  • Cyber threats require cross-border solutions

    Cyber threats require cross-border solutions

Cyber attacks are increasing in their sophistication and reach. The latest BACS semi-annual report shows how perpetrators operate internationally and what methods they use to bypass filters and reach new victims. Over 62,000 reports of cyber incidents were received in 2024. Private individuals are particularly frequently affected, but companies are also increasingly reporting CEO fraud, phishing and fraudulent prize draws.

    New technologies, new tricks
Attackers are adapting. Instead of traditional text messages, they use RCS and iMessage to bypass security mechanisms. Deceptively genuine fake calls or the targeted flooding of email accounts with spam are now also part of the repertoire. Criminals do not shy away from misusing well-known brand names for their own purposes and spreading malware.

    Digital dependencies as a risk
Global incidents such as the faulty CrowdStrike software update, which affected over 8.5 million systems, show just how fragile the digital infrastructure is. Delays in security standards such as the CVE program also underline the risks of one-sided technological dependency.

    Swiss response Mandatory reporting
On April 1, 2025, the statutory reporting obligation for cyberattacks on critical infrastructure came into force in Switzerland. Operators in the energy, transport, administration and healthcare sectors are obliged to report serious attacks to the BACS within 24 hours. The regulation has been closely coordinated with international standards and EU directives and strengthens cross-border cooperation in the event of an emergency.

    Early warning through international networking
In order to better manage global risks, Switzerland is intensifying bilateral exchanges with partner countries and organizations. The aim is to achieve an efficient, internationally coordinated flow of information on current threat situations and robust protection for critical infrastructures, both nationally and internationally.

  • Researchers develop commercially viable salt batteries for safe energy storage

Researchers develop commercially viable salt batteries for safe energy storage

Researchers from the Dübendorf-based Materials for Energy Conversion Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology(Empa) are continuing an Innosuisse project started by Ticino-based salt battery manufacturer Horien Salt Battery Solutions. The aim of the research collaboration is to develop economically attractive and usable salt batteries, according to a press release. Salt batteries are batteries in which the electrolyte is a solid, namely a ceramic ion conductor based on sodium aluminium oxide. The cathode is based on a granulate of common salt and nickel powder. The sodium metal anode is only formed during charging. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, salt batteries are not flammable. They can therefore be used in areas where lithium-ion batteries are not permitted, such as in mining and tunnelling or on oil and gas platforms. Further advantages are their longevity and the significantly cheaper procurement of the raw materials. In contrast to the lithium-ion competition, the raw materials are cheap and available in large quantities, according to the press release.

One disadvantage of these batteries is their high operating temperature. To be ready for use, a salt battery requires a temperature of 300 degrees Celsius. The researchers are looking for options to make the applications more economical. “Depending on the application, it is more economical to keep a battery warm than to cool it,” Empa researcher Meike Heinz is quoted as saying in the press release.

Another endeavour is to operate the solid-state batteries nickel-free. The aim is to replace the cathode material nickel with other metals such as zinc. The aim is to establish salt batteries as long-term stationary storage systems thanks to their safety, long service life and the absence of critical raw materials.

  • Revolutionary building monitoring

    Revolutionary building monitoring

Monitoring the statics and stability of structures requires maximum precision. This is precisely where the innovative metamaterial from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) comes in. This metamaterial, with artificially produced structures, exhibits exceptional elongation properties that conventional materials do not offer. Developed by a research team led by Professor Martin Wegener, the material can “communicate” forces and deformations over large distances, which was previously considered unthinkable in structural monitoring.

    Overcoming local limitations
Metamaterials were previously limited to local interactions. The new material from KIT, however, enables the building blocks to interact with each other over long distances. Dr Yi Chen from KIT compares this property to “direct communication” within the material. A development that could revolutionise materials research and structural monitoring. This new type of structure opens up the possibility of monitoring buildings over a large area and reacting to structural changes at an early stage.

Unusual elongation properties for greater safety
One remarkable feature of this metamaterial is its reaction to elongation. It exhibits uneven expansion and compression in different sections. Unlike materials such as rubber, compression even occurs in some areas, which can indicate specific loads. These high sensitivity properties of the material make it ideal for engineering teams to closely monitor critical areas of a structure and react proactively to changes.

    More than construction monitoring
The high sensitivity of the metamaterial opens up new possibilities not only in the construction industry, but also in biotechnology. The ability to precisely measure forces over large areas could also be used to characterise cell forces or for biological applications. The development therefore not only advances structural monitoring, but also offers new approaches in biological research.

  • ETH Zurich presents app against document forgery

ETH Zurich presents app against document forgery

The application uses sophisticated technology to authenticate physical documents and objects. Deviations from the original are displayed on the screen in real time. The process is based on the scanning of a QR code and the subsequent analysis of the document by the app. The app compares the captured images with the original, which is stored in encrypted form on a server. It is particularly important to emphasise that the app only displays relevant deviations, without taking impairments such as coffee stains or wrinkles into account.

