    Swiss data ecosystem

    Data is a key resource for economic development, research and social progress. To prevent data from remaining in isolated silos, the federal government is focussing on a national data ecosystem. This comprises topic-specific data spaces in which companies, universities, authorities and organisations can exchange data in a secure and controlled manner.

    The Federal Council has instructed the Federal Chancellery to create a central contact point to coordinate these data rooms. The Swiss Data Ecosystem Focal Point, which began operations on 15 January 2025, is operated by the Federal Chancellery in collaboration with the Federal Office of Communications, the Federal Statistical Office and the Directorate of International Law.

    Coordination, advice and international networking
    The main task of the contact point is to create the basis for an interoperable data ecosystem. This includes regulations, technical standards and organisational structures. At the same time, it supports ongoing data room projects with conceptual, organisational and legal advice.

    A central element is the networking of the relevant players. Experts can exchange knowledge and experience in so-called communities of practice in order to accelerate the development of joint data solutions. In addition, the contact point works with international partners such as the Fraunhofer Institute to ensure the compatibility of Swiss data spaces with European and global initiatives.

    Making data usable for business, research and society
    Several data room projects are already under development, for example in the areas of health (“DigiSanté”), tourism (“National Data Infrastructure for Tourism”) and agriculture (“agridata.ch”). Another example is the planned mobility data space, in which players from public transport, logistics and the authorities exchange mobility data. This will enable more efficient traffic management, optimised route planning for freight forwarders and faster response times for emergency services.

    With the new contact point, Switzerland is taking an important step towards utilising the potential of data sustainably and promoting digital innovations across industry and administrative boundaries.

    Failure of the merger endeavours between Limmatstadt AG and Regionale 2025

    The plans to join forces in the Limmat Valley by merging the private-sector Limmatstadt AG and the publicly financed Regionale 2025 association have failed. The two organisations, which had previously worked in parallel on the development of the Limmat Valley as a whole, were unable to agree on a joint structure and financing for a future public-private partnership. This development now raises questions about the continuation of location promotion activities in the region.

    The two organisations have existed side by side for a decade with similar objectives but different approaches and funding models. While the Limmat Valley Regional Project Show Association concentrates on the realisation of an exhibition of regional projects, Limmatstadt AG focuses on regional location promotion.

    Last year, Limmatstadt AG initiated a strategy project to develop a sustainable structure for regional development with stakeholders from various sectors. The strategy paper “Together for the Limmat Valley” aimed to merge the two organisations from 2026 in order to tackle regional challenges more efficiently.

    However, these plans were rejected by the board members of the Limmattal Regional Project Show association, which puts the continuation of the project in question. In response to this development, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Limmatstadt AG, Balz Halter, has announced his resignation and will withdraw from the organisation.

    Limmatstadt AG has worked intensively over the last ten years to establish the Limmat Valley as a region and to represent its interests. In view of the current situation, it is now being discussed whether and how location promotion in the Limmat Valley should be continued.

    The early public general meeting on 12 March 2024 is intended to provide the framework for a comprehensive discussion on the future of Limmatstadt AG and location promotion in the Limmat Valley.

    SVSM Award 2022: projects are nominated

    The Swiss Association for Location Management SVSM has been presenting the SVSM Awards annually since 2007. These are awards for particularly innovative projects in the areas of location marketing, location development and business promotion. 14 applications were received for this year's awards – from municipalities, cities and organizations from Lake Constance to Upper Valais. A jury evaluated these based on defined criteria and nominated the following six projects for the 2022 awards:

    • “Big Air Chur” city event – submitted by the city of Chur's business contact point

    • Conversion of the old spinning mill in Lichtensteig – submitted by the Stadtufer cooperative

    • "valais4you" project to promote the immigration of skilled workers –

    submitted by the regional and economic center of Upper Valais

    • Joint project "BIGNIK" to strengthen identification –

    submitted by REGIO Appenzell AR-St.Gallen-Bodensee

    • “Werkstadt Zürisee” to develop the Rütihof workplace area –

    submitted by the city of Wädenswil

    • Launch of the integrated location promotion for the Zurich Oberland –

    Submitted by the Zurich Oberland Promotion Association

    With the nomination, however, the applicants are not yet guaranteed an award: At the end of August, all nominees have the opportunity to present their projects to the jury. The jury consists of the following experts: Katharina Hopp, jury president and board member SVSM; ambassador dr Eric Jakob, Head of the Directorate for Business Promotion SECO; Pascal Jenny, President of Arosa Tourism; Karin Jung, Head of Office for Economy and Labor Canton of St.Gallen; Prof. Dr. Markus Schmidiger, Head of the Real Estate Competence Center

    University of Lucerne; Sonja Wollkopf-Walt, CEO Greater Zurich Area.

    The awards will be presented on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, as part of the hybrid conference "SVSM Dialogue Economic Promotion" in the Capitol cinema in Olten. Incidentally, the location manager of the year is also honored at this event.
