    Three decades of engineering excellence in the field of wood and recycling

    PIRMIN JUNG Schweiz AG is celebrating its 30th anniversary. It was founded in 1996 by trained carpenter Pirmin Jung as an engineering and planning office for timber construction. According to a statement issued to mark the company’s anniversary, the one-man business has now become an “SME with comprehensive knowledge management, modern workplaces and an agile organisational structure”.

    In order to retain proven employees, new locations have been established over time – “not in city centres,” as the company emphasises, “but in locations that are easily accessible by transport, liveable for employees and close to home”. Today, more than 150 people at seven locations in Switzerland and Germany are involved in structural design, fire protection, building physics, sustainability planning and circular construction.

    According to the information provided, PIRMIN JUNG’s projects have repeatedly included those “that have shaped timber construction and are still considered flagship projects today. New solutions were developed that are now considered standard in timber construction.” The company cites the Aquabasilea water park in Pratteln BL, the seven-storey C13 building in Berlin, the 60-metre BF1 high-rise in Rotkreuz ZG and the Knies Zauberhut event centre in Rapperswil-Jona SG as examples.

    More recently, the new company headquarters in Sursee, the House of Wood, has been added as a development and showcase project for digital, climate-friendly and recyclable planning and construction, as well as the latest plans for the new Dock A at Zurich Airport, which will be built from 2030. The jury of the Prix SVC Central Switzerland 2023, which PIRMIN JUNG won, said it was “particularly impressed by the pioneering Haus des Holzes construction project, which embodies the company’s vision for the future of timber construction”.

    Conscious use of resources has always been deeply rooted in the company’s values, Pirmin Jung is quoted as saying. “The demand for climate-friendly and recyclable construction will increase, and we want to play a key role in shaping this development.”

    The Zurich School of Business(HWZ) has agreed partnerships with the Swiss Association of Industrial Engineers(VWI Switzerland) and the Swiss Chamber of Experts (STV). The collaboration is intended to bring science and practice closer together and open up new topics at the interface between business and technology, according to a press release.

    The collaboration with the national platform for industrial engineering and the competence centre for expert opinions in technology, construction and business is to be reflected above all in the continuing education sector. As a first step, a CAS Future Engineering continuing education programme will be launched at the HWZ from spring 2026. The programme is aimed at industrial engineers, technology managers, executives and consultants who want to strategically implement technological innovations, apply agile methods in practice and actively shape change in companies, according to the press release.

    “With the CAS Future Engineering HWZ, we are creating a continuing education programme that not only responds to today’s requirements in the technical environment, but also actively develops skills for tomorrow,” said Linard Barth, Head of the Department of Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Academy at the HWZ, in the press release. “The partnership with the VWI and the STV Chamber of Experts allows us to intelligently combine expertise from science, business and technology.”

    Researchers from the Mechanical Systems Engineering department of the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) in Dübendorf have been involved in the construction of a water pumping wheel in Steffisburg. According to a press release, the construction became necessary after the Zulg was lowered by two meters to protect the village from flooding. The Mühlebach stream, which had supplied Steffisburg’s businesses with water energy for centuries, was in danger of drying up, as was the surrounding ecosystem.

    The challenge was to adapt the plant to the requirements near Steffisburg. “With a minimum Zulg outflow of one cubic meter per second, it must feed at least 125 liters of water into the Mühlebach,” Silvain Michel, project manager at Empa, is quoted as saying in the press release, “and even with lower inflows, at least 100 liters per second must still be pumped in order to preserve the biotopes.”

    The model for the water pumping system was the pumping wheel developed by Walter Zuppinger in 1849. The water wheel, whose efficiency was scientifically confirmed in extensive tests in 2016, has already been used in the Glattfelden project installed by Empa.

    In the current project in Steffisburg, the water wheel was modified again and fitted with a separate drive wheel. In addition to Empa, the EKZ design office in Thun and CFD-Schuck GmbH were involved in the technical implementation.

    The Implenia construction group was the first construction and engineering company to receive the highest possible rating for sustainability. The New York-based financial services provider MSCI ESG Research, which is primarily active in investment banking, raised its rating from AA to AAA. MSCI ESG Research provides research, assessment and analysis of companies’ ESG (Environment, Social, Government) performance.

    “For us, the MSCI ESG rating AAA is further confirmation that we live sustainability, one of our five corporate values, successfully in everyday life and for the benefit of our customers,” CEO André Wyss is quoted as saying in a press release . “We not only develop and build sustainable areas in Switzerland and Germany, for example the 2000 watt-certified Lokstadt in Winterthur, but also support our customers in the planning and implementation of all questions relating to sustainable real estate and infrastructure.”

    In its announcement, Implenia refers to the recognition of its commitment to sustainability through other positive external evaluations. Among other things, Ecovadis awarded the group silver status. In addition, Sustainalytics classified Implenia as the industry leader in 2020 with a “high 84 points”.
