    Revolutionary sound absorbers

    Every centimeter counts in the fight against noise. Traditional sound absorbers made from bulky materials such as rock wool or melamine foam are often too thick and restrictive in terms of design. The newly developed sound absorbers made of mineral gypsum or cement foams offer a convincing alternative. They are just as effective as conventional absorbers, but around four times thinner. This opens up completely new possibilities for integration into existing and new construction projects.

    The varying pore structure of the mineral foams forces the air particles along a longer path, resulting in a high level of sound absorption despite the low thickness. This patented design makes it possible to tune the absorbers to specific frequency ranges. The foams are also fireproof, recyclable and do not release any harmful particles. Cement foams are also weatherproof, making them ideal for outdoor use.

    Practical test in Zurich
    An initial prototype of the new sound absorbers has already been tested in a courtyard entrance in Zurich. The results are very promising. The noise level was reduced by up to 4 decibels, especially when cars drove past. The 72 panels with a total thickness of around 5.5 centimetres showed reliable attenuation of low frequencies and a significant reduction in sound transmission in the area of peak absorption.

    Versatile applications
    The new sound absorbers are suitable for a wide range of applications. They can be integrated in driveways, under balconies, on facades, in stairwells or large indoor spaces such as offices, canteens or sports halls. They are particularly interesting for special applications where limited space, fire protection and design requirements have to be taken into account at the same time.

    The future of noise reduction
    The idea for these innovative sound absorbers was conceived several years ago, but the breakthrough only came with the combination of material development and acoustic modeling as part of an Innosuisse project. Production is currently still partly carried out by hand, but the material is to be further developed and produced on a larger scale with a suitable industrial partner.

    The mineral sound absorbers have the potential to revolutionize noise reduction in various environments. They offer an efficient, space-saving and design-flexible solution to the challenges of modern building acoustics.

    Government council plans infrastructure boost in Glattal

    The Glattal is one of the most dynamic development regions in the canton of Zurich, strategically located between Zurich, Winterthur and the international airport. The cantonal government is now proposing a total package totalling CHF 543 million to the cantonal council in order to strengthen the infrastructure in a targeted manner. Plans include the extension of the Glattalbahn railway to the Steinacker area, a main cycle link to Bassersdorf and flood protection measures on the Altbach.

    Mobility and environmental boost for the airport region
    The combination of railway expansion, cycling infrastructure and water protection addresses several key objectives of the cantonal development plan. The extended Glattalbahn railway will provide better connections to the industrial area of Kloten, while the main cycle link will create an environmentally friendly alternative for commuters. At the same time, the planned flood defences will protect the population and critical infrastructure such as the airport from natural hazards.

    Efficient implementation through synergies
    The close proximity of the three sub-projects requires joint planning and therefore offers ideal conditions for efficient implementation. Construction time, costs and disruption can be reduced by bundling the construction phases. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-2027 and will take around five years.

    Cost sharing by the federal government and municipalities
    Although the project volume totals CHF 543 million, the canton is only expected to contribute around CHF 290 million itself. The federal government is contributing up to 40 % to the railway and cycle path, and between 35 and 45 % to flood protection. Value-added contributions from the city of Kloten and private investors are also planned.

    Clear decision despite municipal rejection
    Although two municipal proposals for the development of the Steinacker area were rejected by the people of Kloten in 2024, the Glattalbahn itself was not part of this vote. Following a comprehensive review, the government council nevertheless considers the existing project to be the most appropriate solution, both economically and in terms of transport and spatial planning.

    The canton of Zurich looks to the north, or more precisely to Copenhagen, as a pioneering example. The Danish capital has impressively demonstrated that ambitious climate targets can be achieved without compromising on the quality of life. With an 80 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions since 2012, Copenhagen has achieved a remarkable feat. Inspired by this, the canton of Zurich is striving to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2040, or by 2050 at the latest. This target, which will be put to a vote by Zurich’s electorate on 28 September 2025, is a clear commitment to a sustainable climate policy. It is not just a question of defining a target, but of consistently driving forward the effective reduction of CO2 emissions. This is an endeavour that requires determination and innovative strength.

