    Nexans Switzerland has commissioned its new solar park at the Cortaillod site five months ahead of schedule. It consists of ten individual systems, each of which was installed on a different roof. These independent units were then connected together to form a higher-level system. According to a statement from the cable manufacturer, this required adaptations to the specific architectural and structural features.

    This approach made it possible to completely avoid interfering with production activities at the site during the installation work. “The result: a 100 per cent successful commissioning, almost five months earlier than planned.”

    Since the summer of 2023, a team of Groupe E Greenwatt specialists from the Boudry NE site has installed over 4,000 solar modules, each with a capacity of 430 watts, “under demanding technical conditions”. The solar park has a total output of 1.7 megawatts. Together with a 700 kilowatt system previously installed by Groupe E, Nexans now achieves a self-consumption rate estimated at over 90 per cent.

    “This strategic partnership supports our goal of continuing to reduce our environmental footprint and develop our business sustainably, and strengthens our energy resilience,” Nexans Switzerland CEO Marco Spinelli is quoted as saying. “Even without these plants, Nexans only consumes electricity that comes 100 per cent from renewable sources, and has done so since the beginning of the year.”

    Sursee makes solar systems and green roofs standard

    In future, the roofs of new buildings or roof renovations in the municipality of Sursee are to be fitted with solar panels. For flat roofs, the aim is also to green them. This was decided by the Sursee municipal council on 14 October with the majority approval of a counter-proposal to the municipal initiative for an independent and ecological energy supply (solar initiative). The initiative committee had withdrawn the solar initiative after the city council had drafted the counter-proposal.

    The counter-proposal is in line with the new cantonal energy law, which will come into force on 1 March 2025, subject to a referendum. New buildings will then have to be equipped with 60 per cent solar panels, and 30 per cent for roof renovations. If the requirements are not met, a replacement levy of CHF 1,000 per kilowatt will be due. In deviation from cantonal law, this levy will only be possible in Sursee if the construction and operation of the solar system is economically unreasonable.

    The new cantonal energy law does not specify any requirements for the greening of roofs. However, Sursee wants to use green roofs to improve the urban climate and as a substitute habitat for plants and animals. For this reason, a combination of green roofs and solar panels is being sought as standard on flat roofs.

    The solar utilisation of façades called for in the solar initiative is not provided for in the counter-proposal. The city council feared that this would have a negative impact on the townscape. In addition, the cost-benefit ratio of façade systems is currently even worse than that of roof systems.

    Energy consumption in the canton of Zug amounts to almost 3,000 gigawatt hours per year, with buildings and mobility accounting for the largest share. The cantonal government’s new energy and climate strategy (EKS) aims to reduce energy consumption and rely more heavily on renewable energies. At the same time, the government wants to strengthen security of supply in the canton and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. With clear interim targets up to 2030, the government is concretising the path to these ambitious goals.

    Investments in solar power and energy storage

    Sika focuses innovation strategy on sustainability

    At the Capital Markets Day on October 3 in Zurich,Sika explained the company’s plans for future growth. Sustainability and the circular economy are of great importance. This was already indicated by the motto of the Capital Markets Day. It was “Unlocking growth – longevity and circular economy in construction and industry”.

    According to the globally active specialty chemicals group for construction and industry, increased requirements in terms of sustainability and the circular economy are changing the entire construction industry. “Climate change and the increasing scarcity of resources are megatrends that require sustainable, long-lasting solutions in construction,” Thomas Hasler, CEO of Sika, was quoted as saying in a press release on Capital Markets Day. Longevity brings ecological and economic benefits for both new buildings and renovation projects. “These positive aspects can be further enhanced by the use of recycled materials,” says Hasler. Sika is therefore “consistently aligning its own innovation strategy with these trends”. In addition, the Group has “a comprehensive portfolio of technologies that combine performance and sustainability”.

    Energie 360° is opening up the market for permanent CO2 removal to interested companies and private individuals. According to a press release, the Zurich-based energy supplier is now enabling them to buy certificates for negative emissions online.

    The physical removal of CO2 takes place in the pyrolysis plant of Energie 360° subsidiary Bioenergie Frauenfeld. There, CO2 is extracted from waste wood with the help of renewable energies and bound as pure carbon. This is mixed with an earth substrate, for example, and can thus be permanently removed from the atmosphere. Bioenergie Frauenfeld produces around 3500 tons of biochar per year. This corresponds to over 10,000 tons of stored CO2.

