  • Success for Suissetec in the EKS case

Success for Suissetec in the EKS case

For years, Suissetec has been committed to a “level playing field” between traditional consulting, planning and installation companies and energy service providers, which are increasingly active in the building technology market. In this specific case, EKS used customer data from the basic supply, i.e. from the monopoly sector, to advertise solar systems, an offer in the free market. This unlawful competitive advantage violates the Electricity Supply Act.

Following a criminal complaint filed by Suissetec in 2017, two former EKS employees were finally convicted on March 31, 2025. Comparable proceedings against Repower and Groupe e also ended in guilty verdicts.

    Consistent separation of market areas
The ruling makes it clear that the monopoly area of basic energy supply must remain strictly separated from the commercial activities of energy service providers, for example in building technology or solar installations. Companies are obliged to take organizational and technical precautions to ensure that there is no mixing.

Although only employees and not the company itself were prosecuted in this specific case, the court emphasized that companies can also be liable to prosecution if they breach their duty of care.

    Signal effect for the industry
For Suissetec, the third ruling in this case is a milestone. Director Christoph Schaer emphasizes: “The EKS case is now closed for us. At the same time, we expect this ruling to form the basis for competitive but fair competition between all market participants.”

In this way, the association not only wants to prevent abuses, but also raise awareness among energy service providers, as important members of Suissetec, of the importance of clean dividing lines. The aim is constructive cooperation in the market that enables fair competition with clear rules.

  • Competition for Zurich district prison decided

Competition for Zurich district prison decided

The plan to modernise Zurich District Prison to make it fit for purpose has reached an important milestone. A project led by RW+ Gesellschaft von Architekten mbH from Berlin won the competition to redesign the prison and thus improve the conditions of detention.

Zurich District Prison, located in District 4 and right next to the largest court in the Canton of Zurich, the District Court, is about to undergo a transformation. After comprehensive studies and the realisation that the current structures no longer met modern standards, the decision was made to build a new building.

The need for a new building became apparent when guidelines regarding cell size, lighting and the number of ancillary rooms were met. The winning project makes reference to the T-shape of the building and creates a harmonious link between the various buildings in the district complex. Particularly noteworthy is the clever unbundling of routes for inmates, staff and visitors, as well as the secure accessibility to neighbouring judicial buildings. One significant change is the reduction in cell places from 153 to a maximum of 90, which underlines the focus on resocialisation and improved prison conditions.

The selected concept is to be developed into an approvable construction project by 2026 and then submitted to the cantonal government and cantonal council for approval. If approved and in the absence of any appeals, construction work could begin in 2028.

  • Competition for construction project in Riedholz is complete

Competition for construction project in Riedholz is complete

Halter AG is developing the Attisholz site in the municipality of Riedholz. According to a press release issued by the property developer from Schlieren, the planning law basis for developing the site into a vibrant and sustainable living space over the next 25 years has been created with the land-use plan, which came into force in January 2022. A competition was organised for the warehouse building. This competition has now been concluded.

The task was to add new storeys to the existing building to create attractive condominiums. In the past, the warehouse was used to store materials for cellulose production on the Attisholz site. During the development of the site, it has been used intensively in recent years as a venue for a variety of events, the report continues.

According to the landowner Halter, five teams, known as work groups, were invited to develop a proposal for the extensions in collaboration with architectural firms. The process was overseen by an assessment panel consisting of experts in the fields of architecture and urban planning, representatives of the municipality of Riedholz and the Office for Spatial Planning of the Canton of Solothurn, as well as Halter AG.

The committee unanimously decided to recommend the design and construction of the building envelope by Blumer Lehmann Holzbau in Gossau SG, together with Stücheli Architekten in Zurich, and the supporting structure by Anliker AG in Emmenbrücke LU for further processing.

The projects for the Attisholz site can be viewed from Thursday 21 March in a public exhibition on the site in the so-called Eindampfanlage.

“Little Marcel” leads Boudry’s road maintenance department into a new era

In June last year, the canton of Neuchâtel launched an architectural competition to find innovative solutions for the urgently needed expansion and renovation of the road construction centre in Boudry. The aim of the challenging search was to create a future-proof infrastructure that fulfils the requirements of sustainability and efficiency. The “Little Marcel” project by Julien Dubois Architectes SA from La Chaux-de-Fonds won over the jury out of fourteen entries and took first place.