    Success through targeted measures
    Alongside climate protection, the canton of Zurich is investing heavily in the preservation and promotion of biodiversity. Habitats for flora and fauna are being reclaimed through ecological upgrading, renaturalisation and near-natural maintenance. Successful monitoring impressively demonstrates how quickly nature adapts and thrives. One outstanding example is the upgrading of streams as part of the “Diverse Zurich Waters” programme, which led to the rapid reintroduction of dragonflies. The adapted maintenance of embankments along cantonal roads is also having an effect. Life is pulsating there, insects and small animals are once again finding a suitable habitat. These successes prove that the commitment to biodiversity is worthwhile and that nature responds quickly with targeted measures.

    Setting the course for a sustainable future
    The canton of Zurich is setting the course for a sustainable future by revising various laws and introducing new instruments.

    Noise protection ordinance
    The consultation on the revision of the Noise Abatement Ordinance, which is due to come into force on 1 April 2026, runs until 6 October 2025. This is a direct consequence of the amendments to the Environmental Protection Act adopted in September 2024.

    CO2 Ordinance
    The Federal Council has brought the revised CO2 Ordinance into force with partial retroactive effect from 1 January 2025. It sets reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and specifies measures for adapting to climate change as well as subsidies for climate-friendly technologies.

    Combating invasive organisms
    The consultation on a revision of the Environmental Protection Act, which is intended to give the cantons more powers in the fight against invasive alien organisms, is open until 13 October 2025.

    Parking regulations
    An amendment to the Planning and Building Act from 1 August 2025 will make it possible to reduce the number of parking spaces in individual cases, provided that there is no relocation to public spaces.

    ÖKOPROFIT
    This tried-and-tested programme successfully helps companies to get started with environmental management in order to reduce costs, optimise resource efficiency and improve their environmental footprint. The canton of Zurich is endeavouring to get other cantons interested in ÖKOPROFIT.

    Listed buildings
    A bill currently undergoing consultation aims to simplify the construction and energy modernisation of listed buildings.

    Deep geological repository
    The general licence applications for the deep geological repository and the fuel element packaging facility, submitted by Nagra, are now publicly accessible after being reviewed and amended.

    Climate fund Stadtwerk Winterthur awards grants

    The Stadtwerk Winterthur climate fund is awarding 70,000 Swiss francs for environmentally friendly projects this year, according to a press release. The climate fund has been supporting climate protection, energy efficiency and CO2 reduction projects since 2007.

    Next Gas GmbH, based in Kloten, will receive a sum of 30,000 Swiss francs. It develops biogas reactors for small and medium-sized farms. This utilises the potential of liquid manure to generate decentralised heat and electricity. The funding will be channelled into a pilot project in which Next Gas’s fermentation process will be tested during ongoing operations.

    A pilot project organised by the Soily association will be supported with CHF 20,000. Here, a special compost with an ideal mixture of microorganisms is being tested on farms in the Winterthur region. A test field of 50 square metres will initially be set up for this purpose.

    SimpleTrain GmbH, based in Wallisellen, offers an online platform for international train journeys. The expanded platform will also enable bookings for routes that were previously not connected. With the support of Klimafonds Stadtwerk Winterthur, specific routes such as the one from Winterthur to Barcelona via Lyon will be offered. SimpleTrain is also receiving support totalling CHF 20,000 for the project.

    The fund is financed in part by voluntary contributions from electricity customers amounting to 2 centimes per kilowatt hour consumed. For an average household of four, this amounts to CHF 8 per month, according to the press release.

    In 2024, the cantonal vocational training fund made a total of CHF 23.1 million available. A strong signal for the importance of vocational training. Of this, 22.2 million went towards inter-company courses, qualification procedures and further training for vocational trainers. These measures relieve the burden on training companies, promote the quality of training and increase the attractiveness of the apprenticeships on offer.

    Stimuli for new paths in education
    17 innovative projects were specifically supported with CHF 0.9 million. These include the Zurich careers fair, apprenticeship competitions in the Zurich Oberland and new training company alliances in the IT and catering sectors. Social integration projects such as practical days for refugees also received support. This diversity shows that the fund not only supports tried-and-tested projects, but also actively promotes new, forward-looking formats.

    Stable fund with growing appeal
    Despite high expenditure, the Vocational Training Fund remains financially stable. At the end of 2024, it had a solid balance of CHF 15.4 million. This financial cushion ensures continuous support for vocational education and training, even in economically challenging times. In addition, the Zurich model is gaining attention beyond the canton’s borders and is increasingly regarded as best practice for other German-speaking regions of Switzerland.