    One of the first customers for the certificates is Zürcher Kantonalbank(ZKB). “Our goal is to achieve net zero in our operations by 2030,” ZKB CEO Urs Baumann is quoted as saying in the press release. “In order to permanently remove some of our unavoidable CO2 emissions from the atmosphere, we are purchasing negative emissions certificates from Energie 360°’s Frauenfeld bioenergy plant.”

    Energie 360° also invested in two German start-ups in September in order to develop products for the Swiss market with them. Ucaneo Biotech in Berlin has developed an electrochemical process for the direct removal of CO2 from the air. Planeteers in Hamburg removes stored CO2 from seawater and can thus produce mineralized water and improve the acid-binding capacity of the sea.

    The final building permit marks the start of the implementation phase. The apartments and the associated services and commercial space will be ready for occupation in stages from 2027. In the coming years, Wankdorfcity 3 will not only contribute to the quality of life in Bern, but will also serve as an innovative example of modern urban development throughout Switzerland.

    The construction industry is one of the largest CO2 emitters in the world. However, projects such as “Beyond Zero” and the “Mining the Atmosphere” initiative could turn the tide. The aim is not only to reduce the harmful greenhouse gas, but to actively bind it in building materials. These materials, which are being tested in the new NEST unit, could revolutionise concrete and insulation materials and have the potential to make the construction industry climate-neutral or even CO2-negative.

    Technology undergoing practical testing
    Nathalie Casas from Empa explains that “negative emissions technologies” (NET) are the key to achieving climate targets: “We need to remove excess CO2 from the atmosphere in order to achieve the 1.5-degree target. NETs, which already work in the laboratory and are now being used in the construction industry, will help us achieve this.” Casas emphasises the urgency of taking action as emissions continue to rise.

    Sustainability in the construction industry
    Corinne Reimann from Implenia sees NET as a great opportunity for the construction industry: “The new materials will finally enable us to make decisive progress in the area of sustainability. The industry has enormous leverage here, but also challenges. Price and acceptance will be crucial.” Reimann emphasises that the functionality and cost-effectiveness of new materials must be ensured in order to enable their widespread use.

    The contribution of architects and planners
    Christoph Kellenberger, co-founder of OOS, sees the early involvement of architects and planners as a decisive factor: “With our knowledge, we can help develop the right building materials from the outset and integrate them into construction practice. We also need to publicise the potential of CO2-storing materials in the industry and show what effects can be achieved with them.” For Kellenberger, the key to success lies in transparent knowledge transfer and practical solutions.

    Political framework conditions and social responsibility
    In addition to technological innovation, the construction industry also requires political and economic framework conditions. According to Casas and Kellenberger, clear cost transparency is necessary in order to promote the widespread use of NET. CO2 emissions must be priced fairly and subsidies could help to offset the initial higher costs of the new materials. “The transformation will only succeed if everyone pulls together – politics, business and society,” says Casas.

    The “Beyond Zero” project shows that it is possible to turn buildings into carbon sinks. However, this requires not only technological solutions, but also the will of politics, business and society to break new ground. The construction industry has the opportunity to develop from one of the largest CO2 emitters into a pioneer of the climate transition – and the potential to do so already exists today.

    The Energiestadt association wants to support its 644 member municipalities and cities on the path to climate neutrality in future. In 30 years of commitment, much of what was initially considered progressive has become the standard, writes Energiestadt in a corresponding press release. In order to continue to act as a pacesetter, certification and support for members should be consistently focussed on the net-zero target.

    The Energiestadt label recognises cities and municipalities for their sustainable energy and climate policy. In future, the certification process will place particular emphasis on net-zero relevant strategies and measures. The press release cites the phasing out of natural gas for heating and the promotion of electromobility as examples. To receive the highest accolade of Gold City, in future it will be necessary to prove that strategies and measures are being consistently pursued and are compatible with the net-zero target. At the same time, Energiestadt wants to simplify the certification process for smaller municipalities.

    “With the new instruments, Energiestadt is strengthening its role as a leading competence centre for local energy and climate policy in Switzerland,” said Maren Kornmann, Co-Managing Director of Energiestadt, in the press release. “Energiestadt is the only organisation to offer a comprehensive package for the planning, implementation and monitoring of net-zero measures at local level.”