The Thenti app is the result of a collaboration between Martín Ochoa and David Basin, who founded the ETH spin-off Thenti. It combines digital authentication principles with the physical world, a step that was deemed necessary to do justice to the duality of digital and physical documents. The City of Zurich proved to be the ideal partner for the pilot project, as the authenticity of debt collection register extracts is of essential importance.

    Extension to three-dimensional objects
The research work on which the app is based is funded by the Werner Siemens Foundation’s Centre for Digital Trust. The experience gained from the pilot project in Zurich will contribute to the final development of the solution. Thenti’s business model, which provides for free use of the app for certain checks, but also offers a subscription model, is interesting.

A future goal of the Thenti app is to extend its capabilities to three-dimensional objects, such as luxury watches. This would take the app to a new dimension of authenticity verification and offer added value for both consumers and manufacturers. The technology promises to be able to recognise even minor, individual features of products, providing effective protection against counterfeiting.

A contribution to security and confidence building
The development and implementation of the Thenti app represents significant progress in the fight against the counterfeiting of documents and goods. For professionals and managers in the property and location promotion sector, this technology offers a new level of security and trust. By connecting the digital and physical worlds, the Thenti app makes a valuable contribution to the integrity of documents and products.

CANCOM Switzerland equips Grand Resort Bad Ragaz with new IT system

The IT services and trading company CANCOM Switzerland has installed the latest WiFi6 network infrastructure from Huawei at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. According to a press release from CANCOM, the old network of the 5-star hotel, which covers over 400,000 square metres, was replaced during ongoing operations with 80 switches, 500 access points, two physical firewalls from Palo Alto Networks and five virtual instances. In addition, two high-performance WLAN controllers and four highly functional management servers were implemented.

The introduction of WiFi6 technology enables fast Internet and smooth communication across the entire site with its various buildings. According to CANCOM, the Grand Resort can also make its guests’ stay even more pleasant, for example with checkout terminals.

The new network also reportedly gives the hotel’s IT team significantly greater flexibility and autonomy: “When guests brought their own IT equipment or needed their own separate network, it was always a major challenge,” says Reto Schwengeler, Head of Infrastructure and Security at the hotel. “With the old network environment, such adjustments involved a lot of effort and we were reliant on external support.” Now the in-house team benefits from a clearly organised iMaster management solution.

Thanks to the “excellent collaboration” with CANCOM Switzerland, the project was successfully completed within a very short time. “In the past,” says Schwengeler, “we used to receive complaints almost every week. Today I hear nothing more.”

Revolutionary investment strategy for commercial rental deposits

At a time when the focus is on adding value to capital, the new solution brings a breath of fresh air to the management of rental deposits. The innovative solution, which was developed in collaboration with leading asset managers and banks, enables companies to invest their rental deposits efficiently while providing the necessary security for landlords.

The CEO: “It’s time for capital to work for the company and not destroy value over time. With our solution, companies can quickly move from costly rental deposits to profitable investments.”

A 1999 study by the Federal Office for Housing states: “For the tenant, rent deposits are de facto a kind of “forced saving” on terms that he cannot influence. It is therefore appropriate to look for a new alternative to rent deposits”.

Traditionally, rent deposits have been seen as a cost for companies that primarily ties up liquidity. Now, companies can seamlessly transition from cost to revenue. The ability to quickly and easily convert rent deposits into secure and profitable investments dusts off the previous understanding of antiquated deposit accounts and allows them to shine in a new light. The company provides both tenants and landlords with a smart match tool.

According to a study conducted by the Federal Housing Office in 1999, rental deposits were previously regarded as an inflexible form of compulsory savings without tenants having any influence.

In order to be able to offer the best possible investment strategy for rental deposits, the company co-operates with renowned partners in the field of custodian banks and asset management.

  • Zurich cantonal parliament approves runway extension

Zurich cantonal parliament approves runway extension

Flughafen Zürich AG wants to extend Runway 28 by 400 metres to the west and Runway 32 by 280 metres to the north. With this project, the airport wants to implement the conclusions of the 2012 safety review of Zurich Airport(SÜFZ) by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation. The extension of the runways is intended to increase the stability of air traffic in all weather conditions and for all types of aircraft.

According to a press release, the Zurich Cantonal Council approved the extension on 28 August with a narrow majority of 87 to 83 votes, with two abstentions. The SVP, FDP, Mitte and EVP voted in favour of the proposal, while the other parties rejected it.

Zurich Airport is pleased with the decision, as it writes in a statement. The longer runways would increase braking distances and reduce crossing points on the ground and in the air. More stable operations would reduce the number of delays as well as those affected by aircraft noise. “There are no alternative measures in flight operations that would bring the same improvements in terms of safety and reduction of delays,” the statement says. The number of flight movements, on the other hand, would remain the same.