    “Vocational education and training offers prospects, orientation and stability in a dynamic environment,” emphasises Ruth Köfler-Apitzsch, Head of the Office. The fund is a reliable partner for all those who are committed to strong basic education and thus to a stable foundation for the Swiss labour market.

    Zurich and Aargau plan mobile network

    The Limmat Valley is developing rapidly, not least thanks to new transport projects. In order to strategically address this dynamic, the cantons of Zurich and Aargau, together with three regional planning associations, are launching a cross-cantonal planning instrument:. The Limmattal regional overall transport concept.

    The concept follows the guiding principle “The Limmat Valley is fit for the future” and aims to create a sustainable, efficient and environmentally friendly balance between settlement and transport development. The planning horizon extends to the year 2050.

    Multimodal networking as a guideline
    The focus is on improving regional networking, promoting multimodal solutions and integrating logistics concepts. Neighbouring regions such as the Furttal or the city of Zurich are also included.

    The results of the concept will form the basis for future agglomeration programmes and will flow into concrete implementation in the municipalities and cantons from 2027/2028. Objectives, strategies and measures will be developed in several phases by the end of 2026.

    Structured process with regional participation
    The project will be managed by a steering group with representatives from the cantons and regional planning associations. Broad participation by the municipalities and public information events ensure transparency and acceptance.

    Project manager Sarah Hug (Canton of Zurich) and project manager Dominik Kramer (Canton of Aargau) are coordinating the participatory process. Public information events are planned on 5 November 2025 and 13 May 2026, among other dates.

    Mobility strategy with a signalling effect
    The rGVK Limmattal is a model project for intercantonal cooperation in one of Switzerland’s most economically significant development areas. It shows how regional and supra-regional interests can be united in a joint strategy for sustainable mobility.

    Dietikon tackles construction of the stream adventure trail in Grunschen

    The town of Dietikon is embarking on the construction of a stream adventure trail along the Reppisch watercourse in Grunschen Park. Construction work will begin on 7 July, the town council announced in a press release. The natural Kneipp facility with a maximum water depth of 20 centimetres should be completed by late summer.

    The construction costs are estimated at CHF 160,000 in the press release. Around 110,000 francs of this will be covered by the Canton of Zurich’s Office for Water, Energy and Air. The remaining 50,000 francs will be covered by the town of Dietikon.

    The stream adventure trail will have a stainless steel handrail and three entrances and exits for walking with or against the current. Rootstocks and boulders will form seating areas on the embankment. Boulders will also be placed in the water to create different currents. They can also serve as shelter for juvenile fish.

    The station square in Schlieren has been transformed into a modern meeting zone that creates space for recreation, encounters and visible mobility. In the center is a spacious square with a striking tree as a green landmark. In front of the city library, a fountain with benches invites people to linger, and new recreational areas have also been created by the SBB West underpass and in front of the restaurants.

    A central element is the clear right of way for pedestrians through the meeting zone. Sidewalks have become superfluous and the entire space belongs to public life. Almost 70 new bicycle parking spaces also encourage people to switch from bicycles to public transport.

    Green spaces for the urban climate
    An innovative approach to climate adaptation was chosen with the implementation of the sponge city principle. 1,200 m² were unsealed to allow rainwater to seep away better. Newly planted trees and around 500 m² of additional green space provide shade and evaporation for cooling, especially on hot summer days.

    The planting is not only ecologically valuable, but also aesthetically pleasing. The cityscape looks livelier and more inviting.

    Grand opening for the public
    The new meeting zone will be inaugurated with a two-day celebration on Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21, 2025. The event will kick off with an official speech by City Councillor Stefano Kunz on Friday at 5.00 pm, accompanied by the Harmonie Schlieren band. This will be followed by the street festival with culinary delights and live music, including country artist Tobey Lucas.

    It continues on Saturday from 11.00 am. Local musicians will perform on the stage at Bahnhofsplatz, including the Schlieren music school teachers’ band, Patrick Harbor, the music school choir and Valerù with their band.

    Bahnhofstrasse will be closed to traffic during the festivities. The town belongs to the people this weekend.