    Lustenberger & Dürst SA has implemented two measures for a sustainable energy supply. According to a press release, 903 solar panels with an output of over 370 kilowatts peak were put into operation on various parts of the Langrüti 4 building at the headquarters in Hünenberg. Further solar modules were installed on the roof and facades at the Langrüti 6 site, with an output of just under 187 kilowatts peak.

    The total capacity of both installations will be 557 kilowatts peak, creating the basis for “maximum energy yield” and helping to cover the company’s own electricity requirements. Lustenberger & Dürst currently generates 60 percent of its annual consumption with self-produced solar power.

    The traditional cheese manufacturer sees potential in terms of sustainability. According to CEO Simon Grander, it will be “a central key to a sustainable world”. “For this reason, we have specifically renewed our infrastructure so that we no longer need fossil fuels in our company buildings,” he is quoted as saying.

    Fashion Fish is investing in the expansion of solar energy, taking the next step towards greater sustainability. As the Schönenwerd-based outlet for designer items informs in a press release, the expansion of the photovoltaic (PV) system on the roofs of the six-storey former Bally production building includes a further 335 solar modules with an output of 140 kilowatt peak. In total, the area equipped with PV modules has increased by 664 square meters.

    According to the press release, the company has been taking steps towards more sustainable energy use for years. According to Managing Director Robert Meier, heating energy is generated via district heating. Electricity requirements have been covered by PV systems since 2020.

    The installation of the first system on the shed roofs has already achieved high peak outputs. An expansion to the east and west at the beginning of 2024 led to a balance in output throughout the day. By the end of August, energy production had amounted to more than 47 megawatt hours of electricity.

    The aim of the investment is to ensure that the majority of stores cover their energy requirements with solar power. This is also to the benefit of customers, for example through cooling ventilation in the summer months. “Thanks to the measures we have taken, we have been able to drastically reduce Fashion Fish’s CO2 emissions in recent years and offset the energy consumption of our air conditioning and ventilation systems with our own solar power,” Robert Meier is quoted as saying. The decision to expand the plant coincides with the company’s 20th anniversary year.

    The international energy company Eaton and the agrivoltaics specialist Insolight, also based in Lausanne, have agreed on a strategic collaboration to optimise the use of solar power in agriculture. According to a press release, Eaton’s experience in intelligent energy management will be combined with Insolight’s solar technologies. In particular, it will be investigated whether Insolight’s photovoltaic systems can be coupled with Eaton’s battery storage systems (BESS) and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Insolight plans to install more than 100 projects with a capacity of 300 megawatt peak by 2026. For its part, Eaton intends to support the projects with technical expertise and product training.

    Both companies will also support the farmers involved in the integration, commissioning and ongoing maintenance of new sustainable energy systems. Insolight’s agrivoltaic systems not only generate electricity that can be used on the farms, but also protect plantations against wind, hail and heavy rain.

    “This collaboration with Eaton represents an important milestone in our endeavour to bring innovative agrivoltaic solutions to the market,” said Luiggino Torrigiani, Head of Marketing and Partnerships at Insolight, in the press release. “By partnering with Insolight, we can extend our capabilities to the agrivoltaic sector, where energy efficiency can have a real impact alongside agricultural productivity,” added Anne Lillywhite, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Energy Transition, Digital and Services at Eaton.

    Holcim is making a financial contribution to the scaling and rapid market launch of Sublime Systems‘ low-CO2 cement. The investment by the Zug-based company, one of the world’s largest producers of building materials, is driving forward the construction of Sublime’s first commercial production plant. The start-up had already received 87 million dollars from the US Department of Energy in March.

    According to a statement from Holcim, the Sublime Systems team has developed a “unique technology” for the decarbonisation of cement, which covers the entire production process from the use of clean electricity to carbon-free raw materials. “We are excited about the potential of this technology and look forward to jointly bringing it to market on a large scale,” Holcim’s Head of Sustainability Nollaig Forrest is quoted as saying.

    Holcim has secured a large proportion of the Sublime Cement produced there through a binding purchase agreement. Both partners have set up their own project team to jointly develop further plants.

    “In the cement industry, size is everything,” says Leah Ellis, CEO and co-founder of Sublime Systems. “By combining Sublime’s technology with Holcim’s advanced global operations, from manufacturing and logistics to commercial distribution, together we can increase our impact.”

