Walensee: Steep face solar project to be cancelled

The rock face on the north side of Lake Walen will not receive a solar installation in the foreseeable future. As the project partners EKZ and SAK write in a press release, they are no longer pursuing the Felsenstrom solar project.

The electricity suppliers of the cantons of Zurich, St.Gallen and Appenzell justify their decision on the one hand with delays in the authorisation process. Adjustments to the project as a result of objections would require a new public enquiry. Secondly, the installation of free-hanging modules on the steep face would be challenging, complex and time-consuming.

The project partners therefore no longer expect to be able to complete the project by the end of 2030. However, this would be a prerequisite for it to be able to benefit from the facilitations and subsidies under the Solar Express programme.

The plant would be built at the former Schnür quarry. The solar modules with an area of 44,000 square metres should generate around 12 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, according to the public building notification from September 2024.

Alpine solar project launched over 2000 metres

Axpo, based in Baden, has commissioned STRABAG to realise an alpine solar project next to the Lai da Nalps reservoir above the village of Serdun in Graubünden. Around 1,500 solar panels and a technology centre will be installed in the NalpSolar project at over 2,000 metres above sea level, the Schlieren-based construction company announced in a press release. The first 10 per cent of the plant is due to go into operation this December.

“The construction work is technically demanding, logistically challenging and ecologically sensitive, but above all a milestone for the energy transition in Switzerland,” writes STRABAG. The individual solar tables and other components have to be transported along a narrow, single-lane mountain road. The road, which is normally closed, was built by Axpo in the 1960s as an access road for the reservoir.

As there are no storage facilities on the construction site, only the material that is immediately needed is transported. “The logistics now run like clockwork,” explains construction foreman François Borner in the press release. “Instead of being stressful, it is now easy to plan.” In the press release, STRABAG cites the uneven ground and respect for the nature conservation zones in the construction area as further challenges in the project.

Due to the altitude, NalpSolar will produce a lot of electricity, especially in the winter months, explains STRABAG. The construction company is aiming to complete the work in 2028. The electricity from NalpSolar is reserved for the SBB power grid for the next 20 years.

ewz abandons solar project above Splügen

ewz is not going ahead with its plans for a high-alpine solar plant on the Tanatzhöhi in the municipality of Rheinwald. According to a press release from the Zurich-based energy supplier, the plans had been pushed forward together with the municipal council. “Unfortunately, the key players and investors in tourism were increasingly vocal in their opposition to the Tambo-Solar project,” Philippe Heinzer, Head of ewz’s Energy division, is quoted as saying in the press release.

Municipal president Christian Simmen justifies the reservations with tourism projects to sustainably strengthen the regional economy. “A solar plant of this size is unfortunately not compatible with the planned future tourism plans.” However, Simmen leaves the door open for further cooperation with ewz. “We would welcome the opportunity to examine further solar potential in the municipality together with ewz.”

ewz wanted to build a plant with an annual production of up to 12 gigawatt hours at the Splügen-Tambo ski resort.

Voters in the Grisons municipality of Surses rejected a plant in Val Nandro in January. Ewz had planned a solar plant there with a production of 66 gigawatt hours per year.