    According to a survey of over 400 companies in the canton of Zurich conducted by the Office of Economic Affairs, 82% rate the location positively, with 22% rating it as “very satisfied” and 60% as “fairly satisfied”. This high level of approval is primarily based on three factors: the excellent transport infrastructure, the high quality of life and the availability of well-trained specialists. Economic stability and political reliability were also cited as locational advantages.

    Infrastructure impresses
    Of the 24 location factors assessed, infrastructure (71%) and quality of life (55%) were mentioned most frequently as plus points. The labor market followed with 43%. On the other hand, 90% of companies consider the cost environment, in particular rents, wages and regulations, to be a clear disadvantage. Similarly, 64% criticize the tax environment. Zurich ranks last in Switzerland in terms of corporate tax burden.

    One in four companies planning to relocate
    A quarter of the companies surveyed have thought about moving out of the canton of Zurich in the last five years or have concrete plans to do so. The main driver is the high tax burden. According to statistics, over one percent of Zurich companies relocate to other cantons every year. This trend is in line with the assessment of many companies.

    Well positioned in European comparison
    The results are also reflected in a comparative European study by the Office of Economic Affairs. In comparison with other European economic regions, Zurich is particularly impressive due to its educational landscape, economic performance and quality of life. The study sees a need for action in areas such as labor market dynamics, innovation promotion and regulatory density.

    Location with strengths – but under pressure
    The canton of Zurich remains a leading business location with excellent infrastructure, a high quality of life and a competent labor market. At the same time, feedback from companies clearly indicates that the cost and tax environment needs to be adjusted in order to stop migration trends and ensure long-term competitiveness. For decision-makers, this means actively developing location policy before the strengths are overshadowed by structural weaknesses.

    ImmoScout24 introduces a press release on the current ImmoScout24 Purchase Index by stating that the trend towards home ownership is continuing. It is compiled monthly by the property marketplace, which belongs to SMG Swiss MarketplaceGroupAG, in collaboration with IAZI, a consultancy specialising in real estate. The current purchase index for May shows an increase in prices compared to April for both condominiums and single-family homes.

    At 0.8 per cent, prices for owner-occupied flats rose much more sharply across Switzerland than prices for single-family homes (0.3 per cent). However, the experts have identified significant differences within the individual regions. “The choice is currently particularly large in the Lake Geneva region,” Martin Waeber, Managing Director Real Estate at SMG Swiss Marketplace Group, is quoted as saying in the press release. “By contrast, supply is tightest in the greater Zurich region, one of the three most populous areas in Switzerland.”

    In the greater Zurich region, prices for single-family homes have risen particularly sharply by 3.9 per cent month-on-month. Eastern Switzerland is at the other end of the scale. Here, prices fell by 2.1 per cent compared to April. Eastern Switzerland, on the other hand, led the way with a 2.7 per cent increase in condominiums. The Mittelland brought up the rear here with a fall of 0.7 per cent.

    KONE has replaced the outdated lifts of a competitor in the Im Tiergarten neighbourhood of Zurich for 466 occupied rental flats. Within 18 months, the lift manufacturer from Brüttisellen installed a total of 46 of its MonoSpace 500DX lifts in one of Zurich’s largest residential complexes.

    According to a company statement, this model adapts flexibly and with millimetre precision to the existing shaft. The payload of most of the passenger lifts has been increased from 320 to 480 kilograms. The new cabins are also significantly larger. According to KONE, they are monitored around the clock via the company’s digital asset management system and serviced proactively. This should lead to around 30 per cent fewer breakdowns.

    The owners had decided to forego vacancy notices and to carry out further refurbishment measures while the building was occupied. According to KONE, it was able to adhere to the tight schedule thanks to a special logistics concept with overnight delivery and close coordination with the owners and residents.

    The successful complete replacement in the Im Tiergarten development is one of KONE’s largest lift modernisation projects in Europe to date. According to Christian Herbst, KONES Director of Modernisation for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, “it shows that we are well positioned to meet an increasingly important demand in the market: the efficient modernisation of even a large number of installations, in close coordination with partners and under difficult conditions such as renovating while the building is occupied”.

    Stadtwerk Winterthur closed its 2024 financial year above expectations. According to its press release, the reasons for this are the lower market prices for the procurement of gas and lower expenses for the winter reserve prescribed by the federal government. This resulted in a turnover of CHF 311 million and a profit of CHF 26 million.

