The Schindler Group and Accor have signed a service agreement in Asia, Schindler announced in a press release. The globally active group of companies from Ebikon will supply lifts, escalators and moving walks for Accor properties in Singapore, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam to the hotel group, which is also based in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France. The agreement also includes modernisation, maintenance and service of the systems. “We see great potential in this collaboration and look forward to working closely with Schindler to fulfil the needs of our guests in our hotels,” said Sébastien Brunel, Senior Vice President Procurement, Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific at Accor, in the press release.

Schindler will tailor the lifts, escalators and moving walks destined for Accor to the specific requirements of the hotel group. The two partner companies intend to work closely together and coordinate their efforts at an early stage. “This agreement provides a solid foundation for expanding our collaboration with Accor in the region,” said Calynn Tan, Chief Executive Officer of the Jardine Schindler Group(JSG), in the press release. “JSG aims to be a trusted partner of Accor, delivering state-of-the-art transport equipment and comprehensive maintenance services.” The Hong Kong-based Jardine Schindler Group was founded in 1974 as a joint venture between Jardine Matheson in Hong Kong and Schindler in Ebikon.

Schindler receives award for MetaCore platform

Schindler MetaCore receives the Award of Excellence 2023 from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The award is presented at the conference of the same name, where Schindler presents its new reprogrammable lift system. This year, the conference will be held in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur from 16 to 21 October. Schindler is a Platinum Sponsor of this event, titled Humanizing High Density – People, Nature & the Urban Realm, which is about socially responsible densification of urban housing.

MetaCore is an innovative solution for repurposing buildings. “When it comes to environmental compatibility, rapid market entry and investment costs, the conversion of existing buildings represents the most sustainable approach to urban development of the future,” Schindler explains in a media release. Architects, project developers and building owners can use the range of services, products and easily reprogrammable lift systems offered in this platform to develop solutions that seamlessly combine living, leisure and work in a single location, according to the statement.

By eliminating the need for demolition and new construction, it can also reduce the carbon footprint. “The biggest benefit is that we are taking the most sustainable approach to change by converting existing buildings,” Florian Trösch, Head of Transit Management & Digital Solutions at Schindler, is quoted as saying.

Schindler delivers 150 lifts and escalators to Mecca

Schindler has booked a major order from Saudi Arabia, according to a media release. This will see it supply a total of 150 lifts and escalators for the Masar urban development project in Mecca. The units will be used in the latest development phase of the project. Specifically, according to Schinder, this involves a mixed-use building with hotels, restaurants and shops. The total area of the building is 1.2 million square metres.

Schindler’s lifts and escalators will be used to transport both people and goods. Among the 150 units are 44 Schindler 7000 lifts, which will be installed with Schindler’s R.I.S.E robotic installation system. This can be operated autonomously and can, for example, drill holes for anchor bolts and set them. It is now being used for the first time in Saudi Arabia.

In light of the project, Schindler is also expanding its partnership with Umm Al Qura for Development & Construction, based in Jeddah.

  • Schindler grows in the first quarter

Schindler grows in the first quarter

Schindler generated global sales totaling CHF 2.80 billion in the first quarter of 2023. This corresponds to year-on-year growth of 6.2 percent, the Lucerne-based lift manufacturer said in a statement. At 2.89 billion Swiss francs, however, incoming orders were 8.7 per cent lower than in the first quarter of 2022.

“Delays at construction sites and the uncertainty on the international capital markets are having an increasingly negative impact on the real estate sector, despite strong demand in the residential construction sector,” Silvio Napoli, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Schindler, is quoted as saying in the release. “Even in this challenging environment, Schindler achieved sales growth in all regions and product lines.”
The operating result at EBIT level increased year-on-year from CHF 211 million to CHF 282 million. Adjusted for the sale of the former factory site in Suzhou, net profit of CHF 186 million was 29.2% higher than in the same quarter of the previous year.

In the same press release, Schindler also announced a change in the Group Executive Committee. The newly appointed Chief Technology Officer Donato Carparelli will replace Karl-Heinz Bauer, who is retiring.

At the end of March, Schindler also won a lawsuit that had been ongoing for almost ten years. The background to the case is the capital increases at Hyundai Elevator, which were carried out against the wishes of shareholder Schindler. The Supreme Court of the Republic of Korea ruled in favour of Schindler in the liability suit against various members of the Board of Directors of Hyundai Elevator, according to the statement.

