New headquarters strengthens the future of the hydropower company in Kriens

ANDRITZ Hydro is moving to a new headquarters, but will remain based in Kriens. According to a press release, research and development, sales, project management and administration with around 130 employees will move to the Schappe Centre near the reconstructed premises of the former Bell Maschinenfabrik. A new neighbourhood will be built on the site of the predecessor company.

By moving to the modern company centre, ANDRITZ Hydro wants to secure its options for further growth, according to the press release. The relocation of the company management to the Schappe Centre should be completed by the end of 2026. The company already announced in spring that it plans to relocate its service workshop from the centre in Kriens to the industrial area of Buchrain in the north of Lucerne, around 10 kilometres away, by 2028. The company offers services such as electromechanical equipment and services for hydropower plants worldwide for new and existing hydropower plants, from small hydropower plants to large-scale plants.

“This is a good solution for us,” says site manager Claudio Nold. “We can continue to work and grow under optimal conditions.” Logis Suisse, the landowner of the Bell site, also sees the relocation of the ANDRITZ Hydro headquarters as a benefit in terms of developing the former industrial site into a new urban neighbourhood, according to the press release.

  • Energy supplier plans move to former bank premises

Energy supplier plans move to former bank premises

AEW will not be relocating its new headquarters to the Obere Vorstadt site as previously planned. According to the energy supplier, the test planning launched in May 2024 showed that the possible site development was not sufficiently in line with AEW’s development goals.

The search for a new location had become necessary because the current headquarters at Industriestrasse 20 in the Aeschbachquartier in Aarau does not fulfil AEW’s short to medium-term capacity and space requirements. For this reason, the rental contract, which expires in mid-2027, will not be extended.

AEW has now found a suitable neighbourhood at Bahnhofstrasse 49: the premises of the former Credit Suisse. According to the information provided, they offer the space that AEW needs in the long term.

As the Canton of Aargau is currently renting “significant space” in the Obere Vorstadt area for the High Court and judicial management, AEW intends to “initially” enter into negotiations with the canton regarding the sale of the entire Obere Vorstadt area. The move to Bahnhofstrasse is planned for 2027.

  • Expansion of the headquarters to start this year

Expansion of the headquarters to start this year

CSS is planning to start construction work on the extension of its headquarters on Tribschenstrasse in Lucerne in the fourth quarter of this year. The building application will be submitted at the beginning of April, the Lucerne-based health, accident and property insurer is quoted as saying in a report in the Luzerner Zeitung newspaper. The new building and renovation of the commercial building acquired by CSS in 2015 should be completed by the end of 2027.

CSS intends to use almost all of the space in the new building and the commercial building for its own needs. A bistro is only planned on the ground floor of the commercial building. The amount of the construction costs is not being communicated by CSS, at least not at the moment.

The concept for the extension of the CSS headquarters is based on a design by Diener und Diener Architekten. The Basel-based architectural firm won a competition organised by CSS against nine competitors. The winning Lambris design envisages that the commercial building, which is classified as worthy of protection, will be enclosed by the extension.

New building at headquarters in Weggis officially opened

Thermoplan inaugurated its new building at its headquarters in Weggis on 22 June after almost 960 days of construction, the globally active Lucerne-based manufacturer of fully automatic coffee machines announced in a press release. The red ribbon in front of the spacious entrance area of the modern production and office building was cut by Thermoplan CEO Adrian Steiner together with the founding couple Esther and Domenic Steiner. Over the course of the entire open day, almost 5,000 visitors gathered on the festive mile along Weiherstrasse.

Thermoplan develops and produces fully automatic coffee machines for professional use in catering and other businesses. Among other things, Thermoplan equips the global Starbucks chain with fully automatic coffee machines. The globally active company is committed to Switzerland as a production location: the fully automatic coffee machines are all manufactured at the headquarters in Weggis, Thermoplan states in its self-promotion. Around 80 per cent of the components used also come from Swiss production.

CSS expands headquarters with Diener und Diener Architekten

The jury of an architectural competition organised by the CSS Group has unanimously decided in favour of the design by Diener und Diener Architekten. According to a press release, the Basel-based architecture firm has been commissioned to expand the CSS headquarters of the health, accident and property insurer in the city of Lucerne. A commercial building on Tribschenstrasse, which CSS purchased in 2015, is to be integrated into the project.

A total of ten designs were submitted. “Lambris”, says CSS CEO Philomena Colatrella, “embodies urban elegance and best fulfils the architectural, heritage and functional requirements”.