    The company currently operates a pilot plant with a production capacity of up to 250 tonnes per year at its headquarters in Somerville, Massachusetts, and is developing its first commercial plant with an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes, which is scheduled to open in Holyoke, also in Massachusetts, as early as 2026.

    The Opfikon-based real estate company Ina Invest, which is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange, is examining a merger with the over-the-counter real estate company Cham Group. According to a press release, the talks are still at an early stage. The merger is to take the form of a merger of equals. The boards of directors of both companies have signed a letter of intent to this effect.

    The shares of the merged company are to be or remain listed on the stock exchange in the real estate companies segment. If the negotiations lead to a positive outcome, the shareholders of both companies will be able to vote on the merger at the respective Annual General Meetings in spring 2025.

    The potential merger would create “one of Switzerland’s leading real estate companies with a high-quality and sustainable portfolio in prime locations. Ina Invest develops sustainable residential, working and living space with a focus on hybrid real estate that is flexible and profitable to use in the long term. The Cham Group is currently developing a new quarter with around 1,000 apartments and 1,000 jobs on the former factory site in the center of Cham, the Papieri site and the adjacent Pavatex site.

    Implenia, as the 40 percent owner of Ina Invest, has taken note of the examination of a possible merger. In its own press release, the real estate and construction services company expressly welcomes the possible merger.

Other practice partners are the organisations myclimate, umverkehR and Fussverkehr Schweiz. Prototypes of the VR tool could be tried out on 20 September at Zurich Park(ing) Day. The project, which will run until next year, is funded by the digitalisation initiative. Its aim is to strengthen cooperation between Zurich’s universities on the topic of digitalisation.

    Building Director Martin Neukom, Education Director Silvia Steiner and ZHAW Rector Jean-Marc Piveteau gave the go-ahead for the construction work to expand and modernise the School of Engineering at the ZHAW on 13 September. The ZHAW is one of the leading universities in Switzerland with over 14,000 students, according to a press release. However, some of the existing buildings on the site of the former technical centre in Winterthur no longer meet today’s requirements. In addition, the number of students continues to grow. Campus T will therefore be modernised and expanded in several stages over the next few years.

    In the first construction phase, two new five-storey laboratory buildings will be built behind the historic technical centre. They will provide urgently needed space for teaching, research and development. Various test rooms as well as a publicly accessible canteen and cafeteria will be created there. The new buildings will be connected to the district heating network of the city of Winterthur and equipped with photovoltaic systems.

    As part of the first construction phase, the Eulach will also be ecologically upgraded with a public, near-natural park and flood protection will be expanded, according to the press release. Two new bridges will connect the old town and Campus T with the Büelrain cantonal school and the surrounding residential neighbourhood.

    Granges-Paccot-based energy supplier Groupe E and KAAB have signed an energy contract for the La Maillarde neighbourhood in Romont. According to a press release, the 40-year contract covers the supply and utilisation of internal waste heat, the provision of a microgrid infrastructure and the installation of solar modules. Groupe E will supply energy to the site on behalf of KAAB, which will ensure the operation, maintenance and financing of the systems.

    Heat is supplied via the district heating network of the municipality of Romont. The network managed by Groupe E is mainly fuelled by wood chips from local forestry and waste heat from the roasting systems at the Nespresso plant. A gas-fuelled auxiliary heating system is provided for long periods of cold weather.

    The electrical system is controlled by the neighbourhood’s own microgrid. This is fed by a photovoltaic system with an output of one megawatt. It generates around one gigawatt hour of electricity per year.

    The La Maillarde neighbourhood, which is owned by KAAB, was used by the multinational company Tetra Pak until 2016. From 2025, watch manufacturer Rolex will set up shop there, creating around 250 new jobs in the region. The final La Maillarde project envisages an area of 40,000 square metres. Currently, 19,000 square metres are in use.

    FlexBase intends to realise its new technology centre in line with the plans already presented. According to a press release, the technology company has secured the ERNE Group, also based in Laufenburg, as general contractor. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025. An updated planning application has been submitted to the relevant authorities.

    The technology centre is to be built on the former Swissgrid site. The centrepiece will be a new building opposite the existing building. In addition to many research facilities, a data centre with capacities for the use of artificial intelligence is to be built there. FlexBase also plans to build a 20,000 square metre battery storage facility with a capacity of more than 500 megawatts on the site. According to the press release, the non-flammable and non-explosive storage facility is the “world’s largest and most modern battery storage facility of its kind”. The construction of the new technology centre will create several hundred jobs for skilled workers and apprenticeships.

