Parahotellerie drives overnight stays in Spiez to new record high

Tourism in Spiez reached a new record in 2025 with 198,000 overnight stays. However, according to a statement by Spiez Marketing AG (SMAG), this is solely attributable to growth in the non-hotel sector. This sector increased its overnight stays by 35 per cent to 63,000. At the same time, overnight stays in hotels fell by 2.5 per cent to 135,000.

More than half of the overnight stays were attributable to visitors from Switzerland. China followed with a share of 9 per cent, Germany with 7 per cent and the USA with 5 per cent. Visitors from Switzerland accounted for 15 per cent of the non-hotel sector, followed by China with 11 per cent, the USA with 10 per cent and Germany with 9 per cent.

The increase in overnight stays brings with it challenges. Last spring, the municipal council commissioned the local location promoter SMAG to set up a working group. Representatives from politics, the population, the hotel industry and para-hotels, as well as retailers and other tourism professionals, were tasked with identifying these challenges and finding solutions. The resulting 2026 action plan is now to be implemented.

“It is not our goal to chase overnight stay records,” said Stefan Seger, managing director of Spiez Marketing AG, in the press release. The promotion of tourism should not be at the expense of residents. “We are committed to tourism that is as sustainable as possible.”

  • Uri wants to strengthen its business location in the long term

Uri wants to strengthen its business location in the long term

The economic development strategy serves as a communication instrument vis-à-vis the economy and politics and creates transparency about the programmatic orientation of economic development. It contributes to achieving the goals according to the Economic Promotion Act – increasing economic strength and competitiveness as well as securing and maintaining jobs – and thus strengthening Uri as a business location in the long term.

The canton of Uri is positioned as a reliable and pragmatic partner with short routes. The foundations for positive employment development are being laid with the help of key projects. The main topics are knowledge-based services, alpine technology, tourism in the alpine region and around the Lake of Uri, traffic and safety technology, energy technology/cleantech as well as precision engineering and polymer technologies. In future, greater emphasis will also be placed on the opportunities for corporate functions (back office, development units) and the creative industries.

The most important projects for location development are the further development of the existing and new research and education offers in the direction of a “Campus Uri”, the support of development focal points for the provision of attractive commercial, industrial and service areas, the monitoring of the positive effects from the continuing large-scale investments in tourism, the transfer of the cantonal digitalisation strategy to the companies in Uri and the promotion of municipal lighthouse projects. The strategy will be aligned with the canton’s planned climate protection concept.

A marketing concept ensures target group-oriented communication. Important measures are the cultivation of resident companies, the visualisation of the key topics and potentials of the business location with factsheets and networking events, projects with a focus on “homesick” Uri residents, the further development of the ambassador network and the bundling of core messages about the Canton of Uri.

Broad-based process and close coordination with the government programme
The updated economic development strategy is closely coordinated with the government programme 2020 – 2024+. The update was accompanied by the consulting firm LOC AG from Zurich, which has proven national expertise in this area. Partners from business, tourism and municipalities as well as various cantonal offices were also involved in the process. Now the economic development strategy from 2016 has been updated and sharpened and adopted by the government council. The document is available on the internet at www.ur.ch/wirtschaft.

  • SVSM Dialogue Business Development

    SVSM Dialogue Business Development

For many years, the SVSM has organized the site management day every spring. On this all-day event, experts from location management, business development and the real estate industry as well as representatives from municipalities, cities and cantons met to listen to case studies, discuss industry-specific topics, exchange experiences and maintain their network. Due to the corona pandemic, the event in 2020 and 2021 could not be held. The board of the SVSM used this “compulsory break” to fundamentally rethink and redesign the event. The result is the new series of events «SVSM Dialog»: From autumn 2021, the SVSM will be organizing two half-day events every year – in autumn with a focus on business development issues, in spring on location management issues. In keeping with the spirit of the times, the events will be hybrid: interested parties can participate physically, on site, or thanks to live streaming virtually from their desks.

Practice-related presentations and exchange of experience
The first SVSM Dialog Wirtschaftsförderung will take place on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Capitol cinema in Olten. The event conveys specialist knowledge and connects location managers, business developers, real estate specialists, spatial planners and other interested parties. Three practical presentations with a focus on business development offer the participants valuable technical input for their daily work and use case studies to show possible solutions and strategies for current challenges. Stefan Büeler, Head of the Office for Economy and Public Transport of the Canton of Uri, uses current projects such as tourism development in Andermatt, the Gotthard Base Tunnel or educational and research institutes to demonstrate the approaches of Uri Economic Development. He also goes into which procedure and which organizational forms have proven themselves in practice. Samuel Zuberbühler, Head of Location Promotion City of St. Gallen, gives an insight into the marketing of the city in eastern Switzerland under the provocative title “Sankt ohne Senf” and shows how current issues – such as the revitalization of the inner city – are being addressed there. He also takes up critical points in order to enable a practical exchange of experiences. Bernard Schmid, Managing Director of Promove, provides a look at the working methods, structure and current issues of an economic development organization in French-speaking Switzerland: The Promove association aims to promote the economy in the Riviera-Lavaux region on the Swiss shores of Lake Geneva and connects authorities, Business and other important partners. An extensive aperitif at the end of the event – this part is also streamed live – offers the opportunity to maintain and expand your personal network.

With them – on site or via live streaming
The event is carried out as a hybrid event: the participants either visit the event on site at the Capitol cinema in Olten or join the event virtually – the entire event is streamed live and, thanks to a special event platform, also offers virtual participants the opportunity to Interaction. After registering online, all participants will receive a personal participation link with which they can log into the event via a browser. The event is free of charge for members of the SVSM. Non-members pay a contribution towards expenses of CHF 50. If you register for membership during or after the event, this amount will be refunded.
