  • Basel focusses on the circular economy

Basel focusses on the circular economy

BaselCircular is not a traditional funding initiative, but forms the basis for a new innovation ecosystem in the region. As a public-private partnership, the initiative is working with the Basel business community to develop structures that combine knowledge, research and entrepreneurship. At the centre of this is the networking of established companies, start-ups and universities. They form a system that promotes innovation, shares knowledge and makes circular business models marketable – according to the principle of “enabling the enabler”.

    Knowledge, technology and cooperation
A central field of action is the creation of digital platforms for knowledge exchange and cooperation. Practical tools and expert systems are being developed in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland and other scientific partners. AI-based tools are planned to make it easier for companies to adapt circular solutions. However, personal exchange remains crucial, as technology serves as an amplifier for human collaboration.

    Inspiring the next generation
The network aims to inspire young people to become entrepreneurs in the circular economy. Together with educational institutions, programmes are being developed to promote start-ups. Existing start-up support centres are supported in firmly integrating sustainability into their competitions and training courses.

    Shaping the future
A survey of companies in Basel has shown that knowledge and implementation levels in the circular economy vary greatly. BaselCircular is responding to this with customised offers and close collaborations, initially in the construction and life sciences sectors. Further areas will be added from 2025. This is a clear signal that Basel is actively strengthening its role as a centre of innovation and is resolutely driving forward the transformation towards a resource-efficient economy.

  • 6G Europe network shapes digital transformation

6G Europe network shapes digital transformation

The wireless transmission of time-critical data was previously considered a technical hurdle, especially in industrial applications with high safety requirements. The Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems has now developed a solution that sets new standards. A modular testbed for time-sensitive networking that combines real-time analysis with energy-efficient operation and enables wireless data transmission via Li-Fi for the first time.

Li-Fi utilises light for data transmission and offers high speed, low latency and high reliability. Ideal conditions for the mobile use of autonomous robots or machines on factory floors. In combination with TSN, this creates an infrastructure that is not only more flexible, but also more robust and cost-efficient. Elaborate cabling becomes superfluous, without compromising on data security.

Energy efficiency as a key factor
Energy consumption was a key development issue. Especially in mobile applications, energy efficiency is crucial for the operating time. With the new testbed, Fraunhofer IPMS is offering a realistic basis for comparing TSN networks and their energy consumption for the first time.

The aim is to extend the operating time of devices through targeted optimisation and at the same time reduce the load on infrastructures. This is supported by TSN standards such as IEEE 802.1AS, which ensure high-precision time synchronisation and redundant data paths – essential for safety-critical scenarios.

    Research for 6G
The Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg is also working on the future of digital communication. At the renowned European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP) 2025, Professor Dr Susanne Hipp and her team presented their latest research on wave propagation in the 6G frequency range beyond 100 GHz.

Verena Marterer is researching the dielectric properties of textiles for smart sensors in the healthcare sector. Franziska Rasp is working on antenna concepts for vehicle communication, a core element for autonomous driving. Both projects impressively demonstrate how broad and practical the potential applications of future mobile communications technologies will be.

6G as a platform for the digital transformation
The introduction of 6G from 2030 will bring enormous changes. Transmission rates of up to 1,000 gigabits per second, extremely low latency times, massive device density and new services such as immersive environments in the metaverse or remote medical care in real time.

Europe is actively positioning itself. Fraunhofer, Telekom, Vodafone and other players are driving basic research forward. Germany is funding development with over 700 million euros. The first pilot projects are planned from 2028. New devices, chips and frequency technologies will form the technical basis, with AI, cloud-edge computing and sustainability as guiding principles.

Europe is reinventing the digital infrastructure
What was previously considered a dream of the future is becoming reality. Wireless real-time communication, energy-saving networks and ultra-precise high-frequency technology are merging to create a new generation of infrastructure. The impetus from research institutions such as the Fraunhofer IPMS or the OTH Regensburg proves that Europe is ready to take a leading role in the 6G era – sustainable, intelligent and connected.

