    Successful design for Eichmatt residential development in Villmergen

    Spreitenbach-based fsp Architekten AG has won first place in the competition for the study contract for the MW Eichmatt Villmergen project, according to a press release. The assessment committee unanimously decided to recommend the Janus project by fsp Architekten AG and landscape architects Appert Zwahlen Partner AG in Cham ZG to the client for further development and realisation. It was the “most convincing project proposal overall”, according to the press release from fsp.

    The new Eichmatt-Villmergen residential development is located on the outskirts of the village. Adjacent to the agricultural zone, this development offers 112 modern 2.5 to 4.5-room flats in three-storey buildings. Balconies and garden seating areas are consistently south-west facing. The arrangement of the twelve buildings provides generous open spaces. The existing Eichmatt Süd development was realised to the Minergie standard.

    AEW Energie AG has announced its intention to become more efficient in the expansion of renewable thermal energy and is establishing a heating network in the Villmerger industrial area at a cost of CHF 12 million. According to a press release, the municipality granted permission for the building application submitted in April. Construction work is to start in the 4th quarter of the current year. The date for the first delivery of renewable district heating to about 550 single-family homes is set for the 2024/2025 heating period.

    David Gautschi, Head of Production at AEW, has announced that the total heat will save 710,000 cubic metres of natural gas annually, which would cause 1500 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

    According to the information, the heat network uses waste wood as fuel, wood from the region as needed according to ecological cascade use, and solar energy with the help of a photovoltaic system with a peak output of 200 kilowatts.

    The supply unit is to be built between the Bünztalstrasse in the south-west, the municipal boundary in the south-east, the railway line in the north-east and the agricultural zone in the north-west. The heating centre will be built on the Cellpack AG site on Durisolstrasse. The fuels will be supplied via Anglikerstrasse and the Cellpack AG site.

    With this project, the Aargau electricity supplier wants to make a contribution to the Energy Strategy 2050.

    The municipality of Villmergen and AEW Energie AG are examining the realization of two independent heating networks. According to a media release from the energy supplier, the municipality is planning a heating center for renewable heat in the Perimeter Dorf together with the electricity company of the city of Zurich ( ewz ). Both want to invest around 7 million Swiss francs for this. A second network is to be created with AEW as an investor in the perimeter of industry. In an initial phase, AEW is providing around CHF 10 million for this.

    The prerequisite for the implementation of this plan is the approval of the voters at the municipal assembly on November 25, 2022. The first heat delivery is planned for the 2024/2025 heating period.

    According to AEW, the added value remains in the region: the Rietenberg forest area is to supply fuel for the village, and operation is ensured by the Villmergen municipal works. This could be used to heat 340 households in a CO2-neutral manner. That corresponds to a saving of 352,000 cubic meters of natural gas or 750 tons of CO2 emissions.

    The heat from the industrial heating network would be produced largely from regionally grown wood and waste wood, as well as oil to cover peak loads. This can heat 700 households in a CO2-neutral way. This saves around 640,000 cubic meters of natural gas annually, which would cause 2,900 tons of CO2 emissions.