Originally, CSS had wanted to demolish the commercial building designed by Lucerne architect Carl Mossdorf. However, together with conservation and planning organisations, it finally agreed to preserve it. Now it is to be restored to as original a state as possible.

In the design by Diener und Diener Architekten called Lambris, the historic building is enclosed by the new building. According to CSS, the winning project connects the different streets and squares and thus blends seamlessly into the cityscape. A bistro open to the public is to be created on the ground floor.

The building application for the “urgently needed” office building is due to be submitted in the fourth quarter of this year. Provided no appeals are lodged against the building permit, the new building is scheduled to be occupied in the first half of 2027.

Megasol commissions its own solar roofs on its car park

Megasol has converted its parking spaces at the headquarters in Deitingen into a solar carport with 22 charging stations. “We developed it around our proven Nicer X solar roof,” Daniel Sägesser, member of the executive board of Megasol Energie AG, is quoted as saying in a corresponding press release from the internationally active Solothurn-based solar manufacturer. With the Nicer X quick mounting system, the solar modules are snapped into vertically running profiles. The solar roof can be mounted on steel or wooden structures and protects against rain, hail and snow even at low inclinations.

Megasol has given the name Wingport to its solar car park set up at its own headquarters. Mojen Solar GmbH also wants to sell the system with the characteristic outriggers, which is intended for large car parks. “No one has offered us such a well-designed complete system before,” Frank Helmcke, managing director of the German solar company, is quoted as saying in the statement. “Since solar car park roofing is mandatory in many parts of Germany and also France, enquiries have been increasing very strongly for some time.” Here Mojen Solar wants to offer solutions in cooperation with Megasol. In addition to Nicer X, the Solothurn-based solar manufacturer provides all the detailed plans for the overall construction. For their implementation, Mojen Solar works together with other suppliers for the foundation and steel construction.

  • Green steel makes Forster Campus particularly sustainable

Green steel makes Forster Campus particularly sustainable

Forster Profilsysteme is having a new company headquarters built in Romanshorn. There, activities and employees of the two previous locations in Arbon TG are to be combined. The new Forster Campus, covering around 30,000 square metres, will include a production and logistics hall, an office building and a technology centre.

The building complex is to receive Gold Level certification of the international Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard for ecological building. Only particularly sustainable buildings can receive the highest certification. To achieve this, CO2-reduced steel, so-called green steel, will be used in the construction of the campus.

Debrunner Acifer AG, a member of the Debrunner Koenig Group in St.Gallen, supplied a total of 600 tonnes of green steel for the Forster Campus. The order thus constitutes the first major project with green steel for the B2B trading partner and service provider in Switzerland. “Of course, conventional steel is also 100 per cent recyclable,” Willi Lüchinger, CEO of Forster Profilsysteme AG, is quoted as saying in a corresponding press release from Debrunner Acifer. “But with the use of CO2-reduced steel, we go one step further in sustainability: thanks to Green Steel, we achieve the LEED Gold level.”

  • Schlössli Schönegg becomes an innovation campus

Schlössli Schönegg becomes an innovation campus

The historic Schlössli Schönegg and its chalet on the Wilhelmshöhe in Lucerne have belonged to Stefan Muff, the main shareholder of the Axon Active Group, since 1998. Together with his brother Bruno, Muff renovated the building, which at the time was in great need of renovation, in close consultation with the monument preservation authorities. It then served as the headquarters of Endoxon AG, which developed technologies for digital maps and was sold to Google in 2006. Since 2008, the “Schlössli” has been the headquarters of the Axon Active Group, which is strategically positioned in the field of digital transformation. Axon deals with complex big data solutions for globally operating companies as well as digital ecosystems for diverse industries. Today, the group has over 750 employees at 18 locations around the globe. Currently, 50 people work at the headquarters – and the number is growing rapidly.

Muff had great visions for the Schönegg castle from the very beginning. He already planned for extensions when he bought the building. Today, the building can no longer meet the future requirements as a centre for providing digital services and for the planned research activities and the newly developed “DeepWorking” operating concept. For this reason, the newly initiated project envisages a supplementary new building as the “Axon Campus”, which is to serve as an innovation laboratory. This is intended to promote the interdisciplinary cooperation of various interest groups and ideas. The campus brings together stakeholders from education, politics, public authorities and business and lets them participate in forward-looking forms of society and business. At the same time, innovations can be experienced and tested in digital ecosystems. The environment is also intended to offer ideal conditions for start-ups, which is why the project has also been reported as the “Silicon Valley of Central Switzerland”.

    Sketch of the planned extension.