The Zurich Chamber of Commerce(ZHK) also welcomes the decision of the cantonal council. “Zurich Airport is of great economic importance for the greater Zurich area and for the entire country,” it writes in a statement. “To ensure Zurich’s international connectivity with the world in the long term, the airport must be able to adapt to changing circumstances.” ZHK Director Regine Sauter had already campaigned in advance for approval by the cantonal parliament. “The runway extensions bring multiple benefits: Residents benefit from more peace and quiet at night, and Zurich as a business location can count on a punctual airport and reliable connections to the world in the long term,” she is now quoted as saying in the ZHK release.

The cantonal council’s decision is subject to an optional referendum, so the electorate is likely to have the final say. Only then can the airport submit an application for planning permission to the federal government.

  • Guideline to create planning security for solar façades

Guideline to create planning security for solar façades

Swissolar wants to create planning security for photovoltaic (PV) installations on façades for planning offices and building owners. Media reports in May had created a distorted picture regarding the corresponding approval practice, writes the association of the Swiss solar energy industry in a statement. In joint discussions, Swissolar, fire protection authorities, planning offices and building owners have straightened out this picture and worked out a joint procedure, it continues.

In consultation with the Association of Cantonal Fire Insurers, Swissolar will then publish a guideline for the planning of solar installations on façades. It is intended to serve as an interim solution until a state of the art paper (STP) is available, according to the statement. Swissolar intends to develop such a STP by autumn 2024 together with experts in photovoltaics and fire protection.

“According to fire protection legislation, a verification procedure will still be necessary for the approval of PV façades,” Swissolar explains. The guideline here indicates the cases in which fire tests on the façades can be dispensed with. For the development of the final STP, fire tests are to be made in accredited laboratories abroad. “This procedure, which has been coordinated throughout Switzerland, ensures planning security for affected planners and building owners, while at the same time ensuring safety in buildings and personal protection,” writes Swissolar.

  • Listed outdoor pool, newly renovated

    Listed outdoor pool, newly renovated

In three consecutive winters, the Solothurn outdoor pool is transformed into a construction site. In the first winter, 2019/20, the sports pool at Badi Solothurn was renovated. In the second and third winter, it is the turn of the outdoor swimming pool to be built.

The two stages of renovation of the buildings were preceded by a municipal council decision, a municipal assembly decision and a referendum. In the latter case, the people approved the restructuring loan of 7.8 million francs in February 2020 with 86.7 percent yes-votes.

The renovation is intended to remedy safety deficiencies, the swimming pool is to be made more accessible, processes are to be optimized and visitor flows are to be unbundled, and there should be more showers and toilets. Overall, the outdoor pool should offer guests more comfort after the renovation. Since it is a listed building, the visible changes must be subtle.

With the start of the 2021 bathing season in mid-May, the first phase of renovation in the Solothurn outdoor pool was completed. In this first phase of renovation, underground technical work was the main task. The building structure was repaired and safety deficiencies were corrected. In addition, the northern parts of the extension from 1964, where the entrance area and cloakrooms are located, were renewed in this phase. The construction of new showers and a new cloakroom area also started, which will continue in the second stage.

The second stage of the building construction will begin this year after the end of the bathing season in September 2021. Then the southern part of the extension building with a restaurant, kiosk, cloakrooms, showers and toilets will be renewed. A new lift will enable people with walking difficulties to access the restaurant.

Some preparation and follow-up work may overlap with the end or the start of the bathing season. The outdoor swimming pool should always be possible. The renovated Solothurn outdoor pool is due to go into operation in mid-May 2022.

  • A milestone for Kapo Aarau

    A milestone for Kapo Aarau

The construction project and the cost estimate for the new police building are available. The public hearing required by law has already been carried out and the building permit has also been issued. In the 3rd quarter of 2021, the Grand Council will decide on the construction loan and its implementation. "A police building is not a building like any other functional cantonal building," says Markus Richner from the Department of Economics and Internal Affairs in the canton of Aargau. "On the one hand, there are special requirements in terms of security, on the other hand, various special uses such as a laboratory, shooting rooms or a room for close combat training – also known as a dojo – must be guaranteed." The construction project is fundamentally undisputed. But as with any other large and complex project, keeping within budget was the greatest challenge. "We assume that the Grand Council will approve the project and the loan applied for in order to create good framework conditions for the further development of the cantonal police," said Richner.

    The police building is definite.

    Additional overall renovation
After 30 years of operation in 7×24-hour mode, a complete renovation of the police command building is due. This applies in particular to the ventilation and sanitary facilities, including cables, as well as those for high and low current. In addition, structural adjustments are necessary due to changes in use. The improvements in the energetic area are also essential – especially the facade. According to Richner, the planning work was not significantly influenced by the corona pandemic: “All deadlines were met as planned. Due to the corona, many meetings did not take place on site, but rather virtually. I'm really looking forward to the moment when we can hand over the finished new building to the canton police. This is a milestone for the canton police. "