  • Zurich Stadelhofen is open to the public

Zurich Stadelhofen is open to the public

With 80,000 travellers a day, Zurich Stadelhofen is a central transport hub in the city. However, the three existing tracks are overloaded and limit the growth of the S-Bahn. The construction of a fourth track and an additional tunnel in the direction of Tiefenbrunnen will massively increase capacity. An expansion that will have an impact far beyond the city limits.

    More capacity, better connections
The expansion should enable up to 50 per cent more train movements. It paves the way for a comprehensive quarter-hourly service throughout the entire Zurich S-Bahn network. An improvement that will benefit not only the city of Zurich but also the 6 neighbouring cantons. The project involves several sections, including a new main access, improved passages and additional platform access in the Kreuzbühl-/Mühlebachstrasse area.

Ten years of construction and an investment of CHF 1.1 billion
The project will take around ten years to complete. If everything runs smoothly and there are no objections, construction should start in the second half of the 2020s, with commissioning scheduled for the 2030s. The estimated costs amount to around 1.1 billion Swiss francs. A significant but necessary step for a sustainable mobility infrastructure.

Transparency and participation – project open to the public at
The project will be open to the public in Zurich and Dübendorf from 14 May to 12 June 2025. The complete plans can be viewed in Zurich and those for the Zürichberg tunnel in Dübendorf. SBB specialists will be on hand to answer questions. A planned major expansion with room for dialogue.

The park now has over 100 members, including well-known players in the Swiss construction industry and research institutions. This network provides direct access to decision-makers and a platform for start-ups to forge important collaborations in a traditionally risk-averse industry.

    Provision of funding and resources
The funds provided by private investors, the Zuger Kantonalbank and the park itself, which amount to a single-digit million sum, will enable buildify.earth to make significant initial investments, which are to be announced soon. The investment pipeline is richly filled, including 40 startups that are already members of the park. Buildify.earth AG takes a flexible role as a co-investor that can act quickly and act as a catalyst for further investments.

Long-term planning and open doors for further investors
Reto Largo and Sem Mattli, the heads of buildify.earth, are not only looking for promising start-ups, but also for further investors to strengthen the capital of the company’s evergreen structure. This structure fits well with the long innovation cycles in the construction sector and allows a portion of the proceeds to be reinvested while seeking attractive returns for investors. This is just the beginning of a long-term strategy aimed at making substantial investments in promising start-ups and actively shaping the future of the sustainable construction industry.

  • First Swiss Hydrogen Congress

    First Swiss Hydrogen Congress

The first Swiss Hydrogen Congress took place in Yverdon-les-Bains on 28 March. The event brought together entrepreneurs, experts from science and industry as well as political decision-makers. The diversity of the speakers made it possible to cover the topic from numerous angles. The first Swiss Hydrogen Congress was organised in collaboration with Planair, CleanTech Alps and the Western Switzerland H2 Network and was a complete success.

Hydrogen is not a panacea for solving all of Switzerland’s energy problems, but it does offer numerous opportunities. The first Swiss Hydrogen Congress saw fruitful dialogue and strong collaboration. This demonstrates the importance of the topic for Switzerland, and everyone involved is willing to work together to strengthen the country’s competitiveness and build a sustainable energy future.

What needs to be remembered from this day
Representatives from the energy, gas and industrial sectors, entrepreneurs and politicians all agree that it is essential for Switzerland to be connected to the European grid. It is crucial that our country does not miss out on this opportunity.

Another important point is the demand for a clear strategy and suitable framework conditions on the part of the federal government in order to drive the market forward.

Despite the existing operational challenges, the congress was able to draw positive conclusions from ongoing projects such as Green Gaz in Aigle and Hydrospider. Participants were given an insight into the development of hydrogen projects such as H2 Bois, Gruyère Hydrogène Power and Prhysm.