The winning project is characterised by its holistic approach, which focuses on both architectural quality and functional excellence. In addition to the refurbishment of the existing building, the planned extension also includes the construction of new buildings that will enable the site to be utilised to the full. The sustainable concept, which emphasises the project’s commitment to the environment through the integration of solar modules and the use of timber constructions, is particularly noteworthy.

The realisation of “Little Marcel” promises to improve work processes while at the same time enhancing the landscape and architectural quality of the site. The targeted expansion of the workshop buildings and the creation of a spacious inner courtyard will serve to optimise logistics and promote cooperation between employees.

With a planned budget of CHF 12 million for the overall competition and a further CHF 1.5 million for the relocation of service buildings, the Government Council is laying the foundations for a modern and future-orientated infrastructure. The public exhibition of the competition entries gives the public an insight into the visionary plans for the Boudry depot.

This project marks an important step in the development of road maintenance in the region and sets new standards in terms of sustainability and efficiency in road maintenance in the Canton of Bern. The further development and refinement of the winning project is eagerly awaited with a view to a future application for a building loan.

  • New training centre to be built of wood

New training centre to be built of wood

The general planner and architect team consisting of Chur-based atelier tsu GmbH and Zurich-based studiospazio/bersa inc. has won the open project competition of the Canton of Graubünden for the replacement of the Civil Defence Training Centre(ZAC) in Meiersboda on the municipal territory of Churwalden, the cantonal registry office informs in a statement. The winning project, ZicZAC, envisages a sustainable three-storey wooden building. ZicZAC was unanimously selected by the jury from a total of six proposals submitted.

“This project fulfils all the desired requirements to a very high degree and convinces with its holistic and future-oriented approach to sustainable building,” Cantonal Councillor Carmelia Maissen, jury chairwoman and head of the Cantonal Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Mobility, is quoted as saying in the statement. The jury was particularly impressed by the clear basic structure of the building, the natural building materials and simple construction principles, the low-tech building services concept and the high flexibility in the use of the premises. Already in the project tender, emphasis was placed on recyclability, optimised microclimate, solar power production and energy storage.

Once the project has been selected, the corresponding building bill is to be discussed by the Grand Council in April 2024. If approved, it will be up to the Graubünden electorate in September next year. Construction could begin in spring 2025.

  • Juch site to become a beacon of circular construction

Juch site to become a beacon of circular construction

Graber Pulver Architekten AG from Zurich has won the architectural competition of the City of Zurich for the planned new building of the recycling centre Juch-Areal of Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich(ERZ) in Zurich-Altstetten. With the new building, the Zurich Office for Structural Engineering and the ERZ want to create a pioneering project in the recycling of building components, according to a media release.

According to the statement, they want to “explore to the maximum the possibilities of reusing building components and the potential of the circular construction industry in public buildings”. For this reason, the submitted competition projects should feature as high a proportion of reused components as possible.

For example, most of the building material for the winning project came from the immediate vicinity of Zurich. Used reinforced concrete slabs are used in the operations building and the hall floor. The walls consist of wooden frame constructions insulated with old books, magazines and clothes. Discarded scaffolding will be repurposed as storage shelves. The existing hall structure is to be rebuilt only slightly adapted.

The façades will be protected from the weather by panels of recycled glass and aluminium as well as old kitchen covers, doors and table tops. The greening of the façades will provide a habitat for plants and animals and ensure local heat reduction.

By using old building components, the city of Zurich saves almost 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide compared to a conventional new building. This corresponds to a 40 per cent reduction in greenhouse gases.

Second place went to Studio Hammer from Basel. Third place went to the Zurich-based consortium Studio Burkhardt and Lucas Michael Architektur.

  • When glacier sticks carry over a ton…

When glacier sticks carry over a ton…

A box of ice cream sticks, a tube of glue and creativity and intuition: that’s all it took to take part in Switzerland’s national bridge-building competition. The interest of the vocational schools from the three language regions was correspondingly great. The 64 participating trainees in the professions of draughtsmen and draughtswomen in the fields of civil engineering, geomatics, architecture, landscape architecture or spatial planning as well as carpenters constructed their bridge models in
their free time and invested up to 100 hours in it. The competition is also increasingly popular with the FH students, who participated with eight teams and 21 participants. The bridge-building competition is organised by the VSS together with the engineering firm AJS.