    There were fewer burst pipes in the water network and the operation of the waste recycling plant was largely uninterrupted. In district heating, significantly less oil and gas had to be purchased to cover consumption peaks. In addition, the number of customers connecting to the heating networks increased. As a result of the financing of the municipal pension fund approved by the Winterthur electorate, previous provisions were released.

    With regard to the challenges in the present and future, the municipal utility cites rising costs for operating resources and external services in all business areas and the increasing shortage of qualified staff. At the same time, the increasing self-production of solar power by private individuals and companies is reportedly a challenge, as this means that they are purchasing less electricity from Stadtwerk Winterthur. In addition, the quantities purchased are more difficult to predict, as they are more dependent on the weather.

    The energy supplier will incur high costs due to the renewal of the waste incineration plant as well as the conversion and expansion projects for the wastewater treatment plant and the heating networks. This will require a large framework credit, which is expected to be voted on at the end of next year. In addition, complex preparations for the legal and financial consolidation of the heating networks are underway. Stadtwerk Winterthur is also increasingly concerned with the costs of environmental regulations and measures to increase energy efficiency.

    Negotiations are underway for the design and further development of the Winterthur terraced single-family housing estate Eigenheimquartier for 120 owner-occupiers. Urban planners OSRI from Lucerne, the Eigenheimquartier Winterthur association and the cantonal monument preservation authority are involved in the process. The results should lead to greater legal certainty and faster building permits for the historic properties, according to a press release from OSRI.

    The housing estate known as the “self-help colony” dates back to the period after the First World War. It was built as a counter-reaction to the great housing shortage and is one of the most important small housing estates in the canton of Zurich with a historically significant residential character, according to OSRI.

    The appearance is characterized by a “generally simple design language”. In order to maintain uniformity, the current negotiations are subject to a design guideline, which was drawn up on behalf of the cantonal monument preservation authority and with the participation of the landowners. This is intended to set out criteria that must apply when redesigning the existing 90 detached and 28 semi-detached houses. Specifically, the following questions will be addressed: Should the rows of houses once again have a uniform color scheme? What shape can skylights have? How much can the ridge height increase after the roof has been insulated?

    OSRI is responsible for deadlines, documentation and communication in the process. In the fall, it is planned to let the residents have their say. Their results will be presented at an information and dialog event and put up for debate.

    The growing amount of solar power in summer holds enormous potential that has so far remained untapped in the winter months. In the pilot project in Bassersdorf, surplus solar power is converted into methanol using Power-to-X and stored in the compact Hybridbox®. This innovative energy center reliably provides electricity and heat in winter, even when conventional heating systems reach their limits.

    Methanol as the key to a secure energy supply
    “Green methanol allows us to store surplus electricity locally and use it in winter with low emissions, a crucial component for a secure energy supply,” explains Boris Meier from OST. Methanol is liquid, easy to store and climate-friendly, making the Hybridbox® a flexible energy system that adapts intelligently to individual needs. Maximum efficiency is achieved by combining it with photovoltaics, battery storage and a heat pump.

    Emergency power supply and cost control
    The system is also impressive in the event of a power failure. The locally stored methanol guarantees an uninterrupted supply to the building. In addition, the high level of self-sufficiency ensures stable operating costs in the long term, a clear advantage over rising energy prices. Especially in areas without a gas or district heating connection, the system offers a real alternative to old oil or gas heating systems.

    Successful partnership for sustainable building
    The joint project shows how practical cooperation works. “The combination of energy efficiency, security of supply and CO2 reduction makes the Methanol-Hybridbox® a sustainable solution,” says Roger Balmer.

    Bringing sustainability to life
    Buildings are responsible for around a third of CO2 emissions in Switzerland. Reason enough to break new ground. The Bassersdorf project not only provides a convincing technical solution, but also makes the energy cycle tangible for visitors to the new “Sustainable Building” exhibition in the Umwelt Arena. Developers, investors and interested parties can experience how the climate-neutral living of tomorrow can be realized today. A model that can have an impact far beyond Bassersdorf.

Die Stadt Winterthur hat Anfang April 2025 die Baubewilligung erteilt. Allerdings mit strengen Auflagen, die vor allem die öffentliche Nutzung von Erd- und Dachgeschoss betreffen. Cham Swiss Properties AG, hervorgegangen aus der Fusion von Ina Invest und Cham Group, nimmt diese Auflagen ernst und will in enger Abstimmung mit den Behörden Optimierungen vornehmen.

