricity suppliers already have a strategy with quantified targets.

According to a BfE press release on the study, the benchmarking itself has contributed to knowledge transfer in the sector with webinars, events and information material.

  • New projects for decarbonisation of the gas industry to start in 2025

New projects for decarbonisation of the gas industry to start in 2025

EPFL and the French-speaking Swiss gas supplier Gaznat have signed a framework agreement to expand their collaboration, according to a press release. This provides for three calls for tenders for research and development projects that can make a significant contribution to a clean gas supply. The first call is scheduled for early 2025.

The winning projects will be selected by a scientific advisory board consisting of four representatives from both sides. These include Gaznat CEO Gilles Verdan, Wendy Lee Queen and Yasmine Calisesi from the EPFL Energy Centre and EPFL Vice President Edouard Bugnion. A programme manager will coordinate the tenders and support the selected projects.

EPFL and Gaznat have already jointly financed 17 projects in three calls for proposals. Gaznat opened its innovation lab in Aigle in 2023.

Gaznat, based in Lausanne, procures and transports gas for partner companies in western Switzerland. The company aims to make its supply climate-neutral by 2050. “Thanks to our research and development collaboration with EPFL, we are getting closer to our goal of climate neutrality and can decarbonise our industry,” Gaznat Chairman of the Board of Directors René Bautz and CEO Gilles Verdan are quoted as saying in the press release.

  • Biogas production attracts interest in Laufental-Thierstein

Biogas production attracts interest in Laufental-Thierstein

Erdgas AG Laufenstein-Thierstein(GASAG), based in Münchenstein, is clarifying where a biogas plant can be built in the region and how it can be financed. The plant would have to be located near a gas pipeline, for example at the Müsch gas station in Laufen, it writes in a letter to farmers in the region. For building law reasons, farmers would have to own the biogas and processing plant. GASAG would guarantee the purchase of the biogas.

The regional gas supplier based in Münchenstein has had a potential survey carried out in recent months. According to a press release, BOHA AG, which it commissioned, asked 38 farmers in the region whether they would be prepared to supply slurry and manure and accept the residual materials. 23 farmers with a maximum total of 2000 livestock units declared their willingness to participate. This corresponds to a potential of 7 to 8 gigawatt hours. This could cover 20 per cent of GASAG’s consumption.

Founded in 1993, GASAG is owned by Primeo Wärmeholding AG, the municipalities of Breitenbach, Büsserach, Dittingen, Meltingen and Zwingen and the town of Laufen. The business is managed by Primeo Energie.
