Location promotion brings over 700 new jobs in the first year

The establishment of a total of 231 international companies in 2024 supported by the location promoters strengthens Switzerland as a location for innovation, according to the Conference of Cantonal Economic Directorates and Switzerland Global Enterprise, the national Swiss export and location promotion organization, in their press release. The committee particularly emphasizes that around two thirds of these companies are active in the five key technologies of healthcare, digital, automation, food and finance. They were defined by the federal government, cantons and regions in their joint strategy for the years 2024 to 2027 as particularly worthy of support.

According to the press release, this strategy has brought the promotional activities of all stakeholders even closer together. Switzerland benefits from the fact that the various competencies of the promotion partners complement and reinforce each other.

In the first year of operation, these 231 newly established companies in Switzerland created 716 new jobs. According to the information provided, they plan to create a total of 2135 jobs over the next three years.

Around half of these companies come from the USA, Germany, France and the UK. As Cantonal Councillor Walter Schönholzer, Director of Economic Affairs of the Canton of Thurgau and Co-President of the steering body for national location promotion, emphasizes, the companies located here “also contribute to cross-cantonal value creation and to strengthening the local SME landscape with their innovative know-how and broad network”.

Holcim has finalised the acquisition of Compañía Minera Luren, according to a company press release. With the Lima-based company for specialised construction solutions, the Zug-based building materials group believes it is well positioned to expand its business in Peru and accelerate growth in Latin America. The company specialises in wall systems that combine energy-efficient insulation and special mortar.

  • Shaping the innovation location of the future

Shaping the innovation location of the future

The Swiss government creates an environment that encourages innovation through targeted funding programs, tax breaks and investments in research. Initiatives such as the innovation promotion program support companies with research and development projects, while start-ups can grow through advice and financing.

Close cooperation between research and industry also plays a decisive role. Universities such as ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute work closely with companies to translate technological advances into marketable products. These synergies are a key to success.

    Corporate culture and start-up ecosystem
Switzerland fosters a creative and entrepreneurial culture where risk-taking is rewarded and failure is seen as a learning process. This mindset has led to a large number of successful start-ups. MindMaze is revolutionizing rehabilitation through neurotechnology, while Ava is shaping the medical industry with innovative fertility trackers.

Technology centers such as Technopark Zurich offer young companies ideal conditions for driving innovation. Google operates one of its largest research centers outside the USA here. Proof of the region’s attractive environment.

    Infrastructure and global networking
Switzerland is continuously investing in its infrastructure and research landscape. Modern high-tech laboratories, technology parks and specialized innovation centers enable researchers and entrepreneurs to implement new ideas quickly.

Switzerland also relies on international cooperation. Programs such as Horizon Europe and participation in the European Research Area strengthen links with international partners and ensure the transfer of knowledge. The multilingualism of the Swiss population favors global exchange.

Between climate targets and economic growth
Switzerland sees itself as a pioneer for sustainable technologies. Investments in renewable energies, the circular economy and CO² reduction should ensure an environmentally friendly economy in the long term.

    Innovation engine with warning signals
The Greater Zurich Area has established itself as Europe’s leading technology hub. According to experts, the region attracted over 1,280 companies between 2009 and 2021, which created 9,400 jobs and generated CHF 647 million in tax revenue. Balz Hösly, President of Greater Zurich Area: “We are probably the only location that keeps questioning its own most attractive framework conditions without need.”

Although Switzerland has been at the top of the Global Innovation Index for years, developments such as stricter regulations or rising corporate taxes are a risk for the location. The business-friendly framework conditions that have contributed significantly to our success must not be put at risk lightly.

    Maintaining innovative strength, but how?
Switzerland is at a crossroads. Will it remain a global innovation leader or will it jeopardize its own attractiveness through over-regulation?

With excellent educational and research institutes, an entrepreneur-friendly culture, global networking and a powerful start-up ecosystem, its successes are undisputed. However, regulatory intervention, rising costs and uncertain economic policy conditions could slow down progress.

In terms of location marketing, 2024 surpassed previous years in terms of quality, size and excellence. These are the results of GZA ‘s activities in the past year. As the location promoter explains in a press release, the GZA supported a total of 91 international companies in their expansion projects in this “year of top quality” together with the public location and economic development agencies of the joint economic area.

The GZA describes it as “particularly pleasing” that four out of five of these relocations came from the actively marketed key technologies of cleantech and artificial intelligence, the strategic focus for 2024. “In 2025, sustainability and innovation will become even more of a strategic focus for the GZA,” Managing Director Lukas Huber is quoted as saying. “Since the beginning of 2024, we have been evaluating projects not only in terms of economic aspects, but also from an ecological and social perspective.”