    According to the press release, Marcel Aumer, CEO of the FlexBase Group, does not anticipate a delay in construction despite the relaunch of the project. He justifies this view with the close collaboration with ERNE: “In this project, I have not only experienced ERNE’s expertise right from the start, but also the full attention of the top management.” The CEO of ERNE, Giuseppe Santagada, is also optimistic: “My personal commitment goes far beyond the realisation of this project; it also includes the promotion of new technological skills and increasing the attractiveness of Laufenburg as a location for the vision of a prosperous region”.

    “This year, Boum has ensured blooming balconies and terraces for over 1000 customers,” says Boum in a post on LinkedIn. The company, which was founded in 2021 as a spin-off from the University of Bern, has developed an intelligent system consisting of a solar panel, water tank, sensors and an app that autonomously maintains green balconies and terraces. Due to the positive feedback on its product, Boum has decided to “further develop the system for indoor use”, according to the article.

    After more than a year of development, Boum has now launched the plant care system for greening living rooms and offices. The substrate for the plants was adapted to provide the optimum soil moisture for indoor plants. The accuracy of the water supply has been improved with an additional safety valve. The tank and pots are connected “simply and inconspicuously” using additional tubing and discreet cable ducts.

    The app can detect whether the system is outdoors or indoors and provide appropriate care instructions. It also lets you know when the water tank needs to be refilled. “As of today, Boum is the smart plant care system for indoors and outdoors,” writes Boum on LinkedIn. “Everywhere where people want their lives to flourish.” According to company founder Matthias Erb, the intelligent plant care system is “a world first that makes greening indoor spaces simple and elegant from today”.

    According to a press release, the Stadtwerk Winterthur climate fund has awarded a total of CHF 55,000 in funding to two companies. This fund has been supporting regional and local projects for CO2 reduction, energy efficiency and renewable energies in line with the city of Winterthur’s energy and climate policy since 2007.

    Roto Re-Use from Winterthur will receive CHF 35,000. The company, which is currently being founded, sees itself as a Swiss-wide centre of excellence for a circular construction industry. It develops workshops that show how the circular economy can be implemented in the construction industry. Specialists learn directly on the construction site how components can be dismantled and reused and how reuse must be planned.

    According to the Climate Fund, the construction industry in particular has great potential for CO2 savings, citing the Environment Switzerland 2022 report, according to which construction is responsible for more than 80 per cent of waste. In addition, building materials are responsible for around 10 per cent of Swiss greenhouse gas emissions.

    GVZ is testing the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a fuel for fire engines in a pilot project. “From today, Schutz & Rettung Zürich, the Kloten and Wallisellen fire brigades, the Männedorf-Uetikon fire brigade and the St.Gallen professional fire brigade will be refuelling some of their vehicles with HVO,” GVZ announced in a press release. The five fire brigades are particularly suitable for participating in the project as they have their own refuelling facilities.

    “We would like to thank the five fire services for their participation in this promising project and look forward to the initial results,” said Renato Mathys, Head of Fire Services at GVZ, in the press release. “Our aim is to make a contribution to improving the environmental footprint of fire engines.” GVZ has procured a total of 28,000 litres of HVO for the pilot project. It is also paying the difference between the price of the fossil-free fuel and the current price of diesel.

    According to the press release, hydrogenated vegetable oil has a significantly better carbon footprint than diesel and also scores highly in terms of energy density and storage stability. As the biofuel is produced from used cooking oils and fats, its production is not at the expense of food production. The GVZ cites its uncomplicated use as a further advantage: “Diesel engines do not have to be expensively converted, but can be operated and maintained according to the same plan as when running on diesel fuel.”

    HSLU researchers have explored the potential for greenery and solar panels on building façades in the GreenPV project. “While the benefits of PV systems and greenery are already being increasingly utilised on roofs, they have largely not been used on façades to date,” HSLU researcher Silvia Domingo is quoted as saying in a press release issued by the university about the project. However, they could contribute to closing the gap in winter electricity, among other things. This is because “the energy yield of a PV system is higher on a south-facing façade in the winter months than on a roof due to the low angle of inclination of the sun caused by the season”, explains Domingo.