To meet the demands of a modern campus, the future space must be open, flexible and multifunctional. A gross floor area of 1500 square metres is planned with about 150 workplaces. The project also includes a high-quality canteen with a production kitchen and a fully digital and multifunctional auditorium for 120 people with an adjoining bar area. The new building will be adapted to the special local conditions and the resulting hazard situation due to possible landslides and rock falls. Comprehensive slope protection is guaranteed by the new building. The changing mobility requirements are also taken into account: by means of rented parking spaces on the Gibraltarstrasse level and the installation of e-mobility compliant parking and bicycle spaces in the new building, which is estimated at 15 million Swiss francs. The approval process is still underway. Occupation is expected in 2025 at the earliest.

Thanks to the project by the renowned architectural firm of Daniele Marques from Lucerne, the Wilhelmshöhe place of power will increasingly become a house of encounter and digital transformation. Muff envisions the place developing into a holistic innovation location. A possible opening of the rooms at weekends for educational institutions or other curated events is conceivable.

Energie 360° begins renovation of its headquarters

Energie 360° can begin the conversion of its headquarters in Zurich Altstetten. The energy provider, which is majority-owned by the city of Zurich, is investing almost 28 million Swiss francs in the redesign and expansion of its offices into an open office landscape, the construction of a large-scale photovoltaic system and the optimisation of the building services, according to a media release.

According to the release, Energie 360° received the building permit in January. The construction site can now be set up from the end of March. The renovation work should be completed by late autumn 2024. In the meantime, the employees will move their workplaces to a temporary headquarters in Zurich Altstetten.

The building is already fully supplied with renewable energy and is energy-optimised. In the course of the conversion, it will receive additional solar panels designed by Jessenvollenweider Architektur from Basel. The office is reportedly a pioneer in the field of photovoltaic systems. In future, the modules will produce around half of Energie 360°’s electricity requirements.

“The additional photovoltaic systems on the façade and the extension on the roof turn the headquarters into a green power plant with an exemplary function and a strong external impact,” Jörg Wild, CEO of Energie 360°, is quoted as saying in the media release.

The company wants to offer its customers exclusively renewable energy by 2040. As a sustainable energy and mobility service provider, it therefore also has its own energy consumption in mind.

Pistor may build new logistics facility

The wholesaler Pistor AG is allowed to expand its logistics at its headquarters in Rothenburg. The municipality’s electorate approved the Hasenmoos Süd development plan on 12 March, according to a media release.

Accordingly, Pistor can now begin with the detailed planning for new storage, goods handling and distribution areas on 31,700 square metres. Three construction phases are planned starting in 2026, and the company estimates that the costs will be in the high double-digit millions.

Part of the investment will be highly automated logistics solutions. With this, Pistor wants to offer its cooperative members and customers “the most efficient and reliable supply chain on the market”. Pistor mainly supplies bakeries and confectioners, but also catering companies, hospitals and nursing homes with food and goods.

In the future, Pistor wants to expand its scope of supply to include medical consumables such as hygiene masks and syringes. “The new, planned buildings will also form the basis for this.” The government council of the Canton of Lucerne still has to formally confirm the decision.

“We thank the people of Rothenburg for the trust they have placed in us,” Patrick Lobsiger, CEO of Pistor, is quoted as saying in the media release. Pistor is an important employer for the region and beyond.

  • Lonza is expanding in Basel

    Lonza is expanding in Basel

Lonza AG is expanding its operational headquarters in Basel, which has been located on the Lindenhof site since 1962, the cantonal administration of Basel-Stadt informs in a press release . Two more high-rise buildings are to be built in the vicinity of the existing Lonza high-rise building, which is under a preservation order. In addition to commercial and service areas that are required by Lonza, apartments "for different needs" are also planned, according to the statement.

The extension buildings are intended to “develop the area into a green, mixed-use and publicly accessible district component of the St. Alban district,” writes the canton administration. The edge of the park is to be preserved and planted with more trees. Grounds previously sealed by parking lots and tennis courts will be "upgraded and greened in terms of biodiversity and climate compatibility".

The plan requirement for the necessary change to a development plan from 1991 that was never implemented can be viewed at the cantonal building and transport department until September 30th. On September 6, Lonza also wants to provide information about the project itself from 6 p.m. in the Hotel Victoria.

Energie 360° renovates its headquarters in Altstetten

Energie 360° wants to convert and repair its headquarters at Aargauerstrasse 182 in Altstetten, which was built in 2003. The energy supplier, which is majority owned by the city of Zurich , is investing almost 28 million francs in this. In its capacity as client representative, the Office for Buildings of the City of Zurich has now submitted the corresponding building application, the city administration and energy company inform in a joint statement . They expect construction to begin next spring.

