    SBC launches election platform “For a constructive Switzerland

    The density of regulation in the construction sector, the 2050 climate targets, security of supply and the shortage of skilled workers are key concerns of the population, the economy and politics and will accordingly also be the focus of the federal elections on 22 October 2023. The SBC has therefore chosen these key issues for its national election platform “For a constructive Switzerland”. This with the catchy slogan “We modernise, we build, we take responsibility”. Gian-Luca Lardi, Central President of the Swiss Association of Master Builders, states: “The main construction trade can and wants to contribute to constructive solutions for the future”. Until election day on 22 October, the positions on these topics, which are also at the heart of the SBC’s “Agenda 125.0”, will be presented on www.konstruktive-schweiz.ch. On the other hand, candidates will be presented on the platform whom the SBC recommends to the voters for election. Newsletters, posts in the social media, reporting in the association’s publications and construction site leaflets round off the communication support for the candidates. The SBC works closely with its cantonal sections on this.

    Since Switzerland’s building stock is responsible for almost half of the country’s energy consumption, this is another area where we must take action, says Martin Bäumle, a member of the Zurich National Council: “Security of supply is of central importance. That’s why it’s crucial that we renovate buildings to make them more energy-efficient and enable efficient new buildings.” In concrete terms, higher incentives and the removal of barriers to modernisation could help Switzerland to increase its building renovation rate to the necessary level.

    In addition to modern buildings, Switzerland also needs a top infrastructure, says Bernese National Councillor Christian Wasserfallen: “After all, infrastructures are Switzerland’s lifeline.” Alex Farinelli, National Councillor for Ticino and candidate for the Council of States, adds: “The ecological and energy challenges require an efficient infrastructure and a modern building stock. That’s why it’s important to give the building sector the opportunity to make its contribution with faster procedures and fewer bureaucratic hurdles.” The necessary framework conditions and legal certainty are created by politics, while the construction work is done by the master builders.

    Last but not least, the shortage of skilled workers is also a topic in the campaign of the Swiss Association of Master Builders. The challenges of finding the necessary personnel are also great in the main construction trade. “I am committed to a constructive Switzerland that continues to train enough practitioners to implement Switzerland’s modernisation in buildings and infrastructure,” emphasises Isabelle Chassot, Fribourg’s Councillor of States. “We must take decisive action against the shortage of skilled workers,” adds Diana Gutjahr, National Councillor for the Canton of Thurgau. This starts with ensuring that vocational apprenticeships remain as attractive as possible, Gutjahr continues.

    Sika beschleunigt mit dieser Akquisition die Erweiterung des Portfolios im Bereich Building Finishing und stärkt den Ausbau des Vertriebskanals in Peru, wodurch sich spannende Chancen für das Cross-Selling ergänzender Produkte wie Dicht- und Klebstoffe, Flüssigmembrane und Abdichtungssysteme ergeben. Die Produktionsstandorte von Chema ergänzen perfekt jene von Sika in Peru. Nach der Übernahme verfügt Sika über ein landesweites Netz an Produktionsstätten für Mörtelprodukte und kann Kunden in ganz Peru die Dienstleistungen und Lösungen der gesamten Gruppe anbieten. Die Übernahme erfolgt vorbehaltlich der Zustimmung der lokalen Kartellbehörden.

    Five technologies on the way to net zero

    The TA-Swiss study aims to inform policy-makers and the public about the opportunities, limits and risks of different methods for CO2 extraction and storage. Aspects such as feasibility, climate effectiveness, costs, resource consumption and impacts on the environment and population were considered.

    The five technologies are:

    • the storage of CO2 as biomass in forests and the use of wood
    • storage in the form of humus in the soil and the use of plant carbon
    • capture and storage of CO2 from biomass combustion (BECCS)
    • removal from the air and storage (DACCS)
    • the accelerated weathering of demolition concrete and rock (carbonation)

    Each of the five NETs was assessed based on the current state of knowledge and with the help of expert interviews. Potential opportunities, risks, synergies and conflicts were identified and considered from a system perspective. Based on this, general and specific, technology-related options for action and recommendations were derived and reflected on together with selected stakeholders.

    The most important general recommendations of the study
    In order for NET’s contribution to the net-zero target to be implemented in an environmentally and socially compatible manner, politics and society should address the issue at an early stage. This requires in particular that the public is involved in shaping the conditions of use of NET by means of fact-based and comprehensible information.

    There is a need for an overarching strategy for the use of limited resources, such as renewable energy, water, biomass and soil, and for financing for the development and implementation of NET.

    Further research is needed to determine the potential of the different technologies.