    Formaler Rekurs als Zwischenschritt
    Obwohl es von externen Seiten keine Einsprachen gab, hat die Eigentümerin selbst einen Rekurs gegen die Baubewilligung eingelegt. Hintergrund ist die Notwendigkeit, die Detailvorgaben der Stadt zu präzisieren und in einem konstruktiven Dialog mit dem Amt für Städtebau und dem Amt für Baubewilligungen abzustimmen. CEO Thomas Aebischer erklärt: „Das ist eine Formalie. Entscheidend ist für uns der inhaltliche Austausch, damit Rocket & Tigerli der städtebaulichen Bedeutung vollauf gerecht werden.“

    Zentrale Punkte der Nachbesserung sind eine attraktive, öffentlich zugängliche Dachterrasse und publikumsorientierte Nutzungen im Erdgeschoss, wie Cafés und Gastronomieangebote am Dialogplatz. Diese Anpassungen sollen die Aufenthaltsqualität und die Einbindung in die Lokstadt fördern.Ein Ziel, das auch der Stadt Winterthur wichtig ist. Der Rekurs schafft die rechtliche Grundlage, um diese Punkte sorgfältig zu prüfen, ohne den laufenden Projektplan zu gefährden.

    The transformation of the LG site aims to create a lively, open district characterised by architectural quality and urban flair. In a study process, the team Salewski Nater Kretz, pool Architekten, Studio Vulkan Landschaftsarchitektur and mrs partner were selected as the winners, whose concept forms the basis for the neighbourhood development.

    Purchase of land by the city of Zug
    In order to influence the urban use and price development on the LG site in the long term, the city of Zug is planning to purchase a central plot of land on Theilerplatz. The cost of the plot amounts to CHF 65 million. This transaction will soon be dealt with by the Grand Municipal Council. This acquisition will enable the city of Zug to influence the design of the neighbourhood and ensure that affordable living space is created in the heart of Zug in the near future, as demanded by the people of Zug in June 2023 when they approved the 2000-apartment initiative.

    Remodelling work on the LG site
    While the long-term development plans for the upgrading of the LG site are in the political planning process, two existing buildings on the UBS Fund Management (Switzerland) AG site are currently being renovated. These are Gartenstadt 2a and the brick building at Zählerweg 3-9, both of which are adjacent to the Shedhalle with the “Freiruum”. This renovation is being carried out by property developer and total contractor Losinger Marazzi AG outside of the ordinary development plan procedure on the LGAreal and is being implemented in stages.

    Occupation by 2027
    The building at Gartenstadt 2a should be completed by mid-2026 and provide space for new commercial tenants. The 60 or so flats at Zählerweg 3-9, on the other hand, are expected to be ready for occupation in early 2027. If everything goes according to plan, the “Freiruum” will move into the ground floor of the 200-metre-long building at this time. Once the LG-Areal development plan comes into force, the Shedhalle can be renovated in a further stage in order to offer the “Freiruum” its long-term premises from 2029.
    New urban neighbourhood
    By 2032, the once “forbidden city” will become an open and mixed neighbourhood with an industrial character and urban flair. Around 1,200 flats and 2,300 jobs will one day be on offer. Theilerplatz, the heart of the new urban quarter, will be transformed into a central meeting place for neighbourhood residents and the city’s population with inviting places to spend time and green open spaces.

    The city of Zurich wants to reduce CO2 emissions to net zero by 2040. In order to achieve this goal, thermal networks and a district heating network are to be significantly expanded. According to a press release, the city council is proposing a new framework credit of CHF 2.26 billion to voters. This credit includes the funds from the credits of CHF 330 million and CHF 573 million already approved in 2021 and 2022.

    The new loaned funds are intended to take into account both the increased financial requirements for the expansion of thermal grids and their degree of greening. Currently, 70 per cent of the energy generated by existing networks is fossil-free; the target is 100 per cent.

    “We want to double the proportion of the city supplied with district heating to around 60 per cent of the residential area by 2040. This is a generational project and requires a major expansion of the infrastructure. This will require major investments,” said City Councillor Michael Baumer, Head of the Department of Industrial Operations, in the press release.

