    Pistor’s growth requires larger buildings

Pistor has expanded the WUZ West goods handling centre in Rothenburg. According to a press release, the investment for the fully automated replenishment warehouse amounts to CHF 34 million. The building now has space for 22,000 pallets, 7,000 more than before.

According to Pistor, a solar system on the roof will supply enough electricity to power 66 households each year. “We have also installed a large underground storage system that allows us to heat the site with our own summer waste heat in winter and minimise CO2 emissions,” says business performance member and logistics manager Richard Betschart. Pistor is also reportedly expanding the number of electric lorries.

With the expansion measures, the catering wholesaler and service provider is reportedly responding to the continuously increasing demand. In addition to its core business of supplying bakeries and patisseries, the company also supplies catering and healthcare businesses such as hospitals and retirement homes.

However, Pistor says that the big leap is still to come: the company is planning new office, warehouse, goods handling and distribution space at its headquarters in Rothenburg, covering an area the size of four football pitches, by 2030. In addition, the ground-breaking ceremony for a distribution centre in Sennwald SG will take place this year. The aim is to supply eastern Switzerland even better from this centre.

Erne Group and Holinger AG invest in Swiss Blue Salmon

The Erne Group from Laufenburg AG and Holinger AG are new partners in Swiss Blue Salmon. The company, founded by CEO Ruedi Ryf in 2020, plans to build the world’s most modern land-based recirculation system for salmon farming in Mollis. It is also set to become the largest fish farm in Switzerland.

“The efforts of the municipalities of Glarus Nord and Weesen for optimised development and the entry of Erne and Holinger are key steps towards the realisation of our plant,” Ryf is quoted as saying in a press release. Daniel Erne, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Erne Group, is convinced by “this sustainable project and the business idea”: “Sensible projects like this are needed to tackle climate change. Together with Holinger, we have already realised many technically sophisticated hydraulic structures in Switzerland.”

A further investor round for private investors and organisations will run until the end of the year. In its press release, Swiss Blue Salmon points out that Glarus salmon farming offers potential for other forward-looking food projects. For example, local protein suppliers from insect or mushroom farms could provide sustainable feed for the salmon. Waste from beer production could also be considered as a food source. The company is also considering utilising fish waste for omega-3 and collagen products as well as animal feed.

“We believe that Glarus salmon will be well received by consumers,” says Philippe Derungs, Branch Manager of Holinger AG in Zurich. “This could trigger a growth spurt for the entire region.”

Hilcona creates a meadow on the roof

Hilcona has created a 1200 square meter roof meadow on the first completed new building at the company’s headquarters in Schaan. According to a press release, the roofs of the five-year expansion will also be planted in an “ecologically valuable” way. “The green areas provide more infiltration areas than concrete-sealed areas, relieve the sewage system and offer essential protection against heavy rain events,” says the Head of Technical Service, Peter Ritzer, in explanation.

As Hilcona further explains, green roofs are able to hold back and store water. Therefore, when building the new company building, care was taken to seal as little area as possible. They also absorb pollutants such as CO2 and clean water and air. On the other hand, the water on sealed surfaces such as conventional roofs, tar and concrete surfaces immediately drains into the sewer system and onto open floors. That causes floods and floods. The green roofs could cushion this.

In addition, they heat up less than gravel roofs, for example. They are also more durable and easy to care for. “With the roof meadow we want to give back as much as possible to nature,” says Ritzer.