According to GZA, the most significant new additions include companies such as Revolut, Anthropic, OpenAI, the Robotics and AI Institute, BYD and Estun Automation. The strong international focus of these new companies confirms the attractiveness of the Zurich economic area for companies from the fintech, robotics, electromobility and artificial intelligence sectors.

The Greater Zurich Area is thus also positioning itself as a central innovation location in the future sector of the new space economy. “The location factors that make up the success of the Greater Zurich Area – from quality of life and security to tax attractiveness, entrepreneurial-minded administrations, infrastructure and talent pool – must continue to be actively cultivated,” summarises GZA Chairman of the Board of Directors Dr Balz Hösly.

Investing in depth saves costs and improves carbon footprint

Pistor’ s initial assessment of the first winter with its new geothermal storage system is positive: “It works so smoothly that we haven’t had to burn a drop of heating oil so far,” Michael Waser, Pistor’s Head of Infrastructure, is quoted as saying in a company press release.

This saves Pistor over 100,000 liters of heating oil per year at its headquarters in Rothenburg and prevents the release of 330 tons of CO2. This amount is released by more than 200 direct flights from Zurich to Tokyo, for example. Waser expects “that the underground storage facility will save us money in the medium term”.

Pistor has invested CHF 1 million in the construction work. This involved drilling 75 boreholes to a depth of 250 meters. The result is one of the largest geothermal storage facilities in Central Switzerland, according to the trading and service company for the bakery and confectionery industry as well as for restaurants and care facilities.

According to Waser, the Pistor cooperative is responding to the wishes of its customers, who are increasingly demanding supply chains that are as socially and environmentally friendly as possible: “We meet them.” The twelve electric trucks in the fleet and renovations with sustainable materials also contribute to this.

In addition, Pistor transports its more than 27,000 products by train from one distribution center to another. Thanks to this rail transport, an additional 785 tons of CO2 are saved each year.

This is produced using hydrogen instead of carbon. According to Hans Kohler AG, it has up to 92 percent lower CO2 emissions than the global industry average. The stainless steel sheets are produced by the Finnish company Outokumpu, based in Helsinki.

“The demand for environmentally friendly and socially responsible products has increased significantly in various industries in recent years,” says Marco Borter, CEO of Kohler AG, in the blog post. “The stainless steel industry is also placing an increased focus on reducing CO2 emissions throughout the entire value creation process. Photo analysis to efficiently record the condition of infrastructures

Straintest ‘s customers include the first major companies: SBB and, more recently, the Swiss Federal Armaments Office armasuisse. According to a report by startupticker.ch, they are working with the Zurich-based start-up, which was founded in August 2024, in pilot projects to explore the benefits they can derive from its technology for the simple measurement and observation of cracks in facades and infrastructure structures such as bridges.

Unlike time and energy-intensive sensor methods, Straintest only requires a photo that can also be taken with a smartphone camera. A small metal plate is attached to the left and right of the crack as a reference point. The images are uploaded to the Straintest platform. There, the software records and measures even the finest hairline cracks and automatically issues a report.

“Our solution is particularly suitable for short deployments, for example on houses next to a construction site, or for monitoring over a longer period of time when only a few data points – once a month, for example – are required,” Straintest co-founder Matteo Pariset is quoted as saying in the report. In such cases, it can be worthwhile to dispense with sensor methods that are more expensive to install and require a constant power supply and battery changes. The proptech start-up, which has so far been financed exclusively from its own funds, now wants to find suitable sales partners and then concentrate more on the further development of the product.

Pioneering work and education centre being created in Winterthur

The Green Spin project aims to change the world of work in a sustainable way. To this end, the House of the Future is being built in Winterthur with 100 per cent sustainability and 100 per cent work quality, according to the Green Spin website. The project has now found its second anchor tenant in the form of the Foundation for Speech Therapy Schools in the Canton of Zurich, Green Spin explains in a press release.

“Green Spin offers the perfect setting for innovative educational approaches,” Peter Felix from Felix Partner Architektur Design, which initiated and developed the project, is quoted as saying. “With the Stiftung Sprachheilschulen im Kanton Zürich, we have gained another tenant that ideally complements our concept of openness, networking and forward-looking development.” The foundation currently operates at four locations in Zurich, Winterthur, Fahrweid in the Limmat Valley and Stäfa.

Green Spin received its building permit last year and construction is due to start this year. The centre is expected to be ready for occupation in 2027. In addition to the foundation, the leisure sports provider Padelta has already reserved premises in Green Spin.

Green Spin is intended to offer young and established companies an ideal environment. The building is designed as a modular timber construction and will have a photovoltaic façade and wind power for its own energy supply. In addition to bright working environments, the project envisages meeting places such as a roof garden, a courtyard forest and market alleyways.

