Successful spatial development in the canton of Neuchâtel

The latest data shows that the canton of Neuchâtel has experienced positive development in various areas of spatial planning. Population growth has stabilised and the number of jobs has risen steadily, indicating robust economic strength. The active involvement of the municipalities in revising their development plans to meet the requirements of the Federal Spatial Planning Act and the cantonal master plan is particularly noteworthy. By the end of 2023, 16 out of 27 municipalities had already submitted their revision files, a step that underlines the consistent adaptation to the prescribed density requirements and the reduction of underutilised building zones.

One notable aspect of the report is the progressive densification of economic zones, which leads to a more efficient use of available land without compromising the quality of life. Exemplary neighbourhoods illustrate the potential to combine densification with a high quality of life. The availability and quality of public transport has also improved, which supports the canton’s Mobility Strategy 2030. The introduction of new parking regulations and the promotion of soft mobility are further steps towards reducing private transport and promoting more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

These developments are particularly important for property experts, as they influence the framework conditions for investments and the development of new projects. Strategic densification and the promotion of sustainable mobility concepts offer new opportunities for the development of future-oriented property projects. In addition, measures to protect agricultural land and reduce energy consumption contribute to more sustainable development, which can increase the value of property in the long term.

In conclusion, the report notes that despite the encouraging developments, challenges remain, particularly with regard to the ageing population and the need to develop adapted forms of housing. The ongoing revision of local development plans and the focus on sustainable neighbourhoods and high-quality public spaces will be key issues in future spatial planning. For property management professionals, this report provides a sound basis for strategic decision-making and underlines the importance of forward-looking planning in the dynamic landscape of the property market.

  • Birsstadt honoured with the Wakker Prize

Birsstadt honoured with the Wakker Prize

The Swiss Heritage Society is awarding this year’s Wakker Prize to the Birsstadt association. It honours the cooperation between nine municipalities in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and the Solothurn municipality of Dornach in solving the challenges in the agglomeration. This cooperation lays the foundation for repairing the uncoordinated growth of the area at the gates of the Basel metropolis.

In its press release, Heimatschutz praises in particular the upgrading of the natural and living space along the Birs, the careful further development of important industrial sites and the safeguarding and strengthening of the architectural heritage. However, Birsstadt also addresses overarching strategies in the areas of landscape, settlement, mobility and adaptation to climate change.

The Birsstadt association was founded in 2018. In addition to Dornach, it includes the municipalities of Aesch, Arlesheim, Birsfelden, Duggingen, Grellingen, Muttenz, Münchenstein, Pfeffingen and Reinach. Together, the ten municipalities have a population of around 94,000. The association sees great opportunities in being honoured by the Heritage Society. It wants to use this opportunity to make the Birsstadt better known throughout Switzerland, it writes in its own press release. It also intends to launch a project this year on dealing with building culture in the region.

The award will be presented on 22 June as part of a Wakker Prize celebration on the Domplatz in Arlesheim.

    Palanggenbach power plant celebrates opening

The inauguration ceremony for the Palanggenbach power plant took place on 3 June. This means that the latest hydroelectric power plant in Uri is now officially open, around six months after commissioning, completed tests and some optimisation work, informs EWA-energieUri in a statement. The energy service provider realised the Palanggenbach power plant together with aventron AG, Korporation Uri and the municipality of Seedorf.

“We can be proud of what we have realised with the Palanggenbach power plant,” Werner Jauch, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kraftwerk Palanggenbach AG, is quoted in the statement from his speech at the inauguration. “With its annual production of 11.5 gigawatt hours of electricity, the Palanggenbach power plant will contribute to the security of supply in the future, and it will do so in a CO2-free, sustainable and renewable manner.” In addition, Jauch pointed out that over 85 per cent, or about 18 million Swiss francs, of the investment in the project benefited the canton of Uri in the form of contracts. Even during operation, the power plant generates “considerable contributions to the corporation of Uri, the canton of Uri and the municipality of Seedorf”.

For the official inauguration, the doors of the power plant were open to the interested public. There was an exclusive opportunity to explore the 1.3-kilometre-long tunnel down to the water intake. The power station control centre and turbine were also open to the public.
