Expansion of the power supply in Graubünden

Graubünden-based Repower AG has announced an expansion of its distribution area. As the Poschiavo-based electricity producer, distribution system operator and energy trader announced in a press release, additional municipalities in the Misox region and the Calanca Valley will receive their electricity from Repower from 2027.

According to the expansion plans, Buseno and Cama as well as the electricity company Media Mesolcina Energia, which supplies the municipalities of Grono, Lostallo and Soazza, will be supplied by the Repower subsidiary Moesano SA based in Grono.

The reason for this is the high electricity tariffs in the Moesa. According to the press release, they are among the highest in Graubünden. The timing of the switch is linked to the energy supply contracts, which do not expire until the end of 2027. Repower plans to minimise costs in the aforementioned municipalities as early as 2026 by supporting the purchase of electricity to the tune of 5 centimes per kilowatt hour.

“As Repower produces the electricity it supplies in its own power plants, the production costs form the basis for the energy tariff,” it says. It guarantees electricity consumers a “long-term stable electricity price that is not exposed to volatile markets”.

  • Alpine solar plant planned at the Madrisa mountain railway

Alpine solar plant planned at the Madrisa mountain railway

The planned Madrisasolar alpine solar plant would be located at around 2000 metres above sea level and would cover an area of around 150,000 square metres when completed. The approximately 30,000 modules would all face south and, with a production capacity of 12 MW, would deliver an average annual output of probably over 17 GWh. This amount of electricity could supply around 3,500 households.

The yield of solar electricity, especially in the important winter months, is particularly high at this location. And the electricity is produced where it is partly needed. The consumption and production profiles of the mountain railway and Madrisasolar are an ideal match, so that the Madrisa mountain railway could be powered entirely by solar electricity. The production of locally generated, renewable energy is an important issue for Klosters-Madrisa Bergbahnen AG and Madrisasolar would be a big step towards more sustainability on the mountain. In addition, the plant would also cover local and regional needs.

Area with existing infrastructure and use
Madrisasolar would be located in an area with existing infrastructure and use. An environmental impact assessment is currently being carried out. The landowner of the site is the political municipality of Klosters; the right of use currently lies with the alpine cooperative. The owner and operator of Madrisasolar would be the Graubünden energy provider Repower AG, while Fanzun AG would be responsible for the technical project management. The participation of the municipality and the further framework conditions are currently still being examined and worked out.

The Klosters municipal council and Klosters-Madrisa Bergbahnen AG support the project. All parties involved consider the addition of production facilities for renewable energies to be imperative and judge the planned location to be possible and well compatible from an environmental, landscape and tourism point of view. In the light of the Energy City label, a corresponding production plant also fits in perfectly with the energy strategy of the municipality of Klosters. There are still a number of political and technical hurdles to overcome before the licensing procedure can be initiated. In addition to the municipal parliament and the electorate, the civic assembly is also responsible for the progress of this large-scale plant. A public information event on the project is planned for August 2023. The vote is planned for 22 October 2023.

  • Laax says yes to high-alpine solar plant at Vorab mountain station

Laax says yes to high-alpine solar plant at Vorab mountain station

The high-alpine solar plant will be built east of the glacier tongue near the Vorab mountain station. Around 20,000 modules are planned on an area of around 150,000 square metres. With a production capacity of around 7.5 MW, they will supply almost 12 GWh per year, which corresponds to the annual consumption of more than 2,200 households.

The voters of Laax approved the Vorab high-alpine solar project at the municipal assembly on 13 June. The next step is to install a test system in autumn 2023. In this way, the project team wants to ensure that the technology used can withstand the harsh conditions on the Vorab at almost 2,600 metres above sea level and that it will produce the calculated energy yield, especially in the winter months.

The Vorab solar plant is planned in an area that is already used for tourism. An environmental impact assessment is currently being carried out. The landowner of the site is the political municipality of Laax. The Graubünden energy provider Repower and the Weisse Arena Group will be the owners of the alpine solar plant, and Flims Electric is planned as the project developer.

Local solar energy for mountain railways
As the owner of the mountain railways, the Weisse Arena Group will be an important consumer of local solar energy. The Vorab solar plant brings the Weisse Arena Group one step closer to its vision of making the destination of Flims Laax Falera the first self-sufficient Alpine destination to cover 100 percent of its energy needs from climate-friendly, regional sources. In the 2022 autumn session, the federal parliament created the conditions for the rapid expansion of ground-mounted PV systems with high winter production with the “urgent federal law on the short-term provision of a secure electricity supply in winter”.