Company from Rapperswil BE wins prestigious business award

Gasser Ceramic has won this year’s Prix SVC Espace Mittelland. The family-run company based in Rapperswil in the Bernese Seeland produces tiles for roofs and façades as well as bricks and photovoltaic systems integrated into roof tiles. With around 200 employees, ten production lines and six kilns at four locations, the winning company is one of the leading Swiss companies in this sector, according to a statement from the Swiss Venture Club(SVC).

“Nobody can get past Gassers,” jury president Jürg Schwarzenbach is quoted as saying in a statement from his laudatory speech. “During the jury’s visit, we felt the enthusiasm for the products and the pride of the employees in working for this traditional company.”

Platit AG from Selzach followed in second place. The company manufactures high-tech systems for PVD coating. Its machines are used to emboss five-figure coins and gold medals and to coat the hinges and dials of luxury watches. Over 650 Platit coating systems are installed worldwide. The company also has branches in Europe, America and Asia.

Third place went to Schwob AG from Burgdorf. The long-established company develops and manufactures high-quality table and bed linen for hotels, restaurants, clinics and residences with around 240 employees in its own Jacquard weaving mill. Schwob has five of its own laundries and 30 local partner laundries for cleaning. Schwob exports to facilities around the globe. Megasol Energie from Deitingen SO, a developer of solar modules and assembly systems, and Olwo, a production, trading and service company in the timber industry from Worb BE, were honoured with a diploma.

The award ceremony took place in front of 1,300 guests in the Kursaal Bern. “The Prix SVC is far more than just an award,” said Reto Portmann, President of the SVC organising committee. “This prestigious event symbolises entrepreneurial spirit, innovative strength and the courage it takes to be successful in our dynamic and competitive world.”

Open day at timber construction company in Uetendorf

Holzbau Graber is holding an open day at its new building at Gewerbestrasse 7 in Uetendorf on Saturday, 15 March 2025, according to a press release. From 10 am to 4 pm, the public will have the opportunity to visit the new company headquarters. Visitors can find out about all facets of the timber construction company. The range of services offered by Graber Holzbau GmbH includes carpentry, roofing, solar technology and interior fittings. The company specialises in the construction of timber houses.

The owner-managed company employs 20 people. The SME intends to continue to grow at the new site and create additional jobs. According to the press release, the previous locations in Heimberg BE and Horrenbach BE had become too small for this.

The move to Uetendorf means that the work and processes are now on the same company premises. According to owner and managing director Johann Graber, the merger will enable further growth. The production hall offers sufficient space for efficient working, and travelling distances for suppliers will be shorter. Numerous organisational advances also speak in favour of a central location.

The open day will provide an opportunity for professional discussions and a cosy get-together. According to the company, a tour of the plant and a performance by musician Roberto Brigante are also planned.

    Bernapark strengthens support for SMEs

The Centre for Innovation and Digitalisation (ZID) at ZID Bernapark AG is repositioning itself. Originally founded as a catalyst for early-stage start-ups, the centre’s scope of action will in future include SMEs and start-ups at all stages, the ZID announced in a press release. “The new strategy is an important step for the ZID”, Hans-Ulrich Müller, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ZID Bernapark AG, is quoted as saying. “It creates the basis for sustainable growth and strengthens our position as an innovation hub for SMEs in Espace Mittelland.”

The ZID’s programmes are designed to offer practical solutions for current challenges in companies. In terms of content, the focus is on artificial intelligence, digital transformation and succession planning. In the first step of the transformation, the two formats KMU Update and KMU Upgrade will be introduced. KMU Update offers free networking formats such as skill share lunches and input workshops. KMU Upgrade is designed as a fee-based format for specific realisations.

At the beginning of the year, the Swiss Venture Club also relocated its office to the ZID. The ZID is thus “expanding access to one of the largest SME networks in Switzerland”, according to the press release. “We are creating a platform that not only connects SMEs and start-ups, but also provides them with concrete tools for digital transformation,” explains Martin Hofer, Interim Managing Director of the ZID. “Our programmes are designed to implement innovations in a practical and efficient manner.”

  • Schlieren North East interest group founded for site development

Schlieren North East interest group founded for site development

The interest group (IG) Schlieren Nord Ost has been founded. According to a press release from the city of Schlieren, the aim of the association is to actively help shape the development of the area. The residential, industrial, commercial and innovation area on Rüti-/Ifangstrasse in Schlieren is one of the city’s largest development sites alongside the Wagiareal and Rietpark. The new interest group intends to pool the interests of the owners and clarify the zoning plan with the city of Schlieren and the future extension of the building lease agreements with the city of Zurich in partnership at an early stage, the statement continues.