    The entire project to reorganise the city’s heating supply, including the consolidation of all thermal networks in the city, is to be carried out under the umbrella of Elektrizitätswerk der Stadt Zürich(ewz).

    A total of 37,816 companies moved within Switzerland last year, CRIF AG reported in a press release. The credit agency analysed the corresponding movements of companies within Switzerland. According to its surveys, 80.6 per cent of companies relocated within the canton. Only 7470 companies moved to another canton.

    Valais ranks first in terms of inflows from other cantons, with a net inflow of 88 companies. The canton of Valais was able to attract companies from the cantons of Vaud and Geneva in particular. The cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Fribourg also recorded high net immigration of 65 and 39 companies respectively. The canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden mainly attracted companies from St.Gallen, Zurich and Zug. Companies from the cantons of Vaud, Bern and Geneva were the main movers to Fribourg.

    At the other end of the scale are the cantons of Zurich, Vaud and Lucerne. The canton of Zurich lost a net total of 133 companies to other cantons in Switzerland. From the cantons of Vaud and Lucerne, 87 and 61 companies respectively moved to other cantons.

    The cantons of Zug, Aargau and Schwyz were the main beneficiaries of the migration from the canton of Zurich. Many companies from Vaud relocated to the cantons of Geneva, Valais and Fribourg. Companies from Lucerne mainly relocated to the cantons of Zug, Zurich and Aargau.

    The FORUM UZH is a milestone for the structural and academic development of the University of Zurich. The new building comprises a total of 37,000 m² of usable space and will not only accommodate the predicted growth in student numbers, but also set new standards in teaching, research and sustainability. The new centre will bring together the faculties of law, economics and modern philology. These will be complemented by modern libraries, sports facilities for secondary schools and the Academic Sports Association as well as publicly accessible cafeterias and commercial areas.

    Architecture and spatial concept
    The FORUM UZH consists of a terraced base for teaching and university life, a trapezoidal structure hovering above for research and a central courtyard. The structure is set back from Rämistrasse to create a spacious front zone with city balconies that blends in with the urban surroundings. The façade design with horizontal ceiling panels and vertical brise soleils gives the building a striking depth effect and allows for flexible light regulation inside.

    At the centre of the building is the eponymous Forum, a light-flooded hall that is a lounge, meeting and work space all in one. It connects all levels and can be used for university and public events for up to 2,000 people.

    Flexible learning environment and modern infrastructure
    The FORUM UZH offers a variety of innovative teaching and learning spaces. Five lecture theatres and several seminar rooms can be used flexibly and are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to enable hybrid teaching models. There will also be a spacious teaching and learning centre with over 700 student workstations. The university library will be united under one roof on the upper floors.

    Sustainability and innovative construction
    The FORUM UZH is based on a sustainable timber-concrete hybrid construction method that reduces CO² emissions while offering a high quality of stay. The intensively greened roof not only serves as a fifth façade, but also as an ecological compensation area with a habitat for flora and fauna. A photovoltaic system supplies its own electricity, while over 50 large trees on the redesigned town square have a positive impact on the microclimate.

    Thanks to the modular design, UZH saves as much CO² as would be released by the construction of 77 detached houses. The building will be certified in accordance with the SGNI Gold standard and Minergie P.

    Integration into the urban environment
    The FORUM UZH will not only be open to the university community, but also to the city’s population. The libraries, catering areas and neighbourhood shops will be open to the public and the Gloriaterrasse will be a green meeting place where people can linger. The urban design will create a direct link between the university quarter and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

    Construction schedule and next steps
    Following the completion of the preliminary project, construction work began in August 2024. Completion is scheduled for 2028 and the building will be occupied in 2029. Until then, students and researchers at the University of Zurich will be able to follow the development of this project of the century at close quarters.

According to a press release, photovoltaic systems are to be significantly expanded. In addition to systems on roofs and facades, the airport is now testing the installation of solar fences. The first system has been installed next to the airport’s heating center.

    The vertically mounted panels offer several advantages. As they can be exposed to solar radiation on both sides, the electricity yield is increased by 10 to 30 percent. This means that electricity production can be extended throughout the day. At the same time, the solar panels serve as a security fence for the airport area.