  • Living ecologically – also in apartment buildings

Living ecologically – also in apartment buildings

Dazzled by the sun, Bernard Illi looks out from under his flat cap over the field width in Emmen: “In 1943, the patron Alfred Friedrich Schindler initiated the Schindler-Dörfli himself.” The social housing project enabled its employees to buy their own home on extremely favorable terms. In the end there were 56 very simple single-family houses. «This place is associated with great tradition and full of history. After all, people lived here together for decades who helped the Swiss elevator company Schindler to achieve a worldwide reputation,” says Illi thoughtfully.

“We wanted to open a new chapter here and revive the innovative and sustainable spirit of yesteryear.”

The Schindler-Dörfli is gone today. It has given way to a modern settlement with 530 apartments. A project that Bernard Illi accompanied for almost 20 years. Illi has great respect for the historic residential area. As early as 1995, when he was CFO of Schindler Management, it became apparent that restructuring would no longer be worthwhile and that a new concept would have to be developed. Since then, Bernard Illi, who managed the project from the start and also after his retirement in 2009 as a delegate of the Alfred Schindler Fund, has experienced many a political tug of war: “We wanted to open a new chapter here and at the same time revive the innovative and sustainable spirit of that time to let.”

Energy contracting – a carefree package for real estate
This idea is reflected in the energy system that EKZ built in one of the superstructures for 73 condominiums. A holistic, renewable energy concept in the contracting model. This means that the general contractor GENU Partner AG completely outsources the complex issues relating to energy supply. EKZ takes on the financing, design, construction and subsequent operation of the facility – a carefree package for real estate. “Especially in economically uncertain times, when the demands seem to be increasing every day, the support of a reliable energy partner relieves the burden enormously,” explains project manager Philippe Sonderegger.

Renewable energy also in the tenancy
Because buyers and tenants in housing estates are also increasingly demanding the use of renewable energy technologies. However, the use of such energy systems is not a trivial matter, it requires a professional conception. David Bühler develops such energy concepts at EKZ: “In Emmen, they wanted a future-oriented overall concept for heating, domestic hot water, cooling, photovoltaic systems and e-mobility that is cleverly coordinated and enables simple billing.”

In order to be able to implement such a system, extensive clarifications are required. Test drilling was therefore carried out in Emmen to clarify the availability of groundwater. This is used today to heat the superstructure using heat pumps and to cool it passively in summer.

  • Schindler and ISS become partners in vertical mobility

Schindler and ISS become partners in vertical mobility

According to a press release, Schindler and the building service provider ISS , headquartered in Zurich, have signed a global framework agreement to optimize ISS’ vertical mobility solutions. The cooperation makes the Ebikon-based provider of elevators and escalators the “preferred partner for the maintenance and modernization of elevators and escalators” in ISS buildings worldwide.

In particular, Schindler’s “real-time performance and maintenance monitoring” is to be used in ISS services. ISS specializes in the design of workspaces and building management and has buildings in more than 30 countries.

According to the media release, the focus of the partnership is on “tailor-made solutions to optimize the flow of people in buildings managed by ISS worldwide and thus make the stay in these buildings more pleasant”.

The cooperation should also help to support ISS in its sustainability efforts, according to Paolo Compagna, operational manager at Schindler. The Schindler Port 4D product will be used to achieve the intended net-zero emissions. It can reduce the energy consumption of an elevator group by up to 40 percent. Further support for achieving the sustainability goals should bring “modernization and the introduction of adaptive maintenance solutions”.

Schindler optimizes transport times in buildings

Schindler has launched a new generation of building transit management called Schindler Port 4D. A smartphone app developed in-house is integrated into this latest version of its existing transit management solution.

According to a media release from the Ebikon company, Schindler Port 4D reduces the energy consumption of an elevator group by up to 40 percent. In addition, functions such as face recognition, robotics and digital entertainment can be integrated. For example, architects and planners can use hardware and software interfaces to regulate who has access to a building, when and where, or who is transported, and when digital entertainment is played.

“Buildings are built for people,” said Florian Troesch, who is responsible for transit management solutions. “With Schindler Port 4D, we are making buildings even more attractive, environmentally friendly and more easily accessible.”