The presentation of the bridge models in the congress centre in Biel showed the whole range of creativity of the students: From elegant and light to massive and heavy, inspired by classical forms or simply springing from free imagination, meticulously worked out to the last detail or rather improvised. Jean-Marc Jeanneret, President of the organising Association of Swiss Road and Transport Professionals (VSS), was also pleased with the huge
variety of the models presented. For him, this competition, which has been established in many countries for years, has another effect that should not be underestimated, especially in the digital age: “When you assemble the construction ‘by hand’, you understand it in the truest sense of the word. Weak points become more concretely apparent than with static calculations or 3D models on the computer. In this way, learners gain a lot of knowledge in a playful way, which they otherwise often have to painstakingly acquire
. That’s why this competition is also a good introduction to professional life.”

The highlight of the event was the resilience test, with which the most effective bridge was chosen. First crackling, then crashing and with much applause from the audience, the bridge models break on the test bench. The effectiveness of the bridge is rated according to the load-bearing capacity achieved in relation to its own weight. This evaluation formula rewards those who arrive at the most efficient solution with a minimum of material consumption – entirely in the spirit of a resource-efficient
    economy.

As in the previous year, the team from the ZHAW Winterthur solved this task best among the students. Their bridge carried a load of an incredible 1060 kg! The three students Pascal Lämmler, Fabio Schäfer and Naatan Lohrer not only won a cheque for 1000 Swiss francs, they also won the “maximum load” category and set a new record. A team also dominated in the apprentice category: the Wetzikon Vocational School with Valentin Voll, Pascal Roffler and Denis Bilgin won both the “most effective bridge” and the “maximum load” category (773 kg).

  • Feld school in Azmoos wins architecture prize

Feld school in Azmoos wins architecture prize

The Feld school in Azmoos has won first place in this year's Constructive Alps architecture prize, the Federal Office for Spatial Development ( ARE ) reports in a statement . It represents Switzerland in the competition organized jointly with Liechtenstein. Constructive Alps recognizes sustainable building and renovation in the Alps. With the competition, the two countries want to promote the implementation of the Alpine Convention for the sustainable development of the mountain region.

The Feld schoolhouse was built on the site of the old schoolhouse in Azmoos. It offers space for more than twice as many children as the old school building on the same built-up area. The socially and ecologically sustainable timber construction also impressed with its own photovoltaic system, among other things.

The second prize was awarded jointly to the headquarters of the heating specialist ÖkoFEN France in Saint-Baldoph and the Ghiringhelli residential development in Bellinzona. Third place went to the renovated Falkenhütte in Hinterriss in the Austrian Karwendel Mountains.

Switzerland will hold the presidency of the Alpine Convention in 2021/22. The internationally binding agreement between the eight Alpine states and the European Union has set itself the goal of developing the Alps into a model region for climate protection and adaptation to climate change. Under the aegis of Switzerland, the focus was on climate, sustainable mobility, Alpine towns, sustainable construction and modal shift.

  • University of St. Gallen, new campus by Pascal Flammer

University of St. Gallen, new campus by Pascal Flammer

The University of St. Gallen is running out of space. A second campus is therefore being built on the Platztor site at Unteren Graben in order to continue to fulfill its core tasks in teaching and research in a high-quality manner. Not only will space be created for research and teaching, but a new piece of the city will also be added. The architectural competition for the design of the new urban building block has been decided.

The new campus should one day offer enough space for the training of 3,000 students. A large auditorium with space for 400 people is planned for the two basement floors. A spacious park will be created around the building, which, like the building, will be open to the public.

59 projects were submitted to the open competition. After none of them were unreservedly convincing, the jury decided on an anonymous level of adjustment. In the end, Pascal Flammer's “House in the Park” project prevailed. Flammer's proposal envisages a building eighty meters long and forty meters wide that will stand in the middle of a public park. To do this, the building is set back from the street. The six-story building made of wood, concrete and glass appears light and transparent on the visualizations.

The public-oriented uses such as the cafeteria are oriented towards St. Gallen's beautiful old town. When developing the campus, Flammer focused on public transport. From the existing campus, you can walk above and below ground to the new building.

After construction begins in 2025, the building is expected to be operational in 2029. For the urban development of St. Gallen, the project means a big step into the future.