In addition, aeesuisse presented its positioning on the topic of hydrogen with the publication of the brochure “10 points on hydrogen”.

A passion that transcends our borders
Hydrogen is a hot topic now more than ever. It is moving experts and politicians beyond Switzerland’s borders. In Europe, discussions about its opportunities and risks are accelerating and are in full swing. Switzerland and its pool of expertise have a key role to play here. “We are currently experiencing a strong enthusiasm for hydrogen, with major announcements at international level. Switzerland is a leader in innovation in many areas, such as compression and storage. We must therefore consolidate our leading position and not allow ourselves to be overtaken by our European competitors,” says Laurent Scacchi, Director of Western Switzerland at aeesuisse.

  • Communities can strengthen Alpine destinations

    Communities can strengthen Alpine destinations

Community building is an approach that can be used to minimise seasonal fluctuations in Alpine destinations and combine tourism with living space, Andermat Swiss Alps AG explains in a press release. Together with Bregaglia Engadin Turismo and the Graubünden University of Applied Sciences, it has launched a research project funded by Innotour to explore ways of building resilient communities. The research partners have now presented their initial findings in a recent report.

In the report, communities are understood as networks with a group identity. In mountain regions, they form in different compositions of locals, second home residents, guests, employees and employers. According to the researchers’ findings, three areas are crucial for the development of communities. Firstly, the understanding of identity at the centre of each of these communities. The second and third areas are collective experience and structure.

According to the press release, building and expanding resilient communities is time-consuming and costly. The communities “require coordination, maintenance and moderation, which in turn emphasises the targeted activation of individual community members”.

  • SAEKI Robotics receives $2.3 million in funding

SAEKI Robotics receives $2.3 million in funding

SAEKI Robotics has received $2.3 million from investors. The early financing round of the spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich(ETH), founded in 2022, was led by the Zurich-based investment firm Wingman Ventures. In addition, the two venture capital firms Vento from Turin and GETTY from New York as well as angel investors participated.

According to a SAEKI announcement on LinkedIn, the funding will “support our mission to build a network of decentralised automated factories that combine digital manufacturing and robotics to produce large parts at the speed of light”, such as wind turbine blades, components for concrete building parts or aircraft and car parts.

According to a Techcrunch article linked by SAEKI in the release, the three founders are focusing on building fully automated factories with independent robotic cells that can be booked by customers. “What we hear over and over again from people and companies is the desire for faster and more sustainable solutions for their parts,” co-founder Andrea Perissinotto is quoted as saying there. “The mere offer of savings from a multi-million dollar machine that requires a lot of space and additional resources, including hiring people who know new processes and materials, is not attractive to them.”

The company also reportedly plans to collaborate with the composites industry for lightweight but strong parts in aircraft, cars and bicycles. SAEKI’s technology is expected to eliminate the time-consuming and expensive production of complex moulds from metal or composites, and thus a bottleneck for companies.

Sustainable building network develops new standard

The Zurich Sustainable Building Network Switzerland (NNBS) has published a new measuring and control instrument for sustainable building. As of April, a specially set up technical secretariat takes care of the announcement of the new standard, as stated in a press release . The department is intended to be the point of contact for engineers, planners and builders in all construction phases.

The civil engineer and professor for sustainable building at the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Burgdorf, Stephan Wütherich, is in charge of the secretariat. Erdjan Opan from OPAN concept SA also brings his knowledge to the secretariat. He played a key role in developing the standard for sustainable building in the infrastructure sector.

The standard measures the sustainability of a project using 75 indicators. It can be used in all project phases from the location decision through project development and construction to operation, maintenance and dismantling. The users use it to assess various topics such as health and safety, costs and benefits, energy and soil, as well as community, climate and landscape, like checklists.

The catalog also helps to question established processes, raise funds and support communication with political actors and the population, according to the announcement.

The standard is based on the SIA 112/2 "Sustainable Building – Civil Engineering and Infrastructures" standard and is compatible with other application systems.