The conversion work is intended to adapt the headquarters to the requirements of a modern working environment "with flexible and hybrid working concepts", according to the statement. For this purpose, the existing premises are to be redesigned “into an open office landscape” with correspondingly modernized building services. A large-scale photovoltaic system is planned for the facades and roof.

After a "strategic review", the management of Energie 360° has given up on initial considerations of adding a new building to the existing building, the statement explains further. Instead, the existing building should be optimized "for an efficient and result-oriented working environment". Jessenvollweider Architektur from Basel is responsible for the architectural concept.

By 2040, Energie 360° wants to switch its offer exclusively to energy from renewable sources. According to the announcement, the conversion of the headquarters is driving this “transformation of the company and enables targeted energy saving measures in our own operations”.

  • Dutch central bank builds with new strength

Dutch central bank builds with new strength

The Dutch Central Bank uses CO2-neutral concrete in the renovation of its Amsterdam headquarters. This is made possible thanks to a collaboration between the Dutch New Horizon Urban Mining BV and the Swiss start-up neustark , according to a LinkedIn announcement .

New Horizon’s technology makes it possible to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete by 75 percent, they say. For this, cement is obtained from concrete recycling material. The remaining footprint is offset by neustark. The start-up has developed a technology with which CO2 from the atmosphere can be permanently stored in recycled concrete. For this purpose, liquid CO2 is introduced into demolition material.

Neustark is a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich ( ETH ) based in Bern. The company works with Holcim , among others, to drive innovation and sustainability in the construction sector. As part of the collaboration, neustark is investigating the CO2 conversion potential of Holcim’s recycled demolition concrete. Holcim, in turn, optimizes the concrete produced by neustark.

  • Aepli Metallbau establishes a new location in Gossau

Aepli Metallbau establishes a new location in Gossau

Aepli Metallbau normally builds metal construction for others – especially modern and energy-efficient facades made of glass and metal. The company's major projects include the HSG Learning Center in St. Gallen, the Basel Biozentrum and the Quadrolith in Baar. Today the family business, which has been based in Gossau for 108 years, has around 200 employees.

The previous headquarters on Industriestrasse is reaching its capacity limits despite extensions and the production halls spread over three locations. The third generation of the company's boss, Roman Aepli, decided to build a new headquarters. This is being built on the Sommerau-Nord site – right next to the Gossau motorway junction. Aepli was able to buy the 100,000 square meter land from the Migros Ostschweiz cooperative around two years ago.

The office building and a two-part production hall can be found on 35,000 square meters. The office building has five floors and a glass facade that tapers from top to bottom. This builds on the protruding and recessed Aepli Air Control facade elements. This is to ensure maximum energy efficiency. Photovoltaic systems on the flat roof of the production hall ensure sustainable electricity production. An underground car park with 166 parking spaces offers space for the service vehicles.

In this way, not only can Aepli Metallbau's production be bundled in one place, but the long-term future of the company in Gossau can also be ensured, as Roman Aepli says. Investments in the latest production technologies and digitization are planned. The automation in particular will take up a lot of space, which is why Sommerau-Nord is the ideal location. Thanks to the planned production lines, new processes are to be optimized, thereby increasing efficiency and quality.

The new building is the largest investment in the company's history. It is planned that production on the Sommerau can start in autumn 2022. The office space should also be ready for occupancy at the beginning of 2023.

Of the remaining 65,000 square meters of land, Aepli has kept 6,000 square meters as a reserve. The rest of the land was divided into three parcels and sold to three companies: The new owners are Huber Kunststoff AG, the powder coater Gema Switzerland GmbH and the cooperative butcher shop St. Gallen and the surrounding area.

But there are not only changes in the location, but also in the management: Since January 1, 2021, the new management team has consisted of long-term employees Matthias Elmer (Managing Director), Michael Röthenmund (Technical Director), Thierry Knöpfel (Head of Sales) and Marcel Rechsteiner (Head of Finance and HR). Aepli is concentrating on his duties as Chairman of the Board of Directors and on realizing the new company headquarters.

In a second construction phase, the up to 60 meter high west tower is to be built for urban uses and living, among other things. A shared underground car park is planned for both. The architecture competition is expected to be completed in 2021.

According to the Metall Zug Group, the development of the Tech Cluster Zug is “ another big step forward shortly after the project was communicated for SHL Medical AG in November 2020”. At that time , Metall Zug announced that the provider of drug delivery systems would build a combined production and office building on the site.