    In addition to their cooling effect, green façades also contribute to biodiversity and the reduction of sound propagation. Air quality is also improved through the binding of pollutants and the production of oxygen. According to the HSLU researchers, greenery and photovoltaics (PV) can be combined well on façades. “PV comes into its own where a high level of energy generation is possible, i.e. on an unshaded façade on the upper floors,” says Domingo. Greenery, on the other hand, should be installed on the lower storeys and in inner courtyards.

    The authors have identified financing and a lack of guidelines and experience as obstacles for building owners. The appearance of a façade completely clad in black solar panels is also not to everyone’s taste. For this reason, the HSLU has already tested alternative colours and textures in another project.

    Zug Estates Holding AG placed its third green bond on August 26 with payment on September 30, the real estate company specializing in the development, marketing and operation of properties in the Zug region announced in a press release. The bond, which is aimed at institutional investors, has a volume of 100 million Swiss francs, a term of seven years and an interest rate of 1.65 percent.

    Zug Estates had already issued its first green bond in 2019. In 2022, the real estate company then switched its bond portfolio entirely to green bonds. Green buildings currently account for around 95% of Zug Estates’ total portfolio. Properties are classified as green buildings if they have less than 1 kilogram of greenhouse gas emissions per square meter of energy reference area.

    In future, Zug Estates wants to be able to offer other types of green financial instruments in addition to green bonds. To this end, the real estate company has expanded its green bond framework to include a green finance framework. As part of the expansion, Zug Estates has obtained a second opinion from International Shareholder Services (ISS) Corporate Solutions. The agency, which specializes in ESG research and ratings, awarded the real estate company a C rating and thus prime status on August 23.

    As part of the GreenPV project, a research team from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts has developed innovative solutions for the design of building façades. The aim was to explore the potential of photovoltaic systems (PV) and greenery in order to meet the increasing challenges posed by global warming. A brochure specially developed for planners and building owners summarises the findings and recommendations of the project.

    The importance of this research becomes clear when you look at the forecasts of the National Centre for Climate Services: The average annual temperature in Switzerland could rise by up to 5.4 degrees by the end of the 21st century. This will not only significantly increase energy requirements, particularly for cooling, but will also affect comfort levels in buildings. Photovoltaic systems can supply energy precisely when it is needed most, namely when the sun is shining intensely. At the same time, green façades offer a sensible alternative in urban areas where new green spaces are scarce.

    Façades as untapped potential
    “While the benefits of PV systems and greenery are already increasingly being used on roofs, façades have so far remained largely unused,” explains Dr Silvia Domingo, researcher at HSLU. Yet façades offer an excellent opportunity for energy generation and greening without taking up additional space. PV systems on south-facing façades are particularly efficient in the cold season, as they can make optimum use of the low angle of inclination of the sun.

    However, the study also shows that there are obstacles that stand in the way of a wider application of these technologies. These include financial challenges, a lack of guidelines and concerns about fire safety. These factors often cause uncertainty among building owners. To counteract this, the research team has produced a brochure with practical recommendations for the use of PV systems and greenery on façades.

    Visual aspects and functional synergies
    Another obstacle identified by Dr Domingo is the aesthetic perception of solar panels on building façades. Black solar panels often do not meet the visual expectations of building owners. However, research shows that solar panels in different colours and textures could also be available in the future without any significant loss of efficiency.

    In addition to PV systems, green façades offer numerous advantages that go far beyond the cooling effect. They contribute to biodiversity, improve air quality, reduce sound propagation and promote rainwater retention. These benefits are particularly important in densely built-up urban areas, where they can significantly improve the quality of life.

    The combination of greenery and PV systems
    The HSLU study shows that greenery and PV systems on façades can often be combined well in order to utilise synergies. While PV systems on unshaded, higher façade areas ensure maximum energy generation, green areas near the ground have a cooling and noise-absorbing effect. This combination contributes to a more pleasant neighbourhood climate and climate-friendly electricity production.

    Completion of the GreenPV project
    The GreenPV project, which started in December 2021 and ran until mid-2024, was funded by a broad network of supporters, including the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) and various foundations. The project team, led by Gianrico Settembrini, gained valuable insights, which are recorded in a brochure and are now available to planners, building owners and interested parties.

    With the results of the GreenPV project, the HSLU is making an important contribution to sustainable development in the construction industry and demonstrating how greenery and solar panels on façades can be combined to effectively meet the challenges of climate change.
