    The retaining wall of the cathedral platform will be renovated

    The construction of the first retaining walls near the present cathedral platform began as early as the 14th century. Between 1479 and 1531, the walls were extended and took on their present appearance. The last major renovation work took place in the late 1980s. Today, the thirty-metre-high retaining wall is damaged in various places due to the weather and therefore needs to be renovated. The renovation work will be carried out in several stages until 2026.

    Cleaning and mortar application
    At the beginning of February, the renovation work will begin with the erection of the scaffolding at the eastern corner of the retaining wall. The work on the masonry will be of varying degrees of depth: Some larger areas of the wall will simply need to be cleaned and cleared of vegetation. On other parts of the wall, it will be necessary to apply mortar or fill in cracks and joints. The original structure is retained as far as possible. As part of the renovation, Energie Wasser Bern (ewb) is replacing the existing lighting on the wall with more economical LED spotlights. All the renovation work was planned in cooperation with the monument preservation service.

    The platformremains open
    The platform remains open during the renovation work. The respective work areas will be closed to the public with barriers. In the Badgasse, which is located at the foot of the wall, some of the parking spaces must be temporarily removed to allow for the installation of scaffolding and construction equipment. Replacement parking spaces will be provided. However, due to the narrowness of the space in the Matte, only part of the parking spaces can be replaced.

    Preservation of a historical monument
    The renovation of the retaining walls will preserve the cathedral platform as a historical monument in Bern’s old town and ensure safety. In March 2022, the City Council approved a construction credit of CHF 3.32 million for the renovation.

    dr Jennifer Dreyer (48) grew up in Giessen, Hesse, and completed her studies in Darmstadt, Stuttgart and Zurich. She is a civil engineer with a second degree in business administration and an ETH doctorate in public-private partnership. dr Jennifer Dreyer has been working for IMMO since 2016: initially as head of staff, since 2019 as head of the newly founded school buildings department and as deputy director. Previously, she was a member of the management board of a Zurich consulting office for maintenance management in structural and civil engineering.

    dr On November 1, 2022, Jennifer Dreyer will succeed Cornelia Mächler, who will concentrate on managing major strategic projects in the future. Cornelia Mächler will also assume the position of deputy director as of November 1st. Cornelia Mächler has worked for IMMO since it was founded in 2001 and has headed it for the past 17 years.

    Researchers at the Eidgenössische Materialprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt ( Empa ) are currently examining a new method for stabilizing the amount of stone in road construction. Specifically, according to the press release, it is about replacing the bitumen binding agent in the production of the driving surface. Asphalt consists of stones of different shapes and sizes and only becomes a surface that can be used for roads when it is stabilized with the help of bitumen.

    Bitumen causes environmental problems. Air pollutants are released during production from crude oil and later during use. Asphalt is also prone to cracks and deformations and impermeable to rainwater, which pollutes the environment.

    The two Empa researchers Martin Arraigada and Saeed Abbasion from the concrete and asphalt department at Empa are currently implementing a method known from art for the production of road surfaces in a test arrangement. In such art objects, stone steles have been used, which are stabilized by a weave of twine and withstand loads of up to 20 tons at a height of 80 centimeters.

    In the experiment, an electronically controlled robot arm applies a string to a stone layer in a specific pattern. By “interweaving” the stones are fixed in five layers in their position in the “road bed”. In tests, these were already as strong as conventional bitumen asphalt under loads of half a ton. Inexpensive twine was used, such as are conventionally used for tying up packages.

    The trials have not yet led to a ready-to-use product that could be used in road construction. The basic work, however, provides a lot of innovation potential in order to get closer to a recyclable and perhaps rollable road surface using simple means, according to the Empa announcement. Only South Korea and Singapore cut ahead of it. This makes Switzerland the most innovative country in Europe and overtakes Germany, which has fallen three places to fourth place compared to the previous year.

    A total of 60 countries are listed in the index. They are assessed on the basis of topics such as research and development, production capability and the concentration of listed high-tech companies. The respective countries can achieve a maximum of 100 points.

    Switzerland received an overall rating of 87.60 points this year. It did particularly well in the area of research and development. It ranks third for research intensity and fourth for concentration on researchers. Switzerland is also one of the top five countries in terms of manufacturing and value creation. She has some catching up to do with patents in particular.

    You, our members, are much more directly and substantially affected by the corona pandemic. Numerous location and economic promotions have had to experience that years of development work can become practically meaningless within a few weeks because of the lockdown or because of regional easing. Suddenly completely different factors were decisive for shopping, leisure and travel behavior, primarily the question: What is still allowed where? In such a situation – in which, in my view, federalism is reaching its limits – location and economic development can hardly exert any influence. To make matters worse: where the industry is struggling to survive, there is neither time nor energy, let alone money, left over to secure and promote regional location advantages. But right now it is important to think long-term, invest and expand on what has been achieved.

