Historic spa centres in the canton of Vaud sustainably renovated

The renovated buildings in Bière, Dommartin, Romainmôtier, Rougemont and Vufflens-le-Château date from the 17th to 19th centuries. The restoration was carried out with the utmost care in order to preserve the historical substance. At the same time, facades, roofs, windows, insulation and technical installations were modernised to increase energy efficiency without changing the original character of the buildings.

“Every restored stone, every renovated roof conveys a message to future generations, that of a canton that takes care to preserve its heritage. By modernising these five cures, we are combining heritage conservation with sustainable development,” emphasised Isabelle Moret, Head of the Cultural Heritage Department, during her visit to the site.

Strengthening the local economy through traditional crafts
The renovations were carried out in close collaboration with regional craftsmen. This not only strengthens the local economy, but also provides the canton with valuable craftsmanship expertise. The project shows that monument protection and sustainability are not opposites, but together form a forward-looking strategy for building culture.

GF tackles expansion of Klostergut Paradies

The Paradies Foundation, which belongs to GF, wants to upgrade its Klostergut Paradies estate in Schlatt. To this end, a hotel is to be built on the site of the GF conference and seminar centre and the existing restaurant is to be renovated and converted in an environmentally friendly manner, GF announced in a press release. The Schaffhausen-based industrial group is investing around CHF 10 million in the project.

The hotel will serve the company’s seminar and meeting guests. However, the planned 34 rooms will also be available to other guests, particularly at weekends and during holiday periods. The Paradies restaurant, which was previously only open in summer, will be open all year round following the renovation work. The new construction and remodelling will create around 15 new jobs in Schlatt.

In connection with the project, GF is examining the wish expressed by nature conservation and environmental organisations to renaturalise the banks of the Rhine near the restaurant and hotel together with the energy company SH Power, writes GF. The Müli stream has already been renaturalised during the preliminary work and a cold-water bay has been added.

Following the granting of the necessary building permits in recent weeks, construction work is set to begin in June. Completion is scheduled for the end of December 2025. The restaurant will remain closed during the construction work and will be replaced by a sunset bar at weekends during the summer months.

A corresponding planning application has already been submitted, the Zug-based company, which specializes in real estate investments on the Swiss and European market, informed in a press release . For the project, Artisa Group is collaborating with architect Ivano Gianola.

The large hall, in which the peace conference took place in 1925, is to be restored in a contemporary way. A new SPA and wellness center will be set up.

“The new Grand Hotel Locarno will set standards worldwide in terms of excellence, sustainability and modern service,” explains Stefano Artioli, Vice President of the Artisa Group, in the press release. “In addition, we will take responsibility for 100 employees who will work in the hotel.”

Outside, the concept envisages a redesign of the more than 4000 square meter park. Together, the hotel and park should complement the tourist offer of Ticino, according to the statement. “The holistic hotel concept fits perfectly with the OTR strategy (Mendrisiotto and Basso Ceresio, Luganese, Bellinzonese and High Ticino as well as Lake Maggiore and valleys): wellness, food and wine, events, meetings, sustainability,” says Fabio Bonetti, Director of the Tourist Organization of Lake Maggiore , cite there.