    “As a first step, we want to gather experience with the vertical solar systems and check whether this technology could be considered for other locations.     Photovoltaic systems are currently installed on twelve building roofs. Further locations are being examined in a feasibility study. Among other things, glare safety for pilots and the tower must be guaranteed. By 2040, the airport’s photovoltaic systems should produce enough electricity to supply 5,000 households.

A comprehensive study by Empa and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research has now shown for the first time in Switzerland how crucial green environments are for coping with stress in noisy cities. Physical and mental recovery processes are significantly promoted by access to green spaces, and this effect can even be measured in the long term.

    Virtual realities prove real effect
    In Empa’s Auralab, test subjects were immersed in various environments using virtual reality, from quiet urban landscapes to near-natural scenarios. After a targeted stress phase, triggered by cognitive tasks under traffic noise, a clear trend emerged. Natural soundscapes such as forests or lakes reduced physiological stress more than urban settings. Sweat production on the fingers and cortisol concentrations in saliva clearly demonstrated the effect on the body.

    Long-term study confirms sustainable recovery
    The findings from the laboratory were also confirmed in field research. A study with over 230 participants in Zurich showed that green spaces in the neighborhood reduce chronic stress levels. Hair samples showed a lower concentration of the stress hormone cortisol in people living in green and quieter environments. Even moderately greened urban spaces can therefore make a significant contribution to long-term stress management.

    Guide to healthy cities of the future
    The RESTORE project (“Restorative green spaces in noise-polluted areas”) summarizes the results of the four sub-studies and provides an important basis for policy, urban planning and health protection. In particular, the findings should influence the further development of Swiss noise legislation as well as spatial and environmental planning. At a time when three quarters of the European urban population is affected by noise pollution, the integration of green spaces opens up new perspectives for a resilient, liveable urban future.

    The new Lokstadt: urban, versatile, steeped in history

    The “Rocket” high-rise is one of the tallest timber residential buildings in planning. With Lokstadt, Implenia is developing a new, urban and diverse district with 750 apartments for around 1500 people. Lokstadt is located south-east of Winterthur railroad station. In the past, this area was home to the workshops of the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Factory (SLM) – the most important locomotive forge in Switzerland. The neighboring Sulzer factory took over SLM in the 1960s.

    Some of the locomotives produced by SLM bear the names of the various construction fields. For example, the “Tender”: condominiums were built here, which have been occupied since mid-2023, as well as commercial space. There were also 11 “townhouses” for sale: these are four- to five-storey maisonette apartments that have already been completed. In a second construction phase, six four-storey “townhouses” were built: these comprise a total of 24 apartments and have been ready for occupancy since spring 2023. The “Elefant” office building, which is located directly on Zürcherstrasse, has also been occupied since summer 2024.

    The central Dialogplatz will be framed by three buildings in future. The first is the “Krokodil” in timber construction. Here, 254 apartments have been created to meet the diverse housing needs of three cooperatives and individual homeowners. Vertical bands of windows are reminiscent of the former industrial halls and give the building a clear structure. BIGBOY” is located at the front of Dialogplatz. The 50 meter high building with 16 floors houses 125 rental apartments as well as office and commercial space between 55 and 370 square meters. The roof terrace offers a unique view over Lokstadt and the whole of Winterthur. The industrial past of the site is reflected in the brick façade. BIGBOY was ready for occupancy in summer 2023. The third building is still under development and is currently one of the tallest planned timber residential buildings: “Rocket”, developed and realized on behalf of Ina Invest, will be 100 meters high and with 33 floors will be the landmark of the new district and the Winterthur skyline. There are plans for 272 apartments. Charitable apartments are also planned in the “Tigerli” base building. A hotel is also planned. The move-in date is planned for 2028.

    Lokstadt stands for the sustainable use of resources, a carefully planned variety of uses and the innovative revitalization of listed buildings. These include the former factory buildings. Under the leadership of Implenia, these are being transformed into spaces that reflect local history and modern city life. The district is being developed step by step in accordance with the SIA Efficiency Path 2040. Despite the dense construction, emphasis is placed on sufficient open spaces and a high quality of stay. The site will be developed with an underground car park for motorized traffic across all building plots. Above ground, pedestrians and cyclists have priority thanks to a generously designed pedestrian zone.

    With Lokstadt, Winterthur connects the 19th century with the 21st century. Here, the city’s industrial history is brought together with Winterthur’s future as a residential and service city. The district is being built for people who love city life and care about sustainability.