    In these special times, we would like to thank you all the more for your loyalty to our association – even if you could not benefit from all the services to which you are entitled as part of your membership in 2020.     Fischermätteli Burgdorf: Future-oriented area in the Minergie-A-Eco standard

    In December 2019, the excavators drove into the former industrial site in Burgdorf and the new Fischermätteli district should soon come to life: the first apartments will be ready for occupancy in summer 2021. By 2024, ten apartment buildings with 169 inexpensive 2.5 to 5.5 room apartments and living spaces between 52 and 140 square meters are to be built in a total of three construction phases. Located in an idyllic location in the immediate vicinity of the forest, the buildings are grouped around a central meeting zone with five differently designed outdoor spaces.

    Largest Minergie-A-Eco quarter made with Swiss wood

    The Fischermätteli settlement will one day be the largest development in Switzerland that will not only be built with Swiss wood, but also meet the Minergie-A-Eco standard. This requires a positive energy balance and the expenditure for space and water heating, air renewal as well as for all electrical devices and lighting must be covered by renewable energies. The addition Eco focuses on the issues of health and building ecology and ensures a high level of living comfort. "Based on the positive experiences we have made so far, it was the only right decision for us in terms of ecology and sustainability to build the Fischermätteli in the Minergie-A-Eco standard," explains Bruno Kälin. He is Head of Marketing and a member of the management team at Strüby Konzept AG. The Strüby companies act both as builders and as full service providers (project development, architecture, engineering, production, implementation, customer service, customer service) and are also responsible for sales.

    For the Fischermätteli, the client relies on spruce and silver fir from Swiss forests: “There is no better building material than wood. It is available locally, is growing steadily, is CO 2 -neutral, creates jobs in the region and ensures a good and healthy indoor climate, ”explains Kälin. The wood required for construction is bought directly from the forest owners, sawn, glued and processed in the region. Long transport routes are eliminated, which means that the embodied energy is very low.

    Sophisticated energy concept

    The client had put out a tender for the energy concept, which ewz won. The energy service company is responsible for planning, financing, realizing and operating the energy supply. The contracts run until December 2044 and begin in stages according to construction stages. The ewz Energy Solutions division has developed an integral concept for the Fischermätteli district, which, in addition to a sophisticated heat and power supply, also includes ancillary costs accounting that covers all media.

    All buildings on the site are connected to an area heating network. The heart of the heat supply is the heating center with an output of 550 kW. Wood pellets from the region are used as energy sources. The quality management system of the working group QM wood heating plants ensures efficient heat production. The energy service provider finances and implements the heating center and the lines for heat distribution to the house. The client, on the other hand, builds the installations for the domestic hot water and for the fine distribution of heat in the houses. A heat pump instead of wood heating could not be considered due to the geological conditions at the site.

    100 percent renewable solar power

    In addition to the heat supply contracts, ewz agrees electricity supply contracts with the owners. These regulate the supply of electricity to a total of seven floor and site owners. Since the Minergie-A building standard requires 100 percent coverage with renewable electricity, a photovoltaic system is installed on every house roof. The ten plants in the final stage will have an output of 722 kWp. According to project manager Christian Rolli from ewz Energielösungen, the challenge was to achieve the required solar power yield and still have enough space on the roofs for maintenance and servicing of the photovoltaic modules. The solution was to choose monocrystalline high-performance modules with a higher degree of efficiency, which produce more yield in less space, but this is reflected in a higher price. Around 3200 m 2 of photovoltaic modules are installed on the site. If, for example, there is such a high overproduction during the summer holidays that not all of the electricity can be fed into the grid, production can be reduced.

    The overall concept worked out by ewz Energielösungen convinced the client: "Our specifications for an ecological and economical solution that can be implemented and maintained holistically by one partner were implemented very well by ewz," says Bruno Kälin.

    Habitects launched in 2019 as a digital trading and service platform for the sanitary sector in Switzerland. The Winterthur start-up is now entering into a partnership with the Bringhen Group . The company, which was founded in 1959 and is based in Visp VS, is one of the largest specialist dealers in the construction sector with 14 locations throughout Switzerland and over 120,000 products. "For me this partnership is another important milestone in our company history", Jean-Pierre Bringhen, owner and CEO of the Bringhen Group, is quoted in the announcement from Habitects. "In order to take such a step outside of the traditional market structure, the group of companies had to reach a critical size with a corresponding market coverage."

    Bringhen also financially participates in the Winterthur company. Michael Lochmatter-Bringhen joins Habitects' board of directors.

    Thanks to the partnership, Habitects aims to become a leading marketplace in the Swiss construction trade. To this end, new services for craftsmen are to be launched. Digitization should be used for easier and more efficient handling of construction projects, Christoph Meili, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Habitects, is quoted in the announcement. This should benefit all stakeholders, from homeowners to architects and general contractors.

    Habitects is part of the ConReal Swiss digital ecosystem. This has spawned other companies in the construction and real estate sectors, including Fixify , houzy and SmartDevis . Further start-ups are in preparation, according to the announcement.