    It must be possible to record the amount of CO2 removed from the atmosphere in the long term in a transparent and simple way to create a reliable assessment framework and avoid counting the same CO2 more than once.

    The minimum period of CO2 fixation from which a technology or NET project is recognised in terms of the Climate Strategy should be reflected.

    NETs can only be used as a supplement to the priority reduction of greenhouse gas emissions when achieving the net zero target. Therefore, it is important that separate targets apply to the reduction of CO2 emissions and to CO2 removal.

    Switzerland currently has a pioneering role in the development of NET. This competitive advantage should be further strengthened by promoting the relevant research and development, as well as demonstration projects.

    CKW lays high-voltage lines in the ground in Littau

    CKW investiert in der Agglomeration Luzern in mehreren Projekten in die Versorgungssicherheit und in ein weiterhin zuverlässiges Stromnetz. So erfolgte am 19. September 2022 der Baustart zur Verlegung der Freileitung zwischen der Unterstation Ruopigen und Oberwil in Littau. Die Hochspannungsleitung führt aktuell mitten durch Quartiere und über das Schulareal Rönnimoos. CKW verlegt die Leitung auf einer Länge von 1210 Metern in den Boden. Dank der Verlegung der Hochspannungsleitung wird das Gebiet Rönnimoos entlastet. Zudem ermöglicht sie der Stadt Luzern, das Gebiet Längweiher/Udelboden mit einer neuen Überbauung zu erschliessen und das Schulhaus Rönnimoos zu erweitern. Bis Sommer 2023 soll die aufwändige Verkabelung fertig sein. Danach erfolgt der Rückbau der bestehenden Freileitung.

    Aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht wäre für CKW der Zeitpunkt für einen Ersatz der Hochspannungs-Freileitung noch nicht notwendig. Sie erreicht erst in gut 20 Jahren ihr Lebensende. CKW und die Stadt Luzern haben sich darum bereits 2019 in einer Vereinbarung auf einen Kostenteiler geeinigt. Die Stadt Luzern beteiligt sich mit 995’000 Franken an den Gesamtkosten von 3,2 Mio. Franken. Dadurch entstehen den Netzkunden von CKW keine zusätzlichen Kosten.

    Während den Bauarbeiten wird die Luzernstrasse in Littau im Bereich des Schulhauses Rönnimoos zeitweise nur einspurig befahrbar sein. Die Stromversorgung ist gewährleistet.

    Erneuerung der Unterstation Horw ist bald abgeschlossen
    Bevor die neue Leitung in Littau ans Netz gehen kann, muss die Erneuerung der Unterstation in Horw abgeschlossen sein. Sie ist ein wichtiger Knotenpunkt im CKWVerteilnetz und wird unter anderem von der Unterstation Ruopigen gespiesen. Aktuell erneuert CKW das Gebäude und einen Grossteil der Technik der Unterstation Horw.
    Zudem erfolgt an den bestehenden Transformatoren eine Spannungserhöhung von 50’000 auf 110’000 Volt. CKW investiert mit diesen Projekten rund 11,5 Mio. Franken in die Sanierungen und den Ausbau der Netzinfrastruktur. Sie stärkt damit heute und in Zukunft die Versorgungssicherheit in den Regionen Horw, Kriens, Littau und der Stadt Luzern.

    Im Energiesektor ist der Frauenanteil seit jeher gering, in Führungspositionen erst recht. Die Bedingungen sind für Frauen schwieriger als für Männer. Das beginnt schon bei der Ausbildung, denn Frauen trauen sich immer noch zu selten, mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliche oder technische Berufe zu ergreifen. Dabei bringen sie nicht weniger mathematisches oder technisches Verständnis mit, sind aber gleichzeitig stark am Gemeinwohl und an Innovationen interessiert.  

    Klimabewegung in weiblicher Hand 
    Eine gute Nachricht vorweg: Der Frauenanteil im Bereich der erneuerbaren Energien wächst stärker als im konventionellen Energiesektor. Ein möglicher Grund könnte das steigende Bewusstsein für den Klimawandel sein, denn schlussendlich ist weltweit die Klimabewegung weitgehend weiblich. Zudem geben Frauen als Grund für ihre Berufswahl häufig an, mit ihrer Tätigkeit etwas Sinnvolles tun zu wollen. Frauenpower ist also erwünscht: Denn es ist längst erwiesen, dass Unternehmen von einer vielfältigeren Belegschaft und einem gemischten Führungsteam nachhaltig profitieren.

    Doch wie sieht es eigentlich beim Energielösungsunternehmen Helion aus, dass in einer typischerweise Männer dominierten Branche tätig ist. Oder ist dem überhaupt so?
