    Global ranking confirms long-term climate strategy

    KONE ranks 54th in this year’s Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World ranking by Corporate Knightsin Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In the Machinery industry group, the lift and escalator manufacturer even ranks second among 397 companies worldwide. In Finland, where KONE has had its headquarters in Espoo since 1910, it is the highest-ranked engineering company, as it is in Switzerland, where KONE (Switzerland) AG has been operating since 1996. The company employs over 60,000 people in more than 70 countries.

    In 2024, KONE was awarded the German Sustainability Award as the most sustainable company in the lifting and conveyor technology category. KONE is the first company in its industry to define ambitious and scientifically based climate targets for 2030, according to a press release. “For KONE, leadership in the industry always means leadership in sustainability,” said Kirsi Simola-Laaksonen, Senior Vice President for Sustainability and Environment. “This ranking is clear, independent proof of the progress we are making.”

    The company is committed to aligning its activities with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. “We understand that sustainable business is good business for our customers, their customers and for us,” said Simola-Laaksonen. “We continuously monitor how sustainable solutions impact our business and are increasing the share of our revenue from products and services that contribute to climate protection. Together with our customers, we develop smart and sustainable buildings, enabling better urban living.”

    The Ferrum Group has inaugurated its new ferruBase extension at its Schafisheim site, according to a press release. With the new building, the mechanical engineering company has realised a vertical production structure that creates space for 240 new office workstations, fully equipped production rooms and a future-oriented training workshop on around 14,000 square metres of floor space. More than 1,000 guests attended the opening and were able to gain an insight into the new building during expert tours.

    According to the press release, the new building seamlessly combines modern production processes with ergonomic office design and a training workshop. During the guided tours, employees, family members and guests were able to gain an initial insight into the architecture, construction method and new machinery. Catering was also provided at the opening ceremony and a varied entertainment programme was offered.

    For Ferrum, the new building is an investment in the future viability of the company and is intended to secure jobs in Aargau in the long term. At the same time, it also demonstrates how tradition and modern technology can be successfully combined.

    According to a press release,Kone is the first company in the lift industry to operate CO2-neutral production facilities worldwide. Kone Schweiz AG has its headquarters in Wangen-Brüttisellen. The parent company Kone, based in Espoo near Helsinki, Finland, has ten plants in seven countries around the world.

    The goal of CO2-neutral production has already been achieved earlier than planned, at the end of June 2023, it continues. “This is a significant step in Kone’s ambition to have the most resilient, sustainable and competitive supply chain in the industry,” Mikko Korte, Executive Vice President of Kone Supply Chain, is quoted as saying. “Sustainability is a core principle of all our business areas and activities. Our manufacturing facilities are an integral part of our supply chain operations and carbon footprint,” said Korte.

    As part of its Scope 1 emissions targets, Kone is constantly investing in energy efficiency and is endeavouring to switch to electric vehicles in all its manufacturing units. Scope 1 includes all emissions for which a company is directly and immediately responsible. Kone has invested in energy efficiency, production line robotics and automation, including the introduction of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems that contribute to increased energy savings. In 8 out of 10 factories, conventional forklift trucks have been replaced by electric models and the diesel-powered forklift trucks use biofuels, the report continues.

    Kone is one of the world’s leading suppliers in the lift, escalator and automatic door industry. in 2022, more than 60,000 employees in more than 1,000 branches in over 60 countries worldwide generated annual sales of 10.9 billion euros.

    Schindler generated global sales totaling CHF 2.80 billion in the first quarter of 2023. This corresponds to year-on-year growth of 6.2 percent, the Lucerne-based lift manufacturer said in a statement. At 2.89 billion Swiss francs, however, incoming orders were 8.7 per cent lower than in the first quarter of 2022.

