Photovoltaic system combines culture with sustainability

In future, the Museum Langmatt will produce renewable solar power with a 40/45 kilowatt photovoltaic system, enough for the annual consumption of 15 to 20 flats. The grey in-roof modules were installed by Regionalwerke Baden. According to a statement from Regionalwerke, the modules were in keeping with the spirit of the museum, which was built by Sidney Brown, co-founder of the technology group ABB: “Contemporary technology is perfectly compatible with the historical spirit of the Langmatt,” says Markus Stegmann, Director of the Langmatt Museum.

The PV system is installed on the roof of the newly installed glass pavilion in the park, which was built as part of the complete renovation and expansion of the complex. “The pavilion is intended for readings, concerts and aperitifs for group visits,” says Stegmann.

While the PV modules have already been in operation for a month, the renovation work is not expected to be completed until next year. The art nouveau villa Langmatt, which now houses the museum, was built around 125 years ago on behalf of the art-loving industrialist couple Brown. The museum therefore houses an important collection of French Impressionists such as Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

ERNE is involved in the complete renovation of the Langmatt Museum in Baden. Specifically, the construction company from Laufenburg is to take on part of the renovation of the villa. “The work includes the demolition of entire rooms inside the building and the subsequent reconstruction of floor slabs, walls and ceilings, the renewal of the sewerage system and the partial demolition of the exterior façade, including façade renovation,” explains ERNE in a post on LinkedIn. ERNE also moved benches and steel supports for the construction of a new glass pavilion.

The overall refurbishment of the villa and the surrounding public park will take place this year and next. Meanwhile, the museum’s private collection of French Impressionism in Europe will be sent on a European tour. The Langmatt Museum is due to reopen in spring 2026.

    Museum Langmatt exhibits winning project

The Langmatt Foundation, together with the city of Baden and the canton of Aargau, launched the Museum Langmatt – general renovation project. A total of 50 architectural offices took part in a competition, six of which were invited to the second round. Their designs show a pavilion in the park and a new entrance area for the museum. They will be exhibited in the museum from August 28th, according to a media release.

At the center of the exhibition is the winning design by Ernst Niklaus Fausch Partner AG . Their pavilion creates a visual connection to the utility building without actually being connected to it. The pavilion is to be used for vernissages and other events. The new entrance area is being built in the utility building and includes the cash register, a shop or the cloakrooms.

"We are pleased about the substantial improvements in future use", Langmatt director Markus Stegmann is quoted in the message. “With the new pavilion and entrance area, Langmatt is excellently positioned for the future. With its strong visual presence, the transparent pavilion symbolizes the new Langmatt for everyone. "
