Energy-efficient solution thanks to underground pipe laying

The new four-track hall for the maintenance of the ICE fleet in Cottbus is to be heated with district heating in future. To ensure this, BRUGG Pipes from Kleindöttingen supplied 1.3 kilometres of special district heating cable FHK pipes, according to a press release. One challenge was to lay these FHK pipes in a microtunnel without digging. A flexible steel pipe with a drill head is guided from a starting pit to a target pit. The process is supported by an environmentally friendly flushing system that removes the soil. Four FHK pipes are pulled into the steel pipe to bring district heating from the gas-fuelled block heating plants of Stadtwerke Cottbus to the factory buildings.

“We supplied a total of six pipe drums: Two drums with 260 metres of FHK district heating pipe each and four drums with 195 metres each. The larger drums were almost 4 metres tall and each weighed 14 tonnes. Two special transports were required for this enormous weight,” Martin Rigaud, CEO of BRUGG Pipes, is quoted as saying in the press release.

The new building is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2026. A district heating supply via hydrogen is planned. In addition, heat is to be obtained from the Cottbus Baltic Sea, a flooded open-cast mine, via a seawater heat pump, according to the press release.

BRUGG Pipes is part of the Brugg-based BRUGG Group AG.