    “Delays at construction sites and the uncertainty on the international capital markets are having an increasingly negative impact on the real estate sector, despite strong demand in the residential construction sector,” Silvio Napoli, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Schindler, is quoted as saying in the release. “Even in this challenging environment, Schindler achieved sales growth in all regions and product lines.”
    The operating result at EBIT level increased year-on-year from CHF 211 million to CHF 282 million. Adjusted for the sale of the former factory site in Suzhou, net profit of CHF 186 million was 29.2% higher than in the same quarter of the previous year.

    In the same press release, Schindler also announced a change in the Group Executive Committee. The newly appointed Chief Technology Officer Donato Carparelli will replace Karl-Heinz Bauer, who is retiring.

    At the end of March, Schindler also won a lawsuit that had been ongoing for almost ten years. The background to the case is the capital increases at Hyundai Elevator, which were carried out against the wishes of shareholder Schindler. The Supreme Court of the Republic of Korea ruled in favour of Schindler in the liability suit against various members of the Board of Directors of Hyundai Elevator, according to the statement.

    HighStep Systems AG , based in Dietikon, has delivered up to seventeen units of the latest generation of its service lift to customers. These include the transmission system operator 50Hertz from Berlin, the Dutch technical service provider SPIE and the Swiss wind turbine company Agile Wind Power . According to the CEO of Systems AG, Alexander Luft, further deliveries to China, for example, are to take place in the coming months. He emphasizes: "We are pleased that after intensive development work we have brought the first lifts of the new generation onto the market. This is a fundamental further development in close cooperation with TÜV Süd in order to meet the increased requirements in terms of standards and quality.”

    The HighStep Lift is considered the world's first mobile, battery-powered service lift for buildings and masts of all kinds. It is intended to enable efficient, safe and ergonomic ascent and descent, thereby drastically increasing the safety and productivity of employees. The capacity is 3000 meters altitude, people or material weighing up to 150 kilograms can be transported. Among other things, the new generation brings an even higher level of safety thanks to a separate fall protection runner and other new safety functions.

    The system consists of two components: an aluminum rail as a system carrier and a selectable climbing device, the HighStep Easy and the portable HighStep Lift. In terms of application, the focus is on electricity pylons, wind turbines, transmission towers and industrial plants. A total of several thousand installations are in operation worldwide – primarily in Europe and also in Asian countries. Customers include the Swiss transmission grid operator Swissgrid , the European high-voltage grid operator TenneT and the Chinese energy company State Grid Corporation of China . yvh

    Schindler setzt Installationsroboter erstmals in Asien ein

    Aufzugbauer Schindler bringt seinen Installationsroboter R.I.S.E. jetzt auch im Asien-Pazifik-Raum zum Einsatz. In Schanghai bohrte er unzählige Löcher für die Installation von fünf Fahrstühlen in einem der grössten Geschäftskomplexe der Innenstadt. Auch im Singapurer Wohnbauprojekt Avenue South Residence nahm R.I.S.E. Monteuren diesen Teil der Arbeiten ab. Dort wurden laut einer Medienmitteilung weitere zehn Fahrstühle installiert.

    „Mit Schindler R.I.S.E. machen wir Hochbaustellen sicherer und effizienter“, so Schindlers COO Paolo Compagna. „Der Roboter übernimmt das Bohren von Tausenden Ankerbolzen, die für die Installation von Aufzügen erforderlich sind und trägt so zu mehr Arbeitssicherheit bei. Monteure können ihre Zeit so für anspruchsvollere Tätigkeiten nutzen.“ Dies garantiere eine schnellere und effizientere Projektabwicklung, „was in einer Zeit, in der weltweit viele mit Verzögerungen auf Baustellen konfrontiert sind, noch wichtiger geworden ist“.

    Schindler verweist darauf, dass es diese „bahnbrechende“ Innovation in der Kategorie Innovation Leaders in die engere Auswahl für den Swiss Technology Award geschafft habe. Er gilt als der bedeutendste Innovations- und Technologiepreis der Schweiz.
