    OST thinks AI ahead

    Artificial intelligence is more than just a trend at the OST. It is an integral part of teaching and research. Rector Daniel Seelhofer emphasised that the OST specifically builds bridges between scientific excellence and practical application. More than 20 OST research institutes are now working with AI, often in collaboration with companies, administrations or the healthcare sector. The topic has been part of all degree programmes since 2021.

    The importance of this focus was emphasised by Bettina Surber, member of the St. Gallen cantonal government. She praised the OST as a driving force for Eastern Switzerland and pledged the canton’s political support for the university.

    Various short presentations and films demonstrated the wide range of applications for AI at OST.

    AI helps to optimise concrete mixes with reduced cement content for specific requirements.

    Self-determined handling of data
    A digital “data account” is intended to give citizens more control over their information.

    Sport and intelligence
    Exergames train the intelligence of professional ice hockey players under physical stress.

    Healthy eating with digital support
    A smart app creates personalised meal plans – taking allergies, preferences and health goals into account.

    Agriculture with robots
    Agricultural robots carry out maintenance work such as irrigation or pest control independently.

    Care advice via chatbot
    A digital assistance system for caring relatives was developed in collaboration with the city of St.Gallen.

    Understanding children’s language
    An AI supports professionals in interpreting children’s expressions.

    Two panel discussions focussed on the social dimensions of AI. SRF presenter Florian Inhauser led the discussions. Questions about data protection, responsibility and inclusion were addressed. The discussion showed that technological development alone is not enough. Clear ethical guidelines and social dialogue are needed.

    AI as a tool, not an end in itself
    The second OST University Day made it impressively clear that artificial intelligence is already present in many areas of life – and is making real improvements possible. The decisive factor is how responsibly it is used. The OST is positioning itself as a key player in combining innovation with social benefits.

    Real Estate Meeting at the Schlierefäscht takes place on 7 September

    Real Estate Meets Limmattal is the name of the new real estate meeting at the Schlierefäscht. According to a press release, it will take place on Thursday, 7 September, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the “Event Tent – Space for More in the Heart” of the Schlierefäscht. The target group is stakeholders from the Limmattal real estate sector Zurich-Aargau, including investors and students in the field of spatial planning, the Swiss Homeowners’ Association(HEV) and politicians, the announcement says.

    According to the programme, after a welcome by the Mayor of Schlierem, Markus Bärtschiger, a lecture by political geographer Michael Hermann of the sotomo research institute in Zurich is scheduled. He will speak on the topic: A region between valley and city – the somewhat different SWOT analysis. SWOT stands for Analysis of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats and is called Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats Analysis in German. Afterwards, Dietikon’s mayor Roger Bachmann, Dieter Beeler, area manager of IG Silbern, and Dietikon’s building contractor Josef Wiederkehr will discuss development areas in Dietikon.

    In the invitation, Fabienne Hoelzel’s presentation is described as a highlight. The professor for design + urban planning at the State Academy of Fine Arts(abk) in Stuttgart will speak about “the crux of development”. Other presentations will also examine the energy transition and electromobility in the context of site development.

    The real estate meeting, which will be moderated by Mario Facchinetti of PropTechMarket, will conclude at 6.15 pm with an aperitif. Until the end of the event at 8 p.m., there will be an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas.

    The event was moderated by Monika Schärer, who confidently guided the guests through the afternoon. After a brief welcome, Arun Banovi, owner of immo!nvest/immoTable, and Christoph Lang, managing director of FRZ Flughafenregion Zürich, were briefly asked about the economic region and the connection with immo!nvest.

    In addition, Fabian Streiff from the Zurich Business Development Agency gave the first presentation and presented the region in more detail. From this it emerged that the canton of Zurich is a globally significant hub for artificial intelligence (AI). He also introduced us to the innovation hubs in the Zurich airport region, including the Digital Health Center (Bülach), The Circle (Kloten) and the Zurich Innovation Park (Dübenorf).

    As the second speaker, Hans Egloff, President of HEV Switzerland, brought us closer to the topic of digitization in the real estate industry. Using various examples, he explained the opportunities and risks of digitization. For example, the AHV number serves as a personal identifier in the electronic land register and this entails a large group of authorized users and thus a large potential for misuse.

    Before the break, Tindaro Milone, Head of Large Plants, presented the EKZ and explained what is currently happening in the energy sector. For example, the scarcity of resources, climate change, politics and customer needs. He then presented the future of energy, it is mainly about decarbonization, digitization and decentralization. Of course, sustainability is also a topic that is very topical and will continue to occupy you in the future. He completed his presentation on the subject of electricity storage.

    After the first part of the program there was a break that was used for the first talks. There were also cool drinks, refreshing fruits and delicious cakes.

    This was followed by Dadvan Yousuf, who introduced us to his platform “Dohrnii”, where everyone can easily learn about cryptocurrencies in a playful way. The presentation also included the Dohrnii Markplace, the DHN Token and the Dohrnii DAO. Finally, he made the connection and opportunities between cryptocurrencies and the real estate industry.

    Then Christoph Axmann, Chartered Surveyor MRICS at Wüest Partner, came on stage. With overviews of the population and employment development, he showed the demand in the Glattal-Furttal region. Then he showed which offer can be used to cover inquiries. Below that are investments, quantities, supply in relation to inventory and prices. Finally, he showed the development potential in the airport region.

    The last speaker was René Götz from the business development department of the city of Bülach. He introduced the business location Bülach, showed the positioning, spoke about the goals and available development areas. The key sectors of the region, the space requirements of companies and the Digital Health Center Bülach were also included in the presentation.

    The crowning glory was the exciting panel discussion with Doris Meier (Mayor of Bassersdorf), Christoph Lang (Managing Director of the FRZ Zurich Airport Region), Fabian Streiff (Local Promotion Canton of Zurich) and Heinz Eberhard (Eberhard companies).

    During the aperitif with delicious appetizers and ice cream, there was a lot of networking. The atmosphere was very good and relaxed. Especially when the draw for the competition was due. You could win a trip to the Top of Europe – Jungfrau Joch with overnight stay and dinner for 2 people. This great prize was sponsored by eSMart, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year. Monika Schärer made it exciting and presented the award to the delighted winner Markus Nussbaum.