“I have maintained very good contacts with the City of Zurich for a quarter of a century, but – like many other things – these fell asleep during and after coronavirus. However, as the city of Zurich owns over 200,000 square metres of building land in the city of Schlieren, I would like to revive these contacts over the next 14 months,” Albert Schweizer, the city of Schlieren’s location promoter, is quoted as saying. The aim is to extend the building lease agreements, which run until around 2040, by 30 years in order to create planning security for future generations. There is the possibility of attracting more companies and creating new jobs.

The planned membership of the regional location promotion organisation Limmatstadt AG is intended to further expand regional networking, according to the city press release. Joint events are also planned with other sites in Schlieren and the Limmat Valley, such as Silbern, Niderfeld in Dietikon and Kreuzäcker in Spreitenbach.

According to the press release, building lease holders and property owners met on Wednesday, 5 March, at the Innovation and Young Entrepreneur Centre(IJZ) in Schlieren to found the interest group. As part of the foundation, representatives from the Canton of Zurich’s Civil Engineering Office and the energy company ewz presented plans for the cycle path and the district heating substation in the eastern part of the site.

  • Cooperation in data centre optimisation

    Cooperation in data centre optimisation

BKW and the start-up company K51 from Eschenz are working together on an innovative project for data centres. K51 places servers and data centres in locations such as greenhouses so that the waste heat from the computing power can be used for heating. “We deliver fossil-free heat free of charge and utilise computing power as an innovative fuel,” Benoît Stroelin, co-founder and CEO of K51, is quoted as saying in a press release from BKW. “Our goal is to significantly reduce energy waste in high-performance computing (HPC) and thus make a relevant contribution to decarbonisation.”

In collaboration with BKW, K51’s first regular data centre has been awarded a customised power supply contract. The operation of the facility is controlled by a daily spot price forecast from BKW Energy so that the computing services are carried out during the most favourable hours.

In addition, BKW connects the K51 data centres to the balancing energy market. In this way, the Bern-based energy supplier can switch the individual data centres on or off as required to maintain grid stability. “In terms of system control and flexibility, K51 fulfils exactly the requirements needed for such a model,” said Thomas Egli, Head of Business Enabling at BKW Energy, in the press release. “We are working closely together to realise additional potential, for example in the area of balancing energy.”

  • Successful financing round enables expansion of concrete sensor technology

Successful financing round enables expansion of concrete sensor technology

Dietikon-based DuraMon AG successfully completed a financing round totalling 1.6 million Swiss francs for the seed extension in February, according to a press release. The round was led by venture capital and private equity investor QBIT Capital in Zurich, which had already led DuraMon’s seed financing round in June 2023. Sika in Baar, a key investor since June 2023, has extended its commitment by rejoining as a strategic partner alongside Helbling Equities and others, it added. The fresh capital creates the conditions for scaling and expansion beyond the DACH region.

DuraMon is a spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich(ETH) that specialises in a new type of sensor technology that ensures long-term stable corrosion monitoring of concrete infrastructure such as bridges, tunnels, multi-storey car parks and parking garages. This enables the early detection and understanding of deterioration processes in concrete structures, according to the press release. This means that the right type of repair can be determined at the right time and in the right place in the structure, allowing building owners to optimise their maintenance strategies and reduce repair costs.

The newly secured funding will enable DuraMon to automate and optimise key internal processes, namely automated data analysis and sensor installation, according to the press release. There will also be a strong focus on customer development and expanding DuraMon’s market reach beyond the DACH region into other European countries.

  • Higher margins through optimisation in the construction supply sector

Higher margins through optimisation in the construction supply sector

According to a press release, Arbonia, the Arbon-based building supplier, increased its turnover by 10.2 per cent to 556.3 million Swiss francs in the 2024 financial year despite a difficult situation, particularly in the German market. This includes the acquisitions of Dimoldura in Spain and Rozière in France as well as the Czech company Lignis. However, excluding currency and acquisition effects, a decline of minus 5.4 per cent was recorded, the report continues. This nevertheless represents an improvement on the previous year (minus 8.2 per cent).

The decline was mainly due to a continued fall in volumes as a result of the ongoing decline in new residential construction activity combined with rising average labour costs and negative exchange rate effects.

According to the press release accompanying the annual report, construction activity in Arbonia’s largest European markets did not yet recover noticeably in 2024. Instead, the second half of the year was weaker than expected in Germany, an important market for Arbonia: declining building permits and high financing costs are cited as problems here.

EBITDA including special effects increased by 107.8 per cent to CHF 66.3 million in the financial year. This corresponds to an increase in the EBITDA margin from 6.3 to 11.9 per cent, according to the press release. This includes a profit of around 29 million Swiss francs from the sale of the Zelgstrasse site in Arbon. EBITDA excluding special effects increased by 22.1 per cent to 41.7 million Swiss francs. This corresponds to an increase in the EBITDA margin from 6.8 per cent to 7.5 per cent.
